Guidelines
NOTE: If you are installing the inversion relay valve on an existing
installation, you must first remove the old valve. Refer to the valve
replacement procedure in this bulletin for instructions.
앫 For best timing results, mount the valve near the spring
brakes it will serve.
앫 Mount the valve with the exhaust port facing down within
30° of vertical.
앫 Use 8 mm mounting hardware to attach the valve to the
mounting surface. Tighten to 15 ± 2 lb-ft (20 ± 3 N폷m).

Under normal conditions, the IR-2 valve responds to signals from a dash-mounted parking brake control valve to control air flow to the spring brake chambers, facilitating brake application. In anticomponding conditions, if the service brakes are applied while spring brakes already are engaged, the valve delivers air to the spring brake chambers to release them .
In a primary air system failure, the IR-2 valve uses signals from the secondary system to exhaust air from the spring brake chambers, automatically applying the brakes. This redundancy ensures vehicle safety by stopping the vehicle safely even if one part of the brake system fails, reducing the risk of uncontrolled vehicle movement .
To test the anti-compounding feature, park the vehicle without applying parking brakes and block the tires. Install a test gauge in the delivery line or at the spring brake chamber. Charge the air brake system to 105-130 psi, apply the parking brakes, and observe if the IR-2 valve releases air from the spring brake chambers when service brake air is sent to spring brakes, confirming functionality .
If the IR-2 valve fails during a test, inspect the installation to verify correct air line routing and secure connections. Check for leaks and make appropriate repairs. If the issue persists, replacing the valve may be necessary. Persistent problems suggest potential installation or component faults and warrant further investigation .
If an IR-2 valve exhibits leakage exceeding 175 sccm or has an audible air leak, it should be replaced. Perform a leak test by applying a soap solution to pressurized connections and inspecting for bubbles, indicating a seal breach .
To replace an IR-2 valve, first block the vehicle tires. Identify, mark, and disconnect all air lines. Remove mounting hardware and the old valve. Install the replacement valve following bulletin guidelines, ensuring all lines are reinstalled as per their original configuration. Apply a minimum of 105-130 psi air system pressure and test the installation using specified function tests .
To prevent serious eye injury, always wear safe eye protection. Park the vehicle on a level surface and block the wheels to prevent movement. Use safety stands to support the vehicle instead of relying solely on jacks, as jacks can slip and fall over. Release all air from the air systems before removing any components to prevent injury from pressurized air. Do not attempt to open or disassemble the inversion relay valve due to the risk from internal spring forces .
The IR-2 valve combines relay valve and inversion valve functions with anti-compounding protection. A relay valve accelerates the application and release of air brakes, while the inversion valve manages brake pressure in emergencies, such as primary air system failures. The anti-compounding feature prevents simultaneous application of service and spring brakes, enhancing safety .
Place blocks under the tires. Install a test gauge in the delivery line or at the spring brake chamber. Charge the air brake system to 105-130 psi, then drain the primary reservoir. Make a service brake application by stepping on the foot valve, which exhausts air from the spring brakes. Verify the test gauge reads 0 psi when secondary service pressure exceeds 70 psi, indicating proper IR-2 valve function .
An improper mounting surface can affect the performance and reliability of the IR-2 valve. The surface must be flat within 0.010 inches to ensure proper alignment and functionality. Deviations can lead to physical stress on the valve, potentially causing misalignment and operational failures, impacting braking efficiency and safety .
