SOLVING PROBLEMS INVOLVING CONIC SECTIONS

CONIC SECTION: Circle

A. Calculate the center coordinates and radius of the following circles:
a) x 2+ y 2−4 x−6 y−12=0
b) x 2+ y 2+ 3 x + y +10=0
c) 4 x 2+ 4 y 2−4 x+ 12 y −6=0
1. Calculate the equation of the circle that has its center at (3 ,−4) and the x-
axis as a tangent.
2. Find the equation of the circle with radius 5 whose center lies on x-axis and
passes through the point (2, 3).
3. Find the equation of a circle having (1, –2) as its center and passing through
the intersection of the lines 3x + y = 14 and 2x + 5y = 18.

CONIC SECTION: Parabola

1. If the points (0, 4) and (0, 2) are respectively the vertex and focus of a parabola, then find the equation of the
parabola.
2. A bridge has a parabolic arch that is 10 m high in the center and 30 m
wide at the bottom. Find the height of the arch 6 m from the center,
on either side.

CONIC SECTION: Ellipse

1. The CLSU Oval is elliptical which measures 36 feet wide and 92 feet long. If a person standing at one
focus, his shout can be heard by a person standing at the other focus.
How far apart are the two people?
2. A semi-elliptical archway over a one-way road has a height of 3 m
and a width of 12 m. The truck has a width of 3 m and a height of 2.5
m. Will the truck clear the opening of the archway?
CONIC SECTION: Hyperbola
1. Cross section of a nuclear cooling tower is in the shape of a
2 2
x y
hyperbola with equation: 2
− 2
=1.
(30) (144)
The tower is 150 m tall and the distance from the top of the tower to the center of the
hyperbola is half the distance from the base of the tower to the center of the hyperbola.
Find the diameter of the top and base of the tower.
2. An architect designs two houses that are shaped and positioned like a part of the branches
of the hyperbola whose equation is 625𝑦2−400𝑥2=250,000, where x and y are in yards.
How far apart are the houses at their closest point?
