Three- with 1 girl and 2 boys
Six – with 2 girls and 4 boys
IV. Lesson Proper
A. Activity
THREE WAYS TO WRITE A RATIO
Ways Example
1. Colon form 2:3
2. Fraction form 2
3
3. Phrase form 2 to 3
PROPORTION
A proportion is the equality between two ratios. Each quantity in a proportion is called
term of the proportion. Thus in the proportion a: b = c: d, a, b, c, and d are the terms. b and
c are called means while a and d are called extremes.
Example 1. Using products of Means and Extremes
Thus, the equation 1:3 = 2:6 is a proportion.
Example 2. Using Cross Products
1 3
=
2 6
(1)(6) = (2)(3)
6=6
Thus, the equation 1:2 = 2:4 is a proportion.
Example 3. Using Simplifying ratios
2 3
=
4 6
2 2 3 3 1 1
÷ = ÷ → =
4 2 6 3 2 2
Thus, the equation 2:4 = 3:6 is a proportion.
B. Analysis
Ask the students:
When can we say that two ratios form a proportion?
C. Abstraction
A. Let the students:
Illustrate a proportion
a. Colon form
b. Fraction form
Check the equality of ratios.
a. Using product of Means and Extremes
b. Using cross products
c. Using Simplifying ratios
Tell whether a proportion is true or not.
Example:
The ratio of boys to girls as ratio of girls to boys in the class.
Colon form Fraction form
a. b. c.
24 10 24 10
= =
10 24 10 24
(24) (24) = (10) (10) 24 2 10 2 12 5
576 = 100 ÷ = ÷ → =
10 2 24 2 5 12
⸫ Not proportional/ proportion is not true
D. Application (Group Activity)
Instruction: Identify the means and extremes of a given pair of ratios and tell
whether it form a proportion or not.
Ratios Means Extremes Proportion or Not
1. 4 : 5 , 24 : 30
2. 5 : 6 , 20 : 24
3. 2 : 7 , 20 : 56
7 35
4. ,
10 70
6 9
5. ,
14 21
V. EVALUATION: ¼ sheet of paper
Instruction: Tell whether it is a proportion or not proportion.
1) 4 : 6 = 20 : 24
2) 9 : 6 = 36 : 24
3) 2 : 5 = 15 : 45
4) 3 : 5 = 6 : 10
5) 40 : 16 = 5 : 2
VI. ASSIGNMENT
Search about the properties of Proportion.
