Tutorial 5[Linear Regression and Analysis of Variances]
1. Age is related to the length of stay of surgical patients in a hospital. The following
sample data were obtained in a recent study.
Age (X) 40 36 30 27 24 22 20
Days in Hospital (Y ) 11 9 10 5 12 4 7
(a) Draw a scatter diagram and compute the coefficient of correlation
(b) Interpret the results.
2. Some one was interested to check if there was any relationship between a score for
particular test and a number of hours a student spent during preparation. To accomplish
this she decided to take a paired sample of observations for analysis and tabulated the
findings as follows:
Test Score 31 58 65 73 37 44 60 91 21 84
Hours Studied 4 9 10 14 4 7 12 22 1 17
(a) Obtain the line of best fit
(b) Compute both the coefficient of correlation and determination and comment on
the results
3. The sample data on the unemployment rate (X) and the crime rate (Y ) are as follows:
(X) 3 4 5
(Y ) 8 18 16
Calculate the regression equation and the standard error of estimate.

4. From the data given below, find the number of items n.
X X
r = 0.5, xy = 120, σy = 8, x2 = 90
where x and y are deviations from arithmetic mean i.e. x = X − X̄ and y = Y − Ȳ .
q P 2
Use the definition σy = n1 Y − Ȳ
5. A computer operator while calculating the coefficient of correlation between two vari-
ates x and y for 25 pairs of observations obtained the following constants:
n = 25, x = 125, x2 = 650, y = 100, y 2 = 460, xy = 508.
It was however later discovered at the time of checking he had copied down two pairs
as (6, 14) and (8, 6) while the correct pairs were (8, 12) and (6, 8). Find the correct
value of the correlation coefficient.
6. To compare the effectiveness of the three different types of phosphorous coatings of
airplane instrument dials, eight dials each are coated with the three types. Then the di-
als are illuminated by an ultraviolet light, and the following are the number of minutes
each glowed after the light source was shut off:
Type 1: 52.9 62.1 57.4 50.0 59.3 61.2 60.8 53.1
Type 2: 58.4 55.0 59.8 62.5 64.7 59.9 54.7 58.4
Type 3: 71.3 66.6 63.4 64.7 75.8 65.6 72.9 67.3
Test the null hypothesis that there is no difference in the effectiveness of the three
coatings at the 0.01 level of significance.
7. Given the measurement in 4 samples that follow. Can we conclude that they come
from the population having the same mean value? Use 0.05 level of significance.

8. Three samples of six guinea pigs each were injected, respectively, with 0.5 milligram,
1.0 milligram, and 1.5 milligram of a new tranquilizer, and the following are the num-
bers of minutes it took them to fall asleep:
0.5mg : 21 23 19 24 25 23
1.0mg : 19 21 20 18 22 20
1.5mg : 15 10 13 14 11 15
Test at 0.05 level of significance whether the null hypothesis that there is no difference
in effect caused by different dosage.
9. The following table gives the yield on 15 sample fields under three varieties of seeds
(viz A, B, C):
A B C
20 18 25
21 20 28
23 17 22
16 25 28
20 15 32
Test at 5% level of significance whether the average yields of land under different
varieties of seed show significance differences.
10. The following data represent the number of units of a product produced by three dif-
ferent workers using 3 different types of machines (A, B, C are machines)
W orkers A B C
X 8 32 20
Y 28 36 38
Z 6 28 38
Test (i) whether the mean productivity is the same for the different machine types, and
(ii) whether the three workers differ with respect to mean productivity.
