that exceed the community’s or society’s ability to cope using its own resources.
Disasters can be natural, such as earthquakes and floods, or man-made, like industrial
accidents and conflicts.
Types of Disasters:
1. Natural Disasters:
- Geological: Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides.
- Meteorological: Cyclones, hurricanes, blizzards.
- Hydrological: Floods, tsunamis.
- Biological: Epidemics, pandemics, insect infestations.
2. Man-made Disasters:
- Technological: Industrial accidents, nuclear leaks, chemical spills.
- Environmental: Deforestation, pollution.
- Social: Terrorism, wars, civil unrest.
Principles of Disaster Management:
1. Preparedness: Planning and training before a disaster occurs to ensure effective
response.
2. Mitigation: Efforts to reduce the severity and impact of disasters.
3. Response: Immediate actions taken during and after a disaster to ensure safety and
provide emergency assistance.
4. Recovery: Long-term efforts to restore normalcy and rebuild affected areas.
5. Risk Assessment: Identifying potential hazards and vulnerabilities to reduce disaster
risk.
6. Coordination: Collaboration between government agencies, NGOs, and communities.
Plans of Disaster Management:
1. Pre-disaster Planning: Includes risk analysis, early warning systems, public awareness,
and capacity building.
2. Emergency Operations Plan: Provides a clear protocol for response and outlines roles
of all stakeholders.
3. Resource Management Plan: Ensures availability and deployment of resources such as
food, shelter, and medical aid.
4. Communication Plan: Maintains effective communication channels before, during, and
after disasters.
5. Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Plan: Focuses on rebuilding infrastructure, restoring
services, and psychological support.
Effective disaster management reduces loss of life and property and enhances community
resilience.
