Assessment of health care behaviors among Antenatal mothers in Tertiary hospital –
A Cross Sectional Study

Introduction:
Maternal health has been laid out as part of the Sustainable Development Goals to reduce the
global MMR to less than 70 per 100 000 live births by 2030. The World Health Organization (WHO)
establishes a supplementary national target that no country should have an MMR greater than 140 per 100
000 live births, still India showing high MMR 170 per 1, 00,000 live births. In developing countries should
focus to continuum of care for women,including commitments to sexual and reproductive health.
Objectives:
To assess the health care behaviors among ante natal mothers in tertiary hospital
Methodology:
Study design: Cross sectional study, Study period : 6months (January 2019 to May 2019)Study
population :pregnant mother attending ante natal outpatient in Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology,
Chengalpattu Medical College and [Link] tool : pre tested questionnaire by interview ,Sampling
method : simple random sampling method ,Sample size: 216
Results:
Among respondents, socio demographic profile showed 11.1%were less than 20 years
age..Educational level was observed as illiterate in 12.7% and working women were 24 %.Economic status
showed 25.7% were below poverty line. Health care behaviors among antenatal mothers revealed
primigravida 35.6%, multigravida 64.4%, women who aborted 6.4% , 8% had previous history of
LSCS.74% had regular antenatal checkup. Only 55.5% practicing antenatal diet,72.6% has knowledge on
exclusive breastfeeding, 46.7% had knowledge about danger signs,84.2% had knowledge about
contraception,49% knowledge about postnatal care.

Conclusion:
Moderate knowledge and health seeking behaviors among ANC mothers was [Link] is a
need for improving voluntary maternal health checkup and health education has to be emphasized among
ante - natal mothers to utilize health care services
