The Structure of Undergraduate (B.A.) syllabus as per National Education Policy 2020 w.e.f. 2021-22
Program Objectives
The syllabi in French are structured for the benefit of the learners with the aim of
1. facilitating acquisition of knowledge of French History, Culture and Civilization through French
language per se, which would enhance the perspective of ‘inter-cultural’ thought process among the
learners & encourage research studies ;
2. inducing the learners to discover the French literary movements and their significant contributions to
the world literatures at large, which is inclusive of Francophone studies;
3. training the learners in Translation [French to English & vice versa] and sensitizing the learners to
the significance & problematic of translation, also to encourage direct translation from French to
their mother tongue/other languages & vice versa, thereby enabling them to take up translation as
their profession as efficient bi-linguals;
4. initiating Commercial French & basic knowledge of Informatics in French in order to enable the
learners to equip themselves with the professional needs of globalised world at large in the
business/industry, international banks, since French is one of the main international languages. This
professional knowledge would broaden the scope of their employability in industries, both at national
& international business world;
5. enabling the learners to communicate fluently in French, in terms of (i) Written & Oral Production
(ii) Written & Oral Comprehension, viz., in acquiring soft skills in French: speaking, reading,
listening & comprehension.
Program Outcomes
1. The language acquisition at a higher level of French by the learners would have instilled confidence
among the learners in terms of communicative skills in French language;
2. The knowledge of the notions of translation and the practice of translations learnt in terms of skills
acquisition, would make the learners’ employability higher in the job market;
3. The knowledge of Commercial French would have given the learners an edge over the others in
terms of employability in job markets;
4. The aspects of ‘Teaching Methodology’ acquired by the learners would make them efficient
teachers of French as it would have equipped them in teaching skills of French teaching as a foreign
language with teaching jobs in the educational institutions;
5. The linguistic aspects, both general and French linguistics learnt during the course enables the
learners to take up research projects in the fields of lingual studies, translation studies, French
teaching Methodology (FLE/FLT), Comparative Studies, Francophone Studies, Inter-intra Cultural
Studies.
Eligibility: 1. Only those students who have prior knowledge of French are eligible to take French as DSC.
The students should have completed A1 and A2 (levels) from Alliance Française or Diploma in French or its
equivalent from our university or any other university from India or its equivalent from abroad or should
have studied French at P.U.C. (Karnataka)/HSC/12th class of CBSE/ICSC, etc with French as one of the
subjects/languages.
2. French can be taken by all the UG students as OEC, AECC and SEC..

French alphabet (small, capital, vowels); Numbers: Cardinal and Ordinal from 0 to 100,000; Greetings;
Common expressions(of daily life); Introduction of self and others; Identification of things, persons and
colours. days, months, week days; reading the clock/watch; Vocabulary and its usage in particular contexts.
Section – B
Articles: definite, Indefinite, contracted, partitifs,; some commonly used prepositions; Possessive adjectives;
Prepositions. First group verbs only ‘ER’ and their conjugaisons in present tense (verbs ‘manger’ and
‘Commencer’ type included).
Specific usage of ‘Être’ and ‘Avoir’.
Section – C
Introduction of self and others; simple/basic conversations in written and spoken form. Reading time.

Internal Assessment: 40 [10 marks for Dictation, 10 marks for Reading & 20 marks for Conversation].

CO 1. The learners would be able to make basic conversation in French pertaining to the daily life
situations;
CO 2. They would be equipped with the phonetic aspect of spoken French, viz., pronunciation and auditive
comprehension of French;
CO 3. They also would be able to communicate confidently and express themselves boldly with ‘linguistic
baggage’ learnt during this program.

After completion of the course:
CO 1. The learners would have the knowledge about the basics of French.

CO 3. They would be equipped with the lingual skills of Oral Production and Written Production in French.

Alphabet; Numbers-ordinal and cardinal; Basic Phonetics; Gender and number of nouns.
Articles: Definite, Indefinite, Partitive, Contracted.
Verbs: Auxiliary verbs [avoir and être], 1st group and 2 nd group verbs; Tenses: Present tense and futur
simple.
Unit-II/Section – B
Pronouns: Personal pronouns, Interrogative pronouns, Stress pronouns (Tonic pronouns); Adjectives:
Qualificative adjectives, Demonstrative adjectives; Interrogative adjectives. Negation: ne…pas;
Prépositions: Préposition + geographical name; Preposition + location, Preposition (chez) + stress pronoun;
Prepostions : de, à, aux, sur, sous, entre, etc. Vocabulary: Profession – Masculine/Feminine;
Unit-III/Section – C
Introduction of self and the others. Simple dialogues and conversations based on daily life
situations :shopping, restaurant, hotel reservation, buying tickets for travel: bus, train, plane, etc. Short
emails inviting a friend for the weekend, get-to-gether, watching movie/television, celebrating festivals,
birthdays, etc.
