Sampling Methods - Simple Explanation with Examples

1. Probability Sampling Methods

Simple Random Sampling

- Explanation: Everyone has an equal chance of being selected.
- Example: Example: Picking 10 students randomly from a list of 100 students.

Systematic Sampling
- Explanation: Select every kth individual from a list.
- Example: Example: Choosing every 5th customer who enters a store.

Stratified Random Sampling

- Explanation: Divide population into groups and randomly sample from each.
- Example: Example: Splitting students by grade and selecting randomly from each grade.

Cluster Sampling
- Explanation: Divide population into clusters and randomly select entire clusters.
- Example: Example: Randomly selecting 3 schools out of 10 and surveying all students in those
schools.

Multi-Stage Sampling
- Explanation: Sampling in multiple stages using different techniques.
- Example: Example: First selecting districts, then schools within those districts, then students.

Area Sampling
- Explanation: Cluster sampling based on geographic areas.
- Example: Example: Surveying households from randomly selected cities.

2. Non-Probability Sampling Methods

Convenience Sampling
- Explanation: Select individuals who are easy to reach.
- Example: Example: Surveying people at a nearby coffee shop.

Judgment (Purposive) Sampling

- Explanation: Select individuals based on the researcher's judgment.
- Example: Example: A doctor choosing specific patients for a study.

Quota Sampling
- Explanation: Fill a quota for certain categories non-randomly.
- Example: Example: Selecting 50 men and 50 women for a survey without random selection.

Snowball Sampling
- Explanation: Existing subjects refer new participants.
- Example: Example: A researcher asks one drug user to refer other users for a study.

Panel Sampling
- Explanation: Same group of people are surveyed over time.
- Example: Example: Surveying the same 100 people every year to track opinions.
