Chapter 8
MIRACLE OF THE HOLY QURAN

“This is certainly a revelation from the Lord of all worlds.”

(Holy Quran, Surah Shuara, Ayat 192)

In the chapter “Epistemic Journey Towards the Truth” (Chapter 2) I

discussed the nature of philosophical questions and the various approaches
applied in search of truth about God. That is the truth about the existence of
God and about God’s attributes. I discussed various approaches used during
the course history including the route of philosophy, esoteric inspiration,
science, and religions to seek knowledge about God. I demonstrated that
prophethood is the only valid and reliable source of knowledge about God, His
nature, and His attributes. After a detailed epistemic analysis, I demonstrated
that prophets can be fully trusted in matters related to God and His attributes.
I also mentioned that any wise person can reach this conclusion by performing
an objective analysis as done in Chapter 2. However, not everyone is equally
intelligent therefore many people cannot do such in-depth analyses. Moreover,
some people may require additional affirmation regarding the truthfulness of
prophets before making the final decision to believe in them. They are looking
for some sort of final sign from God. For such people, God gave His prophets
miracles as additional support to recognize their truthfulness.
This chapter builds on the discussion developed in Chapter 2 regarding
the high validity and reliability of knowledge provided by prophets regarding
God. It starts with a general discussion of the miracles of the prophets followed
by a detailed discussion of the timeless miracle of the last prophet of God which
is the miracle of the Holy Quran. This is the miracle we can still witness and
which proves the true prophethood of Prophet Muhammad PBUH.

Dr. Adeel Zeerak 1

MIRACLES OF THE PROPHETS
Miracles are extraordinary events performed by prophets through the
divine power of Allah SWT. They serve as signs to validate the prophet's divine
mission and guide people towards the truth. While miracles can be a powerful
tool for establishing a prophet's authenticity, they are not a prerequisite for
prophethood. The number and nature of miracles can vary depending on the
needs of the people, and the will of Allah SWT. Ultimately, miracles are a
manifestation of Allah's power, not a personal achievement of the prophet.
The act of the miracles by the prophets is entirely dependent upon the will
of Allah SWT. Thus, a miracle is neither a personal deed of a prophet nor the
requirement of his prophethood nor a criterion of his status among the
prophets. A higher-ranking prophet may show fewer miracles than a
comparatively lower-ranking prophet. Depending upon the situation, these just
happen with the will of Allah SWT by a prophet to demonstrate his truthfulness
as and when required by Allah SWT. The type of miracle given to a prophet
also depends upon the circumstances prevalent in the society where the
prophet is sent for guidance. The miracles of the prophets can serve several
purposes as mentioned in the following text:

Proof of Prophethood
Miracles are usually seen as a way for Allah SWT to validate the prophet's
message. By witnessing events that cannot be explained by human means,
people are more likely to believe that the prophet is truly speaking for God.
However, it is not necessary that everyone would start to believe in the prophet
after witnessing the miracles. Many stubborn people may choose to remain
misguided even after witnessing clear miracles due to various worldly reasons.
On the other hand, wise people may choose to believe in prophets even without
the help of any sort of miracle. The following verses of the Holy Quran
elaborate on the various types of miracles given to Prophet Esa AS (Jesus),
Prophet Musa AS (Moses), and Prophet Saleh AS:
Prophet Esa AS (Jesus): “(Call to mind the time) when Allah will say, O Isa,
son of Maryam, remember My blessing upon you and upon your mother; when I supported
you with the Holy Spirit. You spoke to people while you were still in the cradle and when you
grew to middle age. I taught you the Book and the Wisdom, the Torah and the Injil. You
created from clay something in the shape of a bird, then you blew on it, and it became a bird
by My leave. You cured those born blind and lepers by My leave. You raised the dead by My
leave. I kept the children of Israel away from you when you came to them with clear signs,
and the disbelievers among them said, This is nothing but a clear magic.” (Surah Maidah,
Ayat 110)

Dr. Adeel Zeerak 2

Prophet Musa AS (Moses): “Musa said, O Pharaoh, I am a messenger from
the Lord of all the worlds; it befits me not to say anything about Allah except the truth. I
have come to you with a clear sign from your Lord. So, let the children of Israel go with me.
He said, If you have come with a sign, then bring it forth, if you are really truthful. So he
threw down his staff, and in no time it was a vivid serpent; and he drew out his hand, and it
was luminous for the onlookers.” (Surah Araf, Ayat 104 – 108)
Prophet Salih AS: “To Thamud, (We sent) their brother, Salih. He said, O my
people, worship Allah. You have no god other than Him. There has come to you a clear sign
from your Lord. This is the she-camel of Allah, a sign for you. So, leave her to eat on the
earth of Allah, and do not touch her with mischief, lest a painful punishment should seize
you.” (Surah Araf, Ayat 73)

Strengthening Faith
Miracles can inspire awe and strengthen the faith of believers. Witnessing
the divine at work firsthand can solidify one's trust in God and the prophet's
teachings. For example, the following verses of the Holy Quran inform us that
the disciples of Prophet Esa AS (Jesus) asked for a miracle to further strengthen
their faith despite already believing in him before this miracle:
“When the disciples said, O Isa, son of Maryam, can your Lord send down to us a
repast from the heavens? He said, fear Allah if you are believers. They said, we wish that we
eat from it, and our hearts be satisfied, and we may know for sure that you have told us the
truth, and we may become witnesses to it. Esa son of Maryam said, O Allah, our Lord, send
down to us a repast from heaven which may be a happy occasion for us, for all our generations
present and future, and a sign from You, and give us provisions. You are the best Giver of
Provisions. Allah said, I am going to send it down to you; but whoever among you disbelieves
after that, I shall give him such a punishment as I shall not give to anyone else in all the
worlds.” (Surah Maidah, Ayats 112 – 115)
These verses of the Holy Quran also show that miracles are the acts of
God that are shown by a prophet. Prophet Esa AS (Jesus) prayed to God for
this miracle of repast from the heavens. These verses also showed that the
severity of accountability by Allah SWT increases for a person who has
witnessed His clear miracles.

Overcoming Challenges
Sometimes miracles are used by prophets to overcome obstacles or
challenges in their mission. This could involve protecting them from harm,
influencing events, or providing for their needs. The following verses of the
Holy Quran give two examples of such miracles with Prophet Musa AS (Moses)
and Prophet Ibrahim AS (Abraham):
Dr. Adeel Zeerak 3
Prophet Musa AS (Moses): “So they (the people of Pharaoh) pursued them (the
people of Musa) at the time of sunrise. And when the two hosts saw each other, the companions
of Musa said, Surely we are overtaken. He said, Never! Indeed with me is my Lord. He will
guide me. So We revealed to Musa saying, strike the sea with your staff. So it was severed
apart, and each part became like a big mountain. Then We brought others close to that place.
And We saved Musa and all those with him. Then we drowned the others. Surely, in this
there is a sign, but most of them are not believers,” (Surah Shuara, Ayats 60 – 67)
Prophet Ibrahim AS (Abraham): “They said, (O people) burn him and help
your gods, if you are to take action. We (Allah) said, O fire, be cold and safe for Ibrahim.
And they intended to harm him, but We made them the worst losers.” (Surah Anbiya, Ayats
68 – 70)

NEED FOR A TIMELESS MIRACLE

We are living in a unique era when the institution of prophethood has
ended by the will of God. It means that no other prophet will be sent to this
world now. I have made a detailed discussion on this topic in Chapter 2 under
the heading of “Why prophets have stopped coming?” Therefore, I will not
repeat all the discussion here. God sent many prophets to the world with some
unique miracles. As discussed earlier, these miracles were a further aid in
recognizing the truthfulness of a prophet’s teachings. But what about us? Is
there a miracle present today that we can still witness? The answer is yes. There
is a timeless miracle of the Holy Quran that can be even experienced today by
us and by the people who will come in the future.
Prophet Muhammad PBUH was not only the last prophet sent by God
but was also the greatest of all the prophets. The institution of prophethood
not only ended upon Prophet Muhammad’s PBUH arrival but it also reached
its climax. Unlike previous messengers of God, the Prophet Muhammad
PBUH was not just sent specifically towards a particular nation and for a
particular time. Instead, he was sent with the final message from Allah SWT
towards the whole of mankind and for all time to come. God's guidance to
mankind sent through His various prophets was ultimately completed with the
prophethood of Prophet Muhammad PBUH.
Being a Prophet, Prophet Muhammad PBUH displayed miracles on
various occasions. One example of such a miracle is mentioned in the following
Hadith: “Narrated Anas bin Malik: The Prophet asked for water and a tumbler with a
broad base and no so deep, containing a small quantity of water, was brought to him whereby
he put his fingers in it." Anas further said, “I noticed the water springing out from amongst
his fingers." Anas added, “estimated that the people who performed ablution with it numbered

Dr. Adeel Zeerak 4

between seventy to eighty." (Reported in Bukhari) We believe that this miracle is
correct but we cannot witness this miracle or any such miracle as Prophet
Muhammad PBUH is not present with us. Prophet Muhammad PBUH being
the last prophet for everyone for all time to come must have been given a
miracle that can be experienced by us and all generations to come. This miracle
is the miracle of the Holy Quran. Prophet Muhammad PBUH said, "There was
no prophet among the prophets but was given miracles because of which people had security or
had belief, but what I was given was the Divine Inspiration which Allah revealed to me. So,
I hope that my followers will be more than those of any other prophet on the Day of
Resurrection." (Reported in Bukhari).
The Holy Quran being a miracle should be a miracle for the people of the
Arabian Peninsula who were present at the time of Prophet Muhammad PBUH
as he was directly sent towards them. Additionally, the Holy Quran should be
a miracle for the people for all times to come including people like us who are
currently living in this world. The miracle of the Holy Quran serves both of
these purposes. The remainder of this chapter has discussed this miraculous
aspect of the Holy Quran from various aspects including a discussion on the
compatibility of the Quran with the latest scientific discoveries. Many people
convert to Islam just by experiencing the miracle of the Holy Quran.

INIMITABILITY OF THE QURAN

Holy Quran's language is so perfect and eloquent that it cannot be imitated
by any human being, even the most gifted poets and orators. Prophet
Muhammad PBUH was sent directly to Arabs of that time who excelled at
poetry and rhetoric. Pre-Islamic Arabia held poets in high esteem, valuing their
eloquence and mastery of language. The Quraish tribe of Makkah was known
for its skilled poets who composed powerful and beautiful verses. The Holy
Quran, revealed to Prophet Muhammad PBUH, was unlike anything they had
heard before. Its language was powerful, and rhythmic, and conveyed profound
messages about God, morality, and humanity. The Quraish, skeptical of the
message, accused Prophet Muhammad PBUH of being a poet or a soothsayer
(fortuneteller). In response, the Holy Quran itself challenged the people to
make some text like that of the Quran. According to the Holy Quran:

Dr. Adeel Zeerak 5

“If you are in doubt about what We have revealed to Our servant, then bring a Surah
similar to this, and do call your supporters other than Allah, if you are true. But if you do
not – and you will never be able to – then guard yourselves against the Fire, the fuel of
which will be men and stones. It has been prepared for disbelievers.”
(Surah Baqarah, Ayats 23 & 24)
This challenge of the Holy Quran was significant because it addressed the
expertise of the Quraish in their domain which is language. But Quraish could
not produce anything comparable to the Holy Quran. This failure strengthened
the belief of Muslims in the divine origin of the Holy Quran.
The Holy Quran started to be revealed to Prophet Muhammad PBUH at
the age of forty years. He had spent his entire life with the people of Arabia.
He was Ummi (this term refers to a person who cannot read or write). He never
attended a school and never took lessons from anyone. He used to herd goats
and was an orphan. He was neither raised by a family with a literary background
nor he was born into a royal family. No one ever read or listened to any piece
of literature or poetry from Prophet Muhammad PBUH before the revelation
of the Holy Quran. So how could he suddenly start revealing the verses of the
Holy Quran which even literature experts were unable to imitate, despite an
open challenge? If the Quran were not God’s word then it would have been
very easy for disbelievers to reject it by accepting this open challenge. But no
one accepted the challenge. So, the Holy Quran was a miracle for the people
towards whom Prophet Muhammad PBUH was directly sent as a prophet, that
is the people of the Arabian Peninsula.
People are continually discovering new and novel things in the Holy
Quran regarding its miraculous nature including its structure, language, and
selection of words. One can find such material easily on the internet for
example the videos on the discovery of the ring structure of the Holy Quran,
pairs of Quranic chapters, smart selection of words, etc. I am not discussing all
these things here to remain brief. However, I would like to quote here only one
example of such discoveries regarding the language and structure of the Holy
Quran. 1

Dr. Adeel Zeerak 6

“(O Prophet,) surely We have given to you Al-Kauthar. So, offer Salah (prayer) to your
Lord, and sacrifice. Surely it is your enemy whose traces are cut off.”
This chapter (Surah Kausar) is the shortest chapter of the Holy Quran.
Surah Kausar has only 3 verses (Ayats). In the second verse of this surah, it is
commanded to perform Sacrifice. The word “Nahr”, which means to sacrifice
a camel, is used in Arabic for sacrifice. Muslims perform this sacrifice annually
on the 10th of the Islamic month of Zilhajj. Surprisingly, the number 10 is
coded in various ways in this chapter.
The total number of words in this chapter is 10.

The three verses of this chapter have 10 different Arabic letters.

The number of letters that appear only once in the entire chapter is 10.

The first letter of the Arabic alphabet Alif / Hamza is included 10 times
in the entire chapter. It is the most repeated letter in this chapter.

Dr. Adeel Zeerak 7

In the second verse, there is the word “Nahr” which means to sacrifice.
This annual sacrifice is done by Muslims on the 10th of Zilhajj.

The letter at the end of each verse is “Ra”. In Arabic, this letter is the 10th
letter of the Arabic alphabet.

Isn’t it amazing! In just three verses, the number 10 is highlighted in so

many ways. Many other amazing things are being continually discovered in the
Holy Quran.

SCIENTIFIC MIRACLE OF THE QURAN

The Holy Quran was sent by Allah SWT for the guidance of mankind. It
is a rich and multifaceted text containing things like core beliefs of Islam, moral
guidance, historical narratives, prayers and supplications, law, and social code.
It can be called a book of signs. The Quran itself uses the word “ayat” which
translates to “signs” or “verses”. Thus, the Holy Quran is filled with signs
pointing toward the existence of God and the truth of Islam. The Holy Quran
itself, its eloquence, and its rhythmic language are seen as signs of its divine
origin.
Allah SWT says in the Holy Quran, “We will show them Our signs in the universe
and within their own beings until it will become manifest to them that it is the truth. Is it not
enough about your Lord that He is witness to everything?” (Surah Fussilat, Ayat 53).
The Holy Quran is not a book of science, nevertheless, the book contains
many verses or signs that are scientific in nature. Such verses of the Holy Quran
accurately discuss some scientific phenomena that were discovered centuries
later after the revelation of the Quran. The Quranic verses which foreshadow

Dr. Adeel Zeerak 8

scientific discoveries are signs of the Quran's divine knowledge. This miracle
of the Holy Quran serves as evidence of God, His knowledge of all things, and
proof of His divine word. This miracle of the Holy Quran is more relevant to
us as we are living in an age of tremendous scientific progress. Such a scientific
miracle of the Quran could not be understood by the people of Arabia at the
time of Prophet Muhammad PBUH. It explains why the Holy Quran used the
words “We will show them Our signs in the universe …” in the aforementioned
verse from the Quran.
To further elaborate on this point, I will start my discussion with a few
verses of the Holy Quran regarding the universe and its creation. Before we
proceed, please consider that there are several scientific theories on various
topics that are not all true. Science also changes with time due to additional
discoveries. Therefore, here I will only quote those scientific discoveries that
are proven and considered as scientific facts to prove my point.

Big Bang
Big Bang theory is one of the greatest discoveries of science. The initial
concept of the Big Bang theory emerged in 1927. Later the theory gained
traction and became widely accepted due to growing evidence throughout the
20th century. I have already discussed in detail the topic of the creation of the
universe by “Big Bang” in Chapter 7 of this book. I wrote that early in the 20th
century, astronomers generally did not believe in the origin of the universe. The
prevailing view, dating back to ancient Greece, was of an eternal and static
universe. However, the 20th century brought a revolution in the field of
cosmology. Edwin Hubble's observations of an expanding universe in the
1920s challenged the static view of the universe. Thus, two contrasting theories
emerged: the “Steady State Theory” and the “Big Bang Theory”.
The Steady-State theory, championed by Fred Hoyle, proposed an eternal
universe, constantly expanding but maintaining a uniform density through the
continuous creation of new matter. The Big Bang theory, with Georges
Lemaître as an early proponent, proposed a dramatic origin for the universe in
a single, momentous event that is a colossal explosion from which all matter
and energy erupted. The theory envisioned a universe constantly cooling and
evolving, with galaxies and stars forming over time. Later, the discovery of
cosmic microwave background radiation (CMB) in 1965 strongly supported the
Big Bang theory. As further evidence accumulated with time, the Big Bang
theory became the dominant theory for the origin of the universe.
The theory proposes a transformative moment where the universe we
know began. The point of singularity in the Big Bang theory refers to a point
in time way back in the past (around 13.78 billion years ago) where the universe

Dr. Adeel Zeerak 9

is predicted to have been infinitely dense and hot. It was like squeezing all the
matter and energy in the entire cosmos into a single point with zero volume.
You will be surprised to know that the Holy Quran contains the following verse
discussing the origin of the universe:

“Do not the Unbelievers see that the heavens and the earth were joined together (as one unit
of creation), before We clove them asunder, and We made from water every living thing.
Will they not then believe?”
(Surah Anbiyah, Ayat 30)
Strange! Isn’t it? In Arabic dictionaries, the word “ratq” in this verse of
the Holy Quran is translated as "sewn to" which means "mixed in each,
blended". It is used to refer to two different substances that make up a whole.
The phrase "we unstitched" is the verb “fataqa” in Arabic in this verse. It
implies that something comes into being by tearing apart or destroying the
structure of “ratq”. Therefore, according to this verse, the sky and earth were
at first in a state of “ratq”. They were then separated, that is, “fataqa”.
Intriguingly, when we remember the first moments of the Big Bang, we see that
a single point included all the matter in the universe. In other words, everything,
including "the heavens and earth" which were not created yet, was included in
this point in a condition of “ratq”. This point (singularity) exploded violently,
causing its matter to “fataqa” and in the process creating the structure of the
whole universe.
When we compare the expressions in the verse with scientific findings, we
see that they are in perfect agreement with each other. The striking similarity
between the Quranic verse and Big Bang is inescapable! How could a book,
which first appeared in the deserts of Arabia around 1450 years ago, contain
this profound scientific truth discovered in the 20th century? How is it possible?
It is only possible because Allah SWT Who created this universe is also the
author of this book, the Holy Quran.

Gaseous mass before galaxies

Scientists inform that before the galaxies in the universe were formed,
celestial matter was initially in the form of gaseous matter. The early universe
was not filled with stars and galaxies, but rather a hot, murky soup of
elementary particles. As the universe expanded and cooled, these particles
coalesced into mostly hydrogen gas, with some helium formed during the Big

Dr. Adeel Zeerak 10

Bang's nucleosynthesis phase. Traces of the element lithium might have also
been present. These light elements are what astronomers refer to as
"primordial" because they were the first to form in the universe. Due to the
extreme temperatures, this early hydrogen gas was mostly ionized, that is, its
atoms had been stripped of their electrons.
As the universe continued expanding, it cooled significantly. This allowed
the free electrons to recombine with hydrogen nuclei, forming neutral
hydrogen gas. This period is known as the recombination era. Over vast scales,
the density of this gas was not perfectly uniform. Tiny fluctuations in density
eventually grew due to gravity, becoming the seeds for the first stars and
galaxies to form hundreds of millions of years after the Big Bang.
Thus, scientists inform us that huge gaseous matter or clouds were present
before the formation of the galaxies. The Holy Quran has used the word
“dukhaan” meaning “smoke” to refer to this state of the universe in the
following verse:

“Then He turned towards the heaven when it was (still like) smoke, saying to it and to the
earth, ‘Submit, willingly or unwillingly.’ They both responded, ‘We submit willingly.”
(Surah Fussilat, Ayat 11)
This information regarding the gaseous matter before the creation of stars
and galaxies was not known to anyone at the time of Prophet Muhammad
PBUH. Science was much more primitive during those days and even centuries
later. What then, could have been the source of this knowledge? The one true
Almighty God, Allah SWT.

Expansion of the universe

In the early 20th century, Vesto Slipher observed a redshift in light coming
from distant galaxies. This observation meant the light waves were stretched
out, which could be interpreted as the galaxies moving away from us. Theorists
like Alexander Friedmann around the same time were using Einstein's
equations to predict an expanding universe. Knut Lundmark presented some
observational evidence for the expansion in 1924. In 1929, American
astronomer Edwin Hubble provided observational evidence that all galaxies
were moving away from one another. This implied that the universe is
expanding. Thus, the expansion of the universe is now an established scientific
fact. Stephen Hawking wrote in his book “A Brief History of Time” that the

Dr. Adeel Zeerak 11

“discovery that the Universe is expanding was one of the great intellectual
revolutions of the 20th century.” 2 The Holy Quran, however, mentioned this
expansion of the universe, before man even learned to build a telescope. Holy
Quran mentions:

“And it is We who have constructed the heaven with might, and verily, it is We who
are steadily expanding it.”
(Surah Dhariyat, Ayat 47)
The word "heaven" stated in this verse, is used in various places in the
Holy Quran with the meaning of space and universe. Here again, the word is
used with the same meaning. The Arabic word “musioon” in this verse is
correctly translated as “expanding it”, and it refers to the creation of the
expanding vastness of the universe. In other words, the Holy Quran reveals
that the universe is being expanded by Allah SWT. How could a book, which
first appeared in the deserts of Arabia around 1450 years ago, contain this
profound scientific truth discovered in the 20th century? Isn’t it mind-blowing?

Iron
The following verse of the Holy Quran talks about iron:

“Indeed, We sent Our messengers with clear proofs, and with them We sent down the
Scripture and the balance (of justice) so that people may administer justice. And We sent
down iron with its great might, benefits for humanity, and means for Allah to prove who
(is willing to) stand up for Him and His messengers without seeing Him. Surely Allah is
All-Powerful, Almighty.”
(Surah Hadid, Ayat 25)
The word “sent down”, particularly used in this verse for iron, could be
thought of as having a metaphorical meaning to explain. However, when we
take into consideration the literal meaning of the word, that is, “being physically
sent down from the sky”, we appreciate that this verse implies a very significant
scientific miracle. Modern astronomical findings have disclosed that the iron

Dr. Adeel Zeerak 12

found on Earth has come from the giant stars in outer space. The heavy metals
in the universe are produced in the core of big stars. Our solar system, however,
does not possess a suitable structure for producing iron on its own. Thus, iron
can only be produced in much bigger stars than the Sun, where the temperature
reaches a few hundred million degrees and pressure is extremely high.
When the amount of iron exceeds a certain level in a star, the star can no
longer hold it, and eventually explodes in what is called a “nova” or a
“supernova”. As a result of this explosion, meteors containing iron are
scattered around the universe. They move through the void until attracted by
the gravitational force of a celestial body. All this shows that iron was not
created in the Earth, but was carried from exploding stars in space via meteors.
Thus, iron was “sent down to earth”, in exactly the same way as stated in the
verse of the Holy Quran. This fact could not have been scientifically known in
the 7th century at the time of Prophet Muhammad PBUH when the Holy
Quran was revealed.

Mountains
Scientists tell us that the radius of the Earth is about 6,035 km and the
crust on which we live is very thin, ranging between 2 to 35 km. The earth’s
crust has a high possibility of shaking as it is thin. Mountains act like stakes or
tent pegs that hold the earth’s crust and give it stability. Most of a mountain
extends far below the surface, much like a hidden peg. This “root” of
mountains can be several times deeper than the part we see above ground.
Earth's crust is broken into giant, moving plates. Mountains form where these
plates collide and push against each other. These collisions and the deep roots
help to stabilize the plates and reduce the shaking of the Earth's surface. The
Holy Quran contains exactly such a description of mountains in the following
verse:

“Have We not smoothed out the earth (like a bed), and (made) the mountains as (its)
pegs”.
(Surah Naba, Ayats 6 & 7)
The word “awtaad” in this verse means stakes or pegs like those used to
anchor a tent. They are the deep foundations of geological folds.

Dr. Adeel Zeerak 13

Figure 33: Root of a mountain like a peg

A book entitled “Earth” is regarded as a basic reference textbook on

geology in many universities. One of the authors of this book, Dr. Frank Press,
was the President of the Academy of Sciences in the USA for 12 years. He was
also the Science Advisor to former US President Jimmy Carter. In this book,
he illustrates the mountain in a wedge shape and the mountain itself as a small
part of the whole, whose root is deeply entrenched in the earth. According to
Dr. Frank Press, the mountains play an important role in stabilizing the crust
of the earth. The Holy Quran clearly mentions the function of the mountains
in preventing the earth from shaking in the following verse:

“And We have placed firm mountains upon the earth so it does not shake with them, and
made in it broad pathways so they may find their way.”
(Surah Anbiya, Ayat 31)

Relativity of time
Time is not as constant as it seems to be. The relativity of time is a proven
scientific fact now. This was revealed by Albert Einstein's “Theory of
Relativity” in the early years of the 20th century. Until that time, people did not
know that time was a relative concept, and it could change according to the
environment. According to Einstein's theory of relativity, time is relative to
your motion and your position. Just imagine two clocks, one speeding through
space and one stationary on earth. The clock traveling at high speeds would
tick slower compared to the clock on the Earth. This phenomenon is called
“Time Dilation”. Gravity also affects time, with stronger gravity causing time

Dr. Adeel Zeerak 14

to run slightly slower. This implies that astronauts on the International Space
Station age a tiny bit slower than people on Earth.

Figure 34: Time dilation formula

Many verses of the Holy Quran hint towards the relativity of time. For
example, in some verses, it is indicated that people can perceive time differently.
Thus, sometimes people can perceive a very short period as a very long time.
Following are few verses of the Holy Quran hinting towards this phenomenon:

“The day they will see it, it will seem to them as if they did not live (in the world) but only
for one afternoon or for the morning thereof.”
(Surah Naziat, ayat 46)

“So endure patiently, as did the Messengers of Firm Resolve. And do not (seek to) hasten
(the torment) for the deniers. On the Day they see what they have been threatened with, it
will be as if they had only stayed (in this world) for an hour of a day. (This is) a (sufficient)
warning! Then, will anyone be destroyed except the rebellious people?”
(Surah Ahqaf, Ayat 35)

“The Day when He will gather them (in the next life,) they will feel as if they had not
stayed (in the world) any longer than a fraction of a day. They will recognize each other.
Losers, indeed, are those who deny that they will ever face Allah; they are not on the right

Dr. Adeel Zeerak 15

path.”
(Surah Yunus, Ayat 45)

“They challenge you (O Prophet) to hasten the torment. And Allah will never fail in His
promise. But a day with your Lord is indeed like a thousand years by your counting.”
(Surah Hajj, Ayat 47)

Embryology
Some verses of the Holy Quran discuss the creation of human beings. For
example, the following verse of the Holy Quran talks about the development
of a child inside the mother’s womb:

“We have created man from an extract of clay. Then We made him a sperm-drop in a firm
resting place. Then We turned the sperm-drop into a clot, then We turned the clot into a
fetus-lump, then We turned the fetus-lump into bones, then We clothed the bones with flesh;
thereafter We developed it into another creature. So, glorious is Allah, the Best of the
creators.”
(Surah Muminoon, Ayst 12 – 14)
Dr. Professor Keith Moore was the President of the Canadian Association
of Anatomists, Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology, University of
Toronto. He is considered an authority on the subject of human embryology.
A group of Muslim Scholars collected information concerning embryology and
other sciences in the Holy Quran and authentic Hadith and translated it into
English. This information was then presented to Dr. Professor Keith Moore.
He was then asked to give his opinion regarding the information presented to
him. After carefully examining it, Dr. Keith Moore said that most of the
information concerning embryology mentioned in the Quran and the authentic
Hadith is in perfect harmony with modern discoveries in the field of
embryology and does not conflict with them in any way.

Dr. Adeel Zeerak 16

He further said that there were a few verses of the Holy Quran, however,
on whose scientific accuracy he could not comment. He could not say whether
the statements were true or false, since he was himself unaware of the
information contained therein. There was also no mention of this information
in modern literature on embryology. One such verse of the Holy Quran is,
“Proclaim! (or Read!) In the name of thy Lord and Cherisher, Who created – Created man,
out of a (mere) clot of congealed blood.” (Surah Alaq, verses 1 & 2). The Arabic word
“alaq” used in this verse, besides meaning a congealed clot of blood, also means
something that clings, a leech-like substance. Dr. Keith Moore did not know at
that time if a human embryo in the initial stages appears like a leech. To check
this out he studied the initial stage of the embryo under a very powerful
microscope and compared what he observed with the diagram of a leech. He
was astonished at the striking resemblance between the two.

Figure 35: Leech-like shape of the human embryo

In the same manner, he acquired more information on embryology, that
was not known to him, from the Holy Quran. He answered about eighty
questions dealing with embryological data mentioned in the Holy Quran and
Hadith. He noted that the information contained in the Holy Quran and Hadith
was in full agreement with the latest discoveries in the field of embryology,
Professor Moore said, “If I was asked these questions thirty years ago, I would
not have been able to answer half of them for lack of scientific information”. 3
Isn’t it surprising? This is the scientific miracle of the Holy Quran.
According to another verse of the Holy Quran, “…. He creates you in the
wombs of your mothers (in stages), one development after another, in three layers of
darkness….” (Surah Zumar, Ayat 6). According to Professor Dr. Keith Moore,
these three veils of darkness in the Holy Quran refer to (a) the anterior
abdominal wall of the mother, (b) the uterine wall, and (c) the amnio-chorionic
Dr. Adeel Zeerak 17
membrane.
Dr. Keith Moore at that time was the author of the book “The Developing
Human”. After acquiring new knowledge from the Holy Quran, he wrote, in
1982, the 3rd edition of the same book, “The Developing Human”. The book
was the recipient of an award for the best medical book written by a single
author. This book has been translated into several major languages of the world
and is used as a textbook of embryology in the first year of medical studies.
Numerous verses of the Holy Quran can be discussed here under the
heading of the scientific miracle of the Holy Quran. However, to remain brief,
I discussed only a few examples to prove the point. Any reader interested in a
detailed comparison of the Holy Quran with modern science may consult the
following three good books on the topic:
• “The Quran and Modern Science: Compatible or Incompatible?” by Dr.
Zakir Naik.
• “Miracles of the Quran” by Harun Yahya.
• “The Bible, the Quran and Science” by Dr. Maurice Bucaille.
The scientific miracle of the Holy Quran is especially for us and future
generations as many things related to science mentioned in the Holy Quran are
continuously being proven as truth. Allah SWT gave Prophet Muhammad
PBUH a special miracle of the Quran that corresponds with the current era of
knowledge and scientific progress. Many people including scientists have
openly admitted the truth of Islam after experiencing the miracle of the Holy
Quran. For example, during the Seventh Medical Conference in Dammam,
Saudi Arabia, in 1981, Dr. Keith Moore said, "It is clear to me that these
statements must have come to Muhammad (PBUH) from God, or Allah SWT
because most of this knowledge was not discovered until many centuries later.
This proves to me that Muhammad must have been a messenger of God or
Allah." He also says, "I have no difficulty in my mind reconciling that this is a
divine inspiration or revelation, which led him (Prophet Muhammad PBUH)
to these statements.” 4
Dr. Maurice Bucaille was a French doctor and a specialist in
gastroenterology. He is most famous for his book "The Bible, the Quran and
Science." Dr. Maurice Bucaille after thorough research, has written this
statement in his book ‘The Bible the Quran and Science’, “….I had to
acknowledge the evidence in front of me: the Quran did not contain a single
statement that was assailable from a modern scientific point of view.” 5 Dr.
Maurice Bucaille accepted Islam after seeing this miracle of the Holy Quran.

FUTURE EVENTS FORETOLD IN THE
QURAN
Another miraculous aspect of the Holy Quran is that it foretold many
important events that would occur in the future. Following are some examples
of such foretold events that proved to be true with time. Such accurate
prophecies of the future also prove that the Holy Quran is the true word of
Allah SWT.

Victory of Romans over Persians

The Holy Quran made the following prediction regarding the victory of
the Roman Empire after its defeat by the Persian Empire. No one at that time
expected the victory of the Romans over the Persians due to their crushing
defeat at the hands of the Persians. But the Holy Quran predicted the contrary
and it came true with time. The prediction made in these verses is one of the
most outstanding evidence of the Holy Quran's being the Word of Allah SWT
and the Prophet Muhammad PBUH being a true Messenger of Allah SWT.

“The Romans have been defeated in the nearer land; and they, after their defeat, will
triumph within a few years. To Allah belonged the matter before and (to Him it
belongs) thereafter. And on that day the believers will rejoice with Allah‘s help. He helps
whomsoever He wills. And He is the Mighty, the Very-Merciful. It is a promise from
Allah. Allah does not fail in His promise, but most of the people do not know.”
(Surah Rome, Ayat 2 – 6)
Following is the background of this great unexpected event. Byzantine
(Roman) Emperor Maurice was overthrown by Phocus, who captured the
throne and became the emperor. Phocus got the Emperor's five sons executed
in front of him and then got the Emperor killed as well. A few days after this
the empress along with three daughters were also sentenced to death. The event
provided Khusrau Parvez, the Sassanid emperor of Iran, a valid excuse to attack
Byzantium (Roman Empire) as Emperor Maurice had been his benefactor in

Dr. Adeel Zeerak 19

the past. Therefore, Khusrau Parvez declared that he would avenge his
benefactor upon Phocus. Thus, the war started in 603 A.D.
Within a few years, putting the Phocus armies to rout in succession,
Khusrau Parvez reached Edessa (modern, Urfa) in Asia Minor on the one hand,
and Aleppo and Antioch in Syria, on the other. When the Byzantine ministers
saw that Phocus could not save the country, they sought the African governor's
help, who sent his son, Heraclius, to Constantinople with a strong fleet. Thus,
Phocus was immediately deposed and Heraclius was made the emperor of
Rome. Heraclius treated Phocus as he had treated Maurice. This happened in
610 A.D., the year the Prophet Muhammad PBUH was appointed to
Prophethood. The moral excuse for which Khusrau Parvez had started the war
was no longer valid. But Khusrau Parvez continued the war and gave it the
color of a crusade between Zoroastrianism and Christianity. The sympathies of
the Christian sects which had been excommunicated by the Roman
ecclesiastical authority and tyrannized for years were with the Zoroastrian
invaders, and the Jews also joined hands with them; so much so that the
number of the Jews who enlisted in Khusrau's army rose to 26,000.
Roman Emperor Heraclius could not stop this storm. Iranians succeeded
in occupying Antioch followed by the fall of Damascus in 613 A.D. In 614
A.D. the Iranians occupying Jerusalem played havoc with the Christian world.
Ninety thousand Christians were massacred and the Holy Sepulcher was
desecrated. The Original Cross on which, according to the Christian belief,
Jesus had died was seized and carried to Mada'in. The chief priest Zacharia was
taken prisoner and all the important churches of the city were destroyed.
Khusrau Parvez very arrogantly wrote to Heraclius from Jerusalem "From
Khusrau, the greatest of all gods, the master of the whole world: To Heraclius,
his most wretched and most stupid servant: You say that you have trust in your
Lord. Why didn't then your Lord save Jerusalem from me?"
Within a year after this victory, the Iranian armies conquered Jordan,
Palestine, and the whole of the Sinai Peninsula, and reached the frontiers of
Egypt. Meanwhile, another conflict of a far greater historical consequence was
going on in Makkah. The believers in One God, under the leadership of the
Prophet Muhammad PBUH, were struggling for their existence against the
pagans under the command of the chiefs of the Quraish tribe. A substantial
number of the Muslims had to leave their homes and take refuge in the
Christian kingdom of Habash, which was an ally of the Byzantine Empire. In
those days the Sassanid victories against Byzantium were the talk of the town,
and the pagans of Makkah were delighted and were taunting the Muslims:
"Look the fire worshipers of Iran are winning victories and the Christian,
believers in revelation and prophethood are being routed everywhere. Likewise,
we, the idol worshipers of Arabia, will exterminate you and your religion."

Dr. Adeel Zeerak 20

These were the conditions when these verses of the Holy Quran were
revealed. These verses contained not one but two predictions. First, the
Romans shall be victorious; and second, the Muslims shall also win a victory at
the same time. There was not even a remote chance of the fulfillment of either
prediction in the next few years. On one hand, there were a handful of Muslims,
who were being beaten and tortured in Makkah, and even eight years after this
prediction there appeared no chance of their victory and domination. On the
other, the Romans were losing more and more ground every day. By 619 A.D.
the whole of Egypt had passed into Sassanid hands and the Magian armies had
reached as far as Tripoli. In Asia Minor, they beat and pushed back the Romans
to Bosporus, and in 617 A.D., they captured Chalcedon (modern, Kadikoy) just
opposite Constantinople. The emperor sent an envoy to Khusrau, begging that
he was ready to have peace on any terms, but he replied, "I shall not give
protection to the emperor until he is brought in chains before me and gives up
obedience to his crucified god and adopts submission to the fire god." At last,
the Roman emperor Hercules became so depressed by the defeat that he
decided to leave Constantinople and shift to Carthage (modern, Tunis).
In short, as the British historian Gibbon says, even seven to eight years
after this prediction of the Holy Quran, the conditions were such that no one
could even imagine that the Byzantine Empire would ever gain an upper hand
over Iran. Not to speak of gaining domination, no one could hope that the
Empire, under the circumstances, would even survive. However, ultimately the
Holy Quran’s prediction started to actualize with time and things started to
change in a positive direction.
In 622 A.D. as the Holy Prophet migrated to Madinah, the Emperor
Heraclius set off quietly for Trabzon from Constantinople via the Black Sea
and started preparations to attack Iran from the rear. Upon his request, Pope
Sergius lent him the Church collections on interest, in a bid to save Christianity
from Zoroastrianism. Heraclius started his counter-attack in 623 A.D. from
Armenia. Next year, in 624 A.D., he entered Azerbaijan and destroyed
Clorumia, the birthplace of Zoroaster, and ravaged the principal fire temple of
Iran. Great are the powers of Allah SWT, this was the same year the Muslims
achieved a decisive victory at Badr for the first time against the pagans of
Makkah. Thus, both the predictions made in these verses were fulfilled
simultaneously within the stipulated period of ten years.
The Byzantine forces continued to press the Iranians and in the decisive
battle at Nineveh (627 A.D.) they dealt them the hardest blow. They captured
the royal residence of Dastagerd and then pressing forward reached opposite
Ctesiphon, the capital of Iran. In 628 A.D. in an internal revolt, Khusrau Parvez
was imprisoned and 18 of his sons were executed in front of him. A few days
later he died in prison. This was the year when the peace treaty of Hudaibiya
was concluded by Prophet Muhammad PBHU, which the Quran has termed
Dr. Adeel Zeerak 21
as "the supreme victory". In the same year Khusrau's son, Qubad II, gave up
all the occupied Roman territories, restored the True Cross, and made peace
with Byzantium. In 628 A.D., the Emperor himself went to Jerusalem to install
the "Holy Cross" in its place, and in the same year the Holy Prophet entered
Makkah for the first time after the Hijrah to perform the `Umra-tul-Qada'.
After looking at these events, no one could even slightly doubt the true
prophecy of the Holy Quran. Consequently, most of the Arab polytheists
accepted Islam. 6 This was an amazing prophesy of the Holy Quran regarding
the victory of Romans and Muslims which was made at a time when no one
even remotely expected it. But the word of God came true and everything
happened as per the predictions made by the Holy Quran. Isn’t it amazing?
Such large-scale predictions came true including the fate of the two
superpowers of that time. Allah SWT is truly one Al-Mighty God, the possessor
of all knowledge and power.

Abu Lahab
Abu Lahab was the son of Abdul Muttalib and uncle of Prophet
Muhammad PBUH. His real name was 'Abd al-'Uzza, and he was called Abu
Lahab on account of his glowing, ruddy complexion. In Arabia, an uncle
represented the father especially when the nephew (Prophet Muhammad
PBUH) was an orphan. Despite this, he and his wife became the worst enemy
of Prophet Muhammad PBUH and Islam. Thus, a complete Surah (Lahab) with
the following verses of the Holy Quran was revealed about his fate:

“Perish the two hands of Abu Lahab, and perish he! Neither his wealth benefited him, nor
what he earned. He will soon enter a Fire, full of flames, and his wife as well, the wicked
carrier of firewood. Around her neck, there is (a collar of iron, like) a well-twisted rope.”
(Surah Lahab)
Surah Lahab is considered a miracle of the Holy Quran as it correctly
predicted the fate of Abu Lahab and his wife as enduring punishment in the
afterlife. This prophecy is said to have come true, as they both died as
disbelievers. At the time of the revelation of this Surah, many people of Makkah
were the worst enemies of Islam. Many of these enemies later became staunch
believers like Umer RAA, Khalid bin Waleed RAA, and Abu Sufyan RAA. Abu
Lahab could also have converted being the uncle of Prophet Muhammad

Dr. Adeel Zeerak 22

PBUH as his probability of accepting Islam was very high. Therefore, making
such a prediction about him in the early days of Makkah was extremely risky.
If Prophet Muhammad PBUH had fabricated the Holy Quran, Abu Lahab
could have easily converted to Islam to disprove the prophecy. But the author
of the Holy Quran is Allah SWT Who knew that this would never happen.
Thus, Surah Lahab is a sign of God showing the truth of Islam and the true
prophethood of Muhammad PBUH.

The preserved body of Pharoah

Firaun or Pharaoh (Ramesses II) is a very significant historical character
present at the time of Prophet Musa AS (Moses). He was a powerful tyrant and
one of the most evil men to have ever existed in human history. He was the
ruler of Egypt when Prophet Musa AS (Moses) was bestowed the
prophethood. He savagely opposed the prophet and his followers. Even the
most clear signs Prophet Musa AS was sent with, were not enough to alter his
belief in self-claimed divinity. The Holy Quran talks about him in detail in
various chapters. When talking about his end, Allah SWT tells us that although
he drowned along with his army, his body was preserved by Him (Allah SWT)
as a sign and lesson for generations to come. His mummy was discovered in
1881 and is considered to be one of the most well-preserved mummies ever
found. However, after nearly 100 years of its discovery, in 1976, the mummified
body of Ramesses II was suddenly required to be transported to France as it
was getting affected by some external fungus which needed immediate
treatment to avoid a complete decay.

Figure 36: Mummy of Pharoah (Ramesses II)

The French surgeon Dr. Maurice Bucaille was the scientist in charge of
the study on the mummy of Ramesses II. It was he who discovered the traces
of sea salt in the body of Ramesses II. It was commonly known that salt was a

Dr. Adeel Zeerak 23

major ingredient in the process of mummification but that was Natron salt
which is completely different from sea salt. Therefore, it was a very clear
indication that Ramesses II died by drowning in the sea but his body was soon
recovered and mummified after his demise. The question that came into Dr.
Bucaille’s mind was how could the body of Ramesses II remain so undamaged
compared to the other mummies although his body was recovered from the
sea. At that time he did not know about the following verses of the Holy Quran
discussing Pharoah’s death and preservation of his body:

“And We let the children of Israel cross the sea. So, Pharaoh and his troops chased them in
transgression and hostility, until when he was about to drown, he said, I believe that there is
no god but the One in whom the children of Israel believe, and I am among those who
submit to Allah. (Allah said,) Is it now (that you have come to believe) while you were
rebellious all along, and you were among the mischief-makers? So, today, We shall save
your body, so that you may become a sign for those after you. And many of the people are
heedless of Our signs.”
(Surah Yunus, Ayat 90 - 92)
These verses of the Holy Quran clearly state that the body of Pharaoh will
be saved and it will serve as a sign for people of the future. And this actually
happened. No one knew about the preserved body of Pharoah at the time of
revelation of the Holy Quran as the mummy was discovered many centuries
later in 1881. Islamic scholars before this discovery were not able to explain
these verses of the Holy Quran as no one knew the reality. But this happened
as per God’s will. And since the Holy Quran is the true word of God, this was
bound to happen.
Ultimately Dr. Maurice Bucaille was informed about these verses of the
Holy Quran. He was highly astonished that although this incident of Pharaoh’s
death was mentioned in the Bible and the Torah, nothing was mentioned about
Pharaoh’s body being recovered and preserved. Thus, these verses from the
Holy Quran in particular eventually made Dr Maurice Bucaille accept Islam.
He became Muslim after researching the verses of the Holy Quran and wrote
an entire book named “The Bible, The Quran and Science” in 1976.

HISTORICAL ACCURACY OF THE QURAN
The Holy Quran's historical accuracy is another testament to its
miraculous nature. While other religious texts may offer accounts of certain
events, the Holy Quran frequently provides a far more accurate narrative.
Despite a few occasions of initial skepticism from non-Muslims, the Holy
Quran's historical claims have consistently been verified through subsequent
research and discoveries. This section will examine specific instances where the
Holy Quran's historical accuracy surpasses that of other religious texts,
showcasing its unparalleled ability to convey historical truths with clarity and
precision.

Haman in the Holy Quran

A person by the name of Haman is mentioned in the Holy Quran. As per
the Holy Quran, he was the minister of Pharaoh. Haman is mentioned in the
Holy Quran about six times. The Holy Quran informs us about Haman whom
Pharaoh commanded to build a tower. On the other hand, Haman of the Bible
did not work for Pharaoh. As per the Bible, Haman worked for another king
named Xerxes in the Biblical Book of Esther. When the Biblical Catholic
scholars in the 1600s started researching orientalist studies (Islamic studies),
they were overjoyed to have apparently found a mistake in the Holy Quran.
They found Haman working for Pharoah in the Holy Quran while the book of
Esther mentions him working under King Xerxes, who lived a thousand years
after the Pharoah in Babylon, not even in Egypt. And he built for them a tower.
Many people must have heard of the story of the Tower of Babylon. So, the
Christian scholars challenged the historical Integrity of the Holy Quran.
They said, “Oh, Muhammad must have plagiarized it from a priest and
made a mistake, because he mixed up the story of the Tower of Babel and the
story of Xerxes with the story of the Pharaoh, and he’s confused between the
two of them, that’s what he did, misquotation in the Quran.” What really
interesting is that in the late 1800s, Catholic scholarship which is the body of
Catholic scholarship, unanimously denied the Book of Esther as a valid source
of History. They acknowledged that their own book unanimously is a “legend”
meaning it just consists of made-up stories. Even the Jewish encyclopedia now
says that the Book of Esther has no historical value none whatsoever. But this
does not end here.
The Holy Quran informs that this Quran tells Bani Israel about the things
that even they disagreed upon. Dr. Maurice Bucaille, who wrote the book “The
Bible the Quran and Science” was an expert in history as well. He wanted to
study Islamic history when he came across this problem presented by Catholic

Dr. Adeel Zeerak 25

priests. So, he did some research on it. In the late 1800s Egyptian hieroglyphics
were being revived as a language because hieroglyphics had died thousands of
years ago. It died as a language long ago even centuries before the time of
Prophet Muhammad PBUH. It was thus later revived by the German and
French Scholars in the twentieth century. The study of ancient Egyptian
civilization is called Egyptology. It encompasses a wide range of topics,
including history, archeology, language, literature, and art. The Egyptologists
traveled to Egypt studied the hieroglyphics and developed a scheme of spelling
those images and turning them into pronounceable words. This work was done
about 120 to 130 years ago. They got into this study and also made records
regarding the Egyptian ministers and their respective roles.
Dr. Maurice Bucaille traveled to France to meet an Egyptologist and asked
him to find the name of Haman in their records. He replied that he would not
be able to answer him and therefore Dr. Maurice would have to go to Germany
to learn about Haman. However, he asked Dr. Maurice how and when he came
across the name Haman. Dr. Maurice told him how the Holy Quran revealed
on Prophet Muhammad PBUH in the 7th Century informs about a minister of
Pharaoh by this name. He further revealed how Pharaoh had instructed Haman
to build a tower for him. According to the Holy Quran, “And Pharaoh said (to
his people,) O courtiers, I do not recognize any god for you other than me. So kindle for me,
O Haman, a fire on the clay (to bake bricks) and build for me a tower, so that I may look
on to the God of Musa. I deem him to be one of the liars.” (Surah Qasas, Ayat 38)
The Egyptologist said that it is impossible as nobody could have had
access to any names from that time because the language had already died long
before the time of Prophet Muhammad PBUH. Dr. Muarice traveled to
Germany to look up the names of different architects, constructors, and
ministers under Pharaoh. They looked specifically under the Pharaoh at the
time of Prophet Musa AS (Moses). He found Haman’s name there as the
minister of the stone queries and construction. This name was discovered in
the twentieth century, that is, centuries after Prophet Muhammad PBUH. So,
how is this information about Haman present in the Holy Quran? It is because
the Holy Quran is the word of the Almighty God, Allah SWT. 7

The Kings and Pharaohs of ancient Egypt

The kings of ancient Egypt during the time of Prophet Ibrahim AS
(Abraham), Prophet Yusof AS (Joseph), and Prophet Musa AS (Moses) are
constantly addressed with the title 'Pharaoh' in the Bible. Following are a few
examples of the use of this title from the Bible:
According to the book of Genesis, the king who was a contemporary of
Prophet Ibrahim AS (Abraham) was called Pharaoh, and this title is used six

Dr. Adeel Zeerak 26

times in Genesis 12:10-20. One example is: “But the Lord inflicted serious
diseases on Pharaoh and his household because of Abram's wife
Sarai.” (12:17)
According to the book of Genesis, the king who ruled Egypt in Prophet
Yusof’s AS (Joseph) time was also referred to as Pharaoh. The king is addressed
as Pharaoh ninety times. One example is: “So Pharaoh sent for Joseph, and he
was quickly brought from the dungeon. When he had shaved and changed his
clothes, he came before Pharaoh.” (41:14)
According to the book of Exodus, the king who ruled Egypt in Prophet
Musa’s AS (Moses) time was also referred to as Pharaoh. He is addressed as
Pharaoh 128 times. One example is: “When Pharaoh heard of this, he tried to
kill Moses, but Moses fled from Pharaoh and went to live in Midian...” (2:15)
Thus, the Bible uses the same title of “Pharoah” for the kings of ancient
Egypt during the time of Prophet Ibrahim AS (Abraham), Prophet Yusof AS
(Joseph), and Prophet Musa AS (Moses) suggesting a connection between these
kings. The Holy Quran, however, employs two distinct titles for the Egyptian
kings during the eras of Prophets Yusuf AS (Joseph) and Prophet Musa AS
(Moses), diverging from the Biblical narrative. This suggests that the Holy
Quran does not show a connection between these kings as asserted in the Bible.
The sovereign of Egypt who was a contemporary of Prophet Yusof AS
(Joseph) is named "Malik" (King) in the Holy Quran; whereas the sovereign of
Egypt who ruled during the time of Prophet Musa AS (Moses) is named him
“Fir`awn” (Pharaoh) in the Holy Quran.
For example, the following two verses of the Holy Quran used the term
“Malik” (King) while narrating the story of Prophet Yusof AS (Joseph) in
Chapter Joseph:

“And (one day) the king said (to his courtiers), I have seen (in a dream) seven fat cows
being eaten by seven lean ones, and seven ears of grain which are green and (seven) others
which are dry. O people, tell me about my dream, if you can interpret dreams.”
(Surah Yusof, Ayat 43)

Dr. Adeel Zeerak 27

“They said, we are missing the measuring-bowl of the king, and whoever brings it back
shall deserve a camel-load, and I stand surety for it.”
(Surah Yosuf, Ayat 72)
The following two verses of the Holy Quran used the term “Pharaoh”
while narrating the story of Prophet Musa AS (Moses):

“Musa said, O Pharaoh, I am a messenger from the Lord of all the worlds;”
(Surah Araf, Ayat 104)

“Then, after them, We sent Musa and Harun with Our signs to Pharaoh and his group,
but they showed arrogance. And they were surely a guilty people.”
(Surah Yunus, Ayat 75)
Thus, the Holy Quran distinguishes between the kings of ancient Egypt
during the times of Prophets Yusuf AS (Joseph) and Prophet Musa AS (Moses)
by employing two distinct terms. This differentiation is supported by modern
Egyptological research, which confirms that the title “Pharaoh” was not used
for the dynasty ruling during the time of Prophet Yusuf. The writers of the
Bible, on the other hand, used the singular term 'Pharaoh' for both kings,
seemingly overlooking this historical distinction. Thus, they have made a
serious mistake in narrating the History of ancient Egypt. This discrepancy
highlights the Holy Quran's accuracy and attention to historical detail. God
cannot make a mistake like the Biblical writers. This point is further elaborated
in a research paper with the title “Qur'anic Accuracy Vs. Biblical Error: The
Kings & Pharaohs Of Egypt”. The research paper is concluded with the
following sentences: 8
“According to modern linguist research the word ‘Pharaoh’ comes from
the Egyptian per-aa, meaning the ‘Great House’ and originally referred to the
palace rather than the king himself. The word was used by the writers of the
Old Testament and has since become a widely adopted title for all the kings of
Egypt. However, the Egyptians did not call their ruler ‘Pharaoh’ until the 18th
Dynasty (c. 1552 - 1295 BC) in the New Kingdom Period. In the language of
the hieroglyphs, ‘Pharaoh’ was first used to refer to the king during the reign
of Amenhophis IV (c. 1352 - 1338 BC). We know that such a designation was
correct in the time of Moses but the use of the word Pharaoh in the story of
Joseph is an anachronism, as under the rule of the Hyksos there was no

Dr. Adeel Zeerak 28

‘Pharaoh’. Similarly, the events related in Genesis 12 concerning Abraham (c.
2000-1700 BCE) could not have occurred in a time when the sovereign of
Egypt was called Pharaoh, and this exposes yet another anachronism. In several
chapters of Genesis, we find the same error frequently recurring – some ninety-
six times in total. What is clear is that the biblical writers composed their texts
under the influences of the knowledge of their time, when the king of Egypt
was usually designated as ‘Pharaoh’.”
“The Interpreter's Dictionary Of The Bible explains the reasons of such
discrepancies with modern knowledge: ‘The frank attitude toward the stories
about Egypt in Genesis and Exodus is that folk memory had retained the
essentials of great Hebrew experience but had later clothed that memory with
some details imperfectly recollected and some circumstantial details borrowed
from later times and conditions.’”
“The situation is entirely different in the Qur'an. As is the case with the
Bible, reference to the sovereign of ancient Egypt is found throughout various
chapters of the Qur'an. A careful study of the minutiae of each narrative reveals
some compelling differences. With regard to the Egyptian king who was a
contemporary of Joseph, the Qur'an uses the title ‘King’ (Arabic, Malik); he is
never once addressed as Pharaoh. As for the king who ruled during the time of
Moses, the Qur'an repeatedly calls him Pharaoh (Arabic, Fir'awn).”
“These facts that we have mentioned were unknown at the time of the
Qur'anic Revelation. The only source of knowledge of the religious past were
the Bible-based stories in circulation. From the time of the Old Testament to
the Qur'an, the only document mankind possessed on these ancient stories was
the Bible itself. Furthermore, the knowledge of the old Egyptian hieroglyphs
had been totally forgotten until they were finally deciphered in the 19th century
CE.”
“The historicity of the Pharaonic title provides yet another sharp reminder
to those that adhere to the precarious theory that parts of the Qur'an were
allegedly copied from the Bible. If Egyptian hieroglyphs were long dead and
the biblical account an inaccurate work of folk memory, then from where did
the Prophet Muhammad obtain his information? The Qur'an answers:
‘Your Companion is neither astray nor being misled. Nor does he say (aught) of (his
own) desire. It is no less than inspiration sent down to him. He was taught by one mighty in
Power.’ [Qur'an 53:2-5]
It is interesting to note that the meaning of the word ayah, usually
translated as 'verse' in the Qur'an, also means a sign and a proof. The reference
to Pharaoh and other facts concerning ancient Egypt in the Qur'an suggests a
special reflection.”

QURAN ANSWERED THE TEST
QUESTIONS
The Holy Quran correctly answered the test questions put forward to
Prophet Muhammad PBUH. These questions were often asked by skeptics and
disbelievers to test his prophethood. For example, Surah Kahaf answered the
following three questions which the pagans of Makkah, in consultation with
the people of the Book, had put to the Holy Prophet to test him:
1. Who were the Sleepers of the Cave?
2. What is the real story of Khidr?
3. What do you know about Zul-Qarnain (Cyrus the Great)? 9
These three questions and the stories involved concerned the history of
the Christians and the Jews, which were not known to Arabs of the Prophet’s
time. Therefore, a choice of these questions was made to test whether the Holy
Prophet PBUH possessed any source of knowledge of the hidden and unseen
things. Allah SWT, however, not only provided complete answers to their
questions but also employed the three stories to the disadvantage of the
opponents of Islam in the conflict that was going on at that time at Makkah
between Islam and unbelievers.
The questioners were told that "the Sleepers of the Cave" believed in the
same doctrine of Tauhid which was being put forward in the Holy Quran and
that their condition was similar to the condition of the persecuted Muslims of
Makkah. On the other hand, the persecutors of the Sleepers of the Cave had
behaved in the same way towards them as the disbelievers of the Quraish were
behaving towards the Muslims. Besides this, the Muslims were taught that even
if a believer is persecuted by a cruel society, he should not bow down before
falsehood but emigrate from the place all alone, if need be, with trust in God.
Incidentally, the disbelievers of Makkah were told that the story of the Sleepers
of the Cave was clear proof of the creed of the Hereafter, for this showed that
Allah SWT has the power to resurrect anyone He wills even after a long sleep
of death as He did in case of the Sleepers of the Cave.
The story of the “Sleepers of the Cave” has also been used by the Holy
Quran to warn the chiefs of Makkah who were persecuting the small newly
formed Muslim Community. Concurrently, Prophet Muhammad PBUH was
instructed never to compromise with the persecutors, however, influential and
powerful they’d be. The chiefs of Makkah were admonished not to be puffed
up with the transitory life of pleasure they were enjoying.
The story of Khidr and Prophet Musa AS (Moses) was related by the Holy
Quran to provide the answer to the question of the disbelievers and to give
Dr. Adeel Zeerak 30
comfort to the believers as well. The story teaches us to have complete faith in
the wisdom of God and to acknowledge our incompetence in completely
comprehending the circumstances and incidents around us. Something
appearing negative to us may benefit us in ways unknown to us and vice versa.
The same is true of the story of Zul-Qarnain (Cyrus) for it also
admonishes the questioners, as if to say, "O you vain chiefs of Makkah you
should learn a lesson from Zul-Qarnain. Though he was a great ruler, a great
conqueror, and the owner of great resources, he always surrendered to his
Creator, whereas you are rebelling against Him even though you are
insignificant chieftains in comparison with him.”
In short, the Holy Quran turned the tables on the questioners who had
tried to "expose" Prophet Muhammad PBUH by asking these difficult
questions unknown to the Arabs. The disbelievers did not expect the answers
to these questions from Prophet Muhammad PBUH. However, the Holy
Quran being the word of Allah SWT provided the correct answers again
authenticating that verily Allah SWT is All-Knowing and All-Powerful.

PRESERVATION OF THE QURAN

Yusuf Estes, originally named Joseph Estes, is an American Islamic
preacher. He converted to Islam in 1991. Before converting, he had a
background in business and Christian ministry. He tells the interesting story of
his conversion to Islam from a Christian preacher. Once before his conversion,
he had two visitors in his house. One was a Catholic priest and the other was a
Muslim named Mohammed. Yusuf wanted to convert the Catholic priest to his
protestant sect and also wanted to convert the Muslim visitor to Christianity.
Thus, as a Christian preacher, he wanted to kill two birds with the same stone.
But things did not go as he had planned. He explains what happened in the
following text:
“After settling in, we all began to gather around the kitchen table after
dinner every night to discuss religion. My father would bring his King James
Version of the Bible. I would bring out my Revised Standard Version of the
Bible, which says in it that King James Version has grave mistakes, grave errors,
and defects in it. My wife had another version of the Bible (maybe something
like Jimmy Swaggart's 'Good News For Modern Man’.) The priest, of course,
had the Catholic Bible which has 7 more books in it than the Protestant Bible.
So, we spent more time talking about which Bible was the right one or the most
correct one than we did trying to convince Mohammed (Muslim visitor) about
becoming a Christian.”

Dr. Adeel Zeerak 31

“At one point I recall asking him (Muslim) about the Quran and how
many versions of it there were in the last 1,400 years. He told me that there was
only one Quran. And that it had never been changed. Yet he let me know that
the Quran had been memorized by hundreds of thousands of people, in it's
entirety, and was scattered about the earth in many different countries. Over
the centuries since the Quran was revealed, millions have memorized it
completely and have taught it to others who have memorized it completely,
from cover to cover, letter perfect without mistakes. Today, over 9 million
Muslims have memorized the entire Quran from cover to cover. This did not
seem possible to me. After all, the original languages of the Bible have all been
dead languages for centuries and the documents themselves have been lost in
their originals for hundreds and thousands of years. So, how could it be that
something like this could be so easy to preserve and to recite from cover to
cover.” 10
Yusuf Estes was thus very impressed to know that the Holy Quran is
preserved so well and unlike the Bible has only one undisputed version.
Everyone has the same Quran without even the change of a dot. After some
more research, Yusuf Estes ultimately decided to become Muslim. He is now a
great preacher of Islam and a very nice person.
Special protection and preservation of the Holy Quran are also part of its
miraculous nature. It is a historical fact known to almost everyone that the
present-day Holy Quran is the same Holy Quran that was revealed to the last
prophet that is Prophet Muhammad PBUH. A special guarantee for protection
was provided by Allah SWT to His final message which is present in the form
of the Holy Quran. This is mentioned in the Holy Quran in the following verse:

“We have without doubt sent down the Message; and We will assuredly guard it (from
corruption)”
(Surah Al-Hijr, Ayat 9)
The meticulous historical record of the Holy Quran’s preservation,
including memorization and written transmission, is seen as evidence of this
divine promise. Today and throughout history, millions of people have learned
its Arabic text by heart. Exactly the same text without any change. In every era
since the revelation of the Holy Quran, numerous people have memorized the
entire Holy Quran. It is estimated that around 200 million people in the world
today have memorized the whole Quran. 11 Thus, it is impossible to change as
it is recorded word by word in the hearts of so many people including small
children. Therefore, no one can change its text even a single alphabet. This
reminds me of the distributed ledger of the modern blockchain technology that

makes a record immutable.

THE EMOTIONAL AND SPIRITUAL IMPACT

OF READING QURAN
The Holy Quran has a profound emotional and spiritual impact on those
who recite and contemplate it. This transformative power is seen as a sign of
its miraculous nature. Many people turn towards Islam after witnessing the
beauty of the Holy Quran. Many people are attracted by the scientific miracles
of the Holy Quran. Some people even feel that the verses of the Holy Quran
are talking to them. They feel Allah SWT is communicating with them through
the Quranic verses. I have watched many videos of the people who converted
to Islam after having such experiences from the verses of the Holy Quran.
Many people find satisfactory answers to their philosophical questions about
life by going through the Holy Quran. This became the reason for the
acceptance of Islam by many non-Muslims who converted to Islam. Even I
despite being a Muslim by birth had questions regarding life in this world before
I read the Quran. Ultimately, I found answers to those questions while reading
and understanding the Holy Quran.
Sometimes people become very emotional after reading the verses of the
Holy Quran as mentioned in the following verse: “When they hear what has been
sent down to the Messenger, you will see their eyes overflowing with tears because of the truth
they have recognized. They say, our Lord, we have come to believe. So, record us along with
those who bear witness.” (Surah Maidah, Ayats 83)
I am closing this chapter with the following verses of the Holy Quran:

“Say, if all the humans and jinns join together to produce anything like this Quran, they
will not (be able to) come up with anything like it, even if they assist one another. Indeed
We explained every subject in this Quran in various ways for the benefit of mankind. Still,
most of the people refused to do anything but reject.”
(Surah Bani Israel, Ayats 88 & 89)

Dr. Adeel Zeerak 33

“Had We sent down this Quran to a mountain, you would have seen it humbled, burst
apart out of awe for Allah. We cite such examples for people, so that they may ponder.”
(Surah Hashr, Ayat 21)
