Life Process

 What are life process?

i) The maintainance function of living organism must go on
even when they are not doing anything particular.
ii) The process which together perform this maintainance job
are life process.

Nutrition
Nutrients :- Group of food in which protein, fats vitamins and
minerals are involved is called nutrients.

Nutrition :- The process of intake of nutrients by an organism as

well as the utilization of nutrients by the organism is known as
nutrition.

Types of nutrition
i) Autotrophic nutrition
It is a process where an organism prepare its own food
they are known as autotrophs.
Eg. Green plants
ii) Heterotrophic nutrition
It is a type of nutrition in which organisms depend upon
other organism for food to survive.
Eg. Animals, humans
There are 3 types of heterotrophic nutrition :-
a) Saprophytic : Obtain food from dead and decaying
matter.
Eg. Fungi
b) Parasitic : Obtain food from host organism without
killing it.
Eg. Roundworm
c) Holozoic : Having solid matter and then digesting it is
holozoic mode of nutrition.
Eg. Animals

Photosynthesis
The process by which green plants make their own food from
carbon dioxide and water by using sunlight energy in the
presence of chlorophyll, is called photosynthesis.

1) Carbohydrates are utilized for providing energy to the plant.

6CO2 +12H2O Sunlight C6H12O6+ 6O2 + 6H2O
 Oxygen is released during photosynthesis.
 The process of photosynthesis takes place in the green
leaves of the plant.
 The food is prepared by the green leaves of the plant in the
form of simple sugar called glucose.
 The extra glucose is changed into another food called starch.
 This starch is stored in the leaves of the plant.
 The green plant convert sunlight energy into chemical
energy by making carbohydrates.
 The carbon dioxide gas enters the leaves of the plant
through stomata present on their surface.
2) Obtaining water for photosynthesis
The water required by the plants for photosynthesis is
absorbed by the of the plants from the soil through the process
of osmosis.
The water absorbed by the roots are of the plants are
transported upward through the xylem vessels to the leaves
where it reaches the photosynthetic cells.
3) Site of photosynthesis
The site of photosynthesis in a cell of a leaf are chloroplasts
which contain chlorophyll.
Chloroplasts are present in the photosynthetic cell (mesophyll
cells) of green plants. These cells contains more chlorophyll
than other plant cell.
Stomata
i) They allow the exchanges of gasses with the atmosphere.
ii) Evaporation of water from the leaf surface occurs through
the stomata.
iii) Allows the intake of carbon dioxide and to give out
oxygen during the process of the photosynthesis.
