REPORT FOR PILE INTEGRITY TESTING Rev. No R0
6. TEST PROCEDURE
Integrity test will be performed using the most advanced state of art data collection system
available to estimate pile integrity by surface impact method. The PIT collector allows for
detection of wave reflections.
A light impact is administered to the pile's surface, generally using a special hand-held
hammer, and as a result an acoustic wave from the impact propagates down through the pile.
Variations in the shape and material quality of the pile produce reflections of the wave, which
are observed as they return to the surface.
The surface vibrations are measured by means of an accelerometer attached to the top of the
pile. The reflectogram is generated in the pile integrity tester for every blow of the hammer
recorded at the accelerometer. Although the acceleration curve could be interpreted directly,
integration to velocity generally enhances the record by bringing out details otherwise
overlooked.
7. TEST ARRANGEMENTS
The pile head with sound concrete shall be available for testing. For this pile head should be
chipped off up to cut off level or up to the depth where sound concrete is available. The sound
concrete level can be obtained after removal of any debris, muck etc. from the top.
The pile concrete should attain at least 75% of its required compressive strength before
testing is conducted. This can be checked with the help of 7 and 28 days cube test results.
The pile head at the testing level shall be made reasonably flat by chipping or by chisel. In
some cases, it can even be done using a grinder. Ensure that concrete is sound, hard and
good. No high strength mortar or cement paste shall be applied on the pile top to make it
smooth and even.
8. RESULT INTERPRETATIONS
The evaluation of data based on the reflectograms recorded during testing. A velocity record
from a perfect pile shaft (uniform and no soil resistance) exhibits the impact pulse, followed
by a flat zero response, until a reflection from the toe is observed with a velocity profile
similar to that of the impact event.

REPORT FOR PILE INTEGRITY TESTING Rev. No R0
The toe velocity reflection is an important record feature as it provides some evidence of a
continuous pile shaft and the first check in a record is therefore aimed at identifying the toe
reflection.
The method cannot be identifying the nature of defect as the wave reflects from a reduction
in either elastic modulus or cross section. Thus whether the defect is necking, honeycombs,
voids, soil inclusions, etc. they are all classified as major or minor defects.
Reflections are caused by variations in the pile's impedance. Impedance Z may be calculated
as Z=EA/c, where A is the cross-sectional area, E is the elastic modulus and c is wave velocity
of the material of the pile. Thus, reflections can be due to changes in either the cross-section
(size) or in the elastic modulus or specific weight (quality) of the material. Note that the wave
speed, c, is several orders of magnitudes greater (typically 3,300 to 4,200 m/s) than the pile
particle velocity.
Piles with a major bulb may show a reflection from bulb and a secondary reflection similar to a
defect. Such a secondary reflection should not be considered as a defect. The method is
intended to detect major defects and minor defects like localized loss of cover may not be
detected by this method. It is sometimes difficult to evaluate the magnitude of defect when
pile defects are at half the pile length.
A region of decreasing impedance generates a tensile reflection, producing a velocity peak in
the same direction as the impact. A region of increasing impedance causes a compressive
reflection, producing a velocity peak in the direction opposite the impact.
Typical velocity response for good pile and damaged pile shown below figure.

9. LIMITATIONS
Pile Integrity test does not provide the load carrying capacity of piles.
Pile Integrity test cannot be used to predict the verticality of the pile or displacement in its
position.
It is not recommended to conduct Pile Integrity test over the piles where the pile cap is
already constructed. This is generalized statement basis on our experience.
Pile Integrity test can evaluate piles up to an L/D ratio of 30 – 35. In some cases, the ratio may
be more than 35 subject to the variation in the resistance offered by the strata. This is
generalized statement on the basis of our experience.
This test may not detect all imperfections and minor deficiencies, but major defects within
the effective lengths can be identified. Further it is recommended that the engineer-in-charge
should use his/her judgment as to the acceptability of these piles considering other factors
such as load redistribution to adjacent pile, load transfer to the soil above the defect, applied
safety factors and structural load requirements.
Shafts with impedance variations due to multiple/highly variable cross sections are difficult or
impossible to evaluate.
If the pile toe reflection is not evident, the integrity evaluation might not be conclusive and
might be limited to a certain unknown depth. This limitation may apply to a long piles or piles
in soil that exhibit relatively high friction.
Integrity evaluation of cross sections below a major crack (that crosses the entire cross-
sectional area) is not possible.
The limit to the depths up to which the test can be carried on piles, depends on the
surrounding strata and damping within the concrete.
10. DISCUSSION OF TEST RESULTS
The test results for the 06 piles tested are attached in Annexure I of the report. The detailed
test reflectograms are attached in Annexure II of the report.
Wave speed for all the piles which were tested, varied from 3588 m/sec to 4042 m/sec.
The toe reflection is observed to be on the Opposite side of the impact in all the
reflectograms. This might be due to strata with higher density than that of the concrete,
around the pile toe.
