PAVER BLOCK INSTALLATION

1. Purpose
To outline the method for installing 50 mm thick paver blocks capable of supporting
loads up to 30 metric tons, ensuring structural integrity, durability, and proper surface
finish.

2. Scope
Applicable for all areas within the project where 50 mm paver blocks are to be laid over a
prepared sub-base/Base to support loads up to 30 MT, including access roads, driveways,
and parking areas.

3. Responsibilities
 Project Engineer: Overall quality and progress monitoring.
 Site Supervisor/Foreman: Execution of paver installation.
 Safety Officer: Enforce health and safety protocols.
 Surveyor: Leveling and alignment.

4. Materials
 Paver Blocks: 50 mm thick, high-compression strength (≥ 35 MPa).
 Bedding Sand: Washed, well-graded coarse sand.
 Base Course: Crushed aggregate/Granular Material/PCC.
 Jointing Sand: Fine dry sand for joint filling.

5. Equipment
 Vibratory plate compactor with rubber mat
 Leveling tools (screed board, spirit level, straightedge)
 Water hose or tanker (for dust suppression and compaction)
 Cutter machine for edge trimming
 Line string and measuring tape

6. Procedure
6.1. Subgrade Preparation
 Clear the area of topsoil, debris, or organic matter.
 Excavate to required depth considering paver + sand + sub-base thickness.
 Ensure subgrade is well compacted (95% Modified Proctor Density minimum).

6.2. Sub-Base and Base Construction
 Sub-base layer (Granular Material): Spread and compact in 2 layers, each 100–
150 mm thick. Total thickness: 200–300 mm (depending on soil condition and load
requirement).
 Ensure proper grading and slope (typically 1:40 for surface drainage).
 Conduct field density tests (FDT) to ensure compaction.
 PCC Base (If Mentioned in the BOQ/Drawing) – M-10 Grade of concrete shall
be placed of the Sub-Base layer with 50 mm of thickness.
6.3. Bedding Layer
 Lay 30 mm thick layer of coarse bedding sand over the base.
 Screed and level using a screed board to uniform thickness.
 Do not compact sand bedding before placing pavers.
6.4. Laying of Paver Blocks
 Start from one end (preferably a straight edge or corner).
 Place pavers hand-tight in the desired pattern .
 Maintain consistent joint gaps (2–4 mm).
 Use line strings to maintain alignment.
6.5. Edge Restraints
 Install concrete kerbs or edge blocks using PCC (1:3:6).
 Edge restraint must be placed before compaction to hold pavers in place.
6.6. Cutting and Trimming
 Use mechanical block cutter or masonry saw for edge pavers.
 Ensure no gaps are larger than allowed at boundaries.
6.7. Compaction of Pavers
 After laying, compact pavers using vibratory plate compactor fitted with rubber
mat.
 Perform minimum two passes in perpendicular directions.
 Check for level differences and replace any loose or sunken pavers.
6.8. Joint Filling
 Sweep dry fine sand into joints until fully filled.
 Compact again to settle joint sand.
 Repeat until all joints are tightly filled.

7. Quality Control
 Check level, alignment, and slope during and after laying.
 Ensure proper interlock and tight joints.

8. Health & Safety

 Use PPE: gloves, goggles, safety boots, ear protection (when cutting).
 Ensure proper signage around the working area.
 Use caution during compaction and cutting operations.

9. Environmental Considerations
 Reuse cut paver waste wherever possible.
 Control dust using water spray.
 Avoid excessive noise during restricted hours.

10. Reference Standards

 IS 15658: Precast Concrete Blocks for Pavement
