Implicit Differentiation
Explicit function
The functions that we have met so far can be described by expressing one
variable explicitly in terms of another variable—for example,
y= or or y = x sin x . In general, y = f (x).
Implicit relation
Some functions, however, are defined implicitly by a relation
between x and y such as
x2 + y2 = 25
x3 + y3 = 6xy
In some cases, it is possible to solve such an equation
for y as an explicit function or several functions
(Implicit relation) of x.
Notice that:
Implicit relation
several functions of x
The process of differentiating the implicit function (implicit differentiation) requires to differentiate
both sides of the equation with respect to one of the two variables x or y according to the chain rule
to get dy/dx or dx /dy respectively
Higher Derivatives of a Function
𝑑𝑦
The first derivative is y' = = f' (x).
𝑑𝑥
The second derivative of the function f
𝑑 𝑑𝑦 𝑑2𝑦
( ) = y‘’= = f''(x)
𝑑𝑥 𝑑𝑥 𝑑𝑥 2
The third derivative of the function f and it is denoted by
𝑑3𝑦
the symbol 3 , and so on.
𝑑𝑥
The derivative is written from the order n as follows:
𝑑 𝑛 𝑦 (n)
y(n) = 𝑛 = f (x) where n is a positive integer number
