Introduction
Mental health problems such as stress, anxiety, and depression affect
students worldwide. According to the World Health Organization (WHO, 2021), about
20% of adolescents experience mental health issues each year. These problems
often lead to poor focus, low grades, and decreased academic performance.
In the Philippines, mental health is becoming a concern among senior high
school students. A study by Reyes (2020) found that high levels of stress and
anxiety among Filipino students negatively affect their class participation and
academic outcomes. This shows that students’ mental health can influence their
school performance.
In Agusan del Sur National High School, some Grade 12 students report
experiencing academic pressure, stress, and emotional struggles. Teachers have
observed that students with higher stress levels often get lower scores in quizzes
and exams compared to those with better mental well-being.
By looking at the global, national, and local situations, it is clear that mental
health plays an important role in learning. This quantitative study will measure the
relationship between mental health (stress, anxiety, depression levels) and academic
performance (grades) of Grade 12 students at Agusan del Sur National High School.
The results will help provide evidence-based recommendations for improving
students’ well-being and academic success.
