Chapter 1: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
The FMCG sector in India is among the most dynamic and competitive industries. With
increasing urbanization, disposable incomes, and changing consumer preferences,
companies are under constant pressure to innovate. Agro-FMCG products occupy a niche
within this sector, offering traditional food items that are deeply embedded in Indian
culture.
1.2 Company Overview – Mithai Agro-FMCG
Mithai Agro-FMCG is an emerging food and beverage brand, focusing on sweets, snacks, and
packaged food products. Its vision is to deliver authentic taste while ensuring quality and
hygiene. Despite its growing popularity, Mithai faces challenges related to retail reach,
competition from established FMCG brands, and evolving consumer expectations.
1.3 Need for the Study
Given the dynamic FMCG environment, Mithai Agro-FMCG must strengthen its retail
presence and brand penetration strategies to gain sustainable competitive advantage. The
project seeks to analyze the company’s current retail strategy and propose actionable
recommendations.
1.4 Objectives of the Study
- Retail Mapping and Distribution Analysis
- Brand Promotion Strategies
- Sales Order Generation and Process Optimization
- Rejection Handling and Customer Feedback Mechanism
- Competitor Analysis
- New Product Introduction Strategy
- Brand Management and Customer Engagement
1.5 Scope of the Study
This study is restricted to Bhubaneswar and nearby regions. It covers Mithai Agro-FMCG’s
retail presence, promotional activities, and competitor analysis. The results are expected to
help the company expand its retail penetration and improve brand recognition.
Chapter 2: Company Profile
Mithai Agro-FMCG is a rapidly growing brand in the Indian FMCG industry, offering a wide
range of sweets, snacks, and packaged foods. Its goal is to preserve the authentic taste of
Indian mithai while maintaining modern hygiene standards. The company is headquartered
in Odisha, with operations expanding across Eastern India.
Vision: To be a household name for authentic Indian sweets and snacks.
Mission: To combine tradition with quality.
Organizational Structure: Mithai Agro-FMCG follows a functional structure with divisions in
production, sales, marketing, and distribution.
The company’s product portfolio includes sweets, snacks, biscuits, packaged flour, and
ready-to-eat items.
Chapter 3: Literature Review
The literature review explores concepts of retail excellence, brand penetration, distribution
strategies, and consumer loyalty in FMCG.
- Retail excellence is defined as the ability to ensure maximum product availability,
visibility, and sales efficiency.
- Brand penetration refers to the depth of brand reach across markets and customer
segments.
- Previous studies highlight the importance of distribution networks, promotional
campaigns, and competitor benchmarking for FMCG success.
- Theories of consumer behavior suggest that taste, price, convenience, and emotional
connection play vital roles in FMCG purchase decisions.
Chapter 4: Research Methodology
The research followed a descriptive and exploratory design. Data was collected from both
primary and secondary sources.
- Primary Data: Retailer surveys, customer interviews, and discussions with sales
executives.
- Secondary Data: Company reports, FMCG industry reports, competitor websites.
Sample Size: 50 retailers in Bhubaneswar and nearby towns.
Tools: Questionnaires, SWOT analysis, competitor benchmarking.
Limitations: The study is geographically limited and based on available data within the
internship duration.
Chapter 5: Data Analysis & Interpretation
5.1 Retail Mapping and Distribution Analysis
Out of 50 surveyed retailers, 32 stocked Mithai products, while 18 did not. Reasons for non-
availability included lack of awareness and distribution gaps. Potential areas for expansion
were identified in peripheral towns.
5.2 Sales Order Process
Retailers reported delays in order processing and inconsistent supply. An order
management system with digital tools could streamline the process.
5.3 Brand Promotion Strategies
In-store promotions were limited to posters, with minimal use of digital campaigns.
Retailers suggested discount schemes and visibility through shelf placement.
5.4 Competitor Analysis
Key competitors include Haldiram’s, Bikaji, and regional sweet/snack brands. Competitors
excel in packaging, digital presence, and aggressive promotions. Mithai lags in this area.
5.5 Rejection & Feedback
Retailers reported occasional returns due to product shelf-life and packaging issues. A
formal feedback mechanism was absent.
Chapter 6: Findings
- Mithai products have moderate penetration but lack presence in premium retail outlets.
- Sales order system is outdated and causes inefficiencies.
- Promotions are traditional and limited in scope.
- Competitors are more aggressive in branding and digital promotions.
- Retailers and customers lack formal feedback channels.
Chapter 7: Suggestions & Recommendations
- Expand retail presence into untapped urban and semi-urban regions.
- Implement digital order management tools to streamline sales.
- Launch integrated promotional campaigns (social media, events, retail activations).
- Improve product packaging to match competitor standards.
- Establish a retailer-customer feedback system.
- Introduce new products such as sugar-free sweets and ready-to-eat mixes.
- Strengthen brand identity through consistent communication and customer loyalty
programs.
Chapter 8: Conclusion
The project highlights the need for Mithai Agro-FMCG to strengthen retail penetration,
modernize sales operations, and enhance brand visibility. Through strategic expansion,
innovative promotions, and customer engagement, Mithai can achieve competitive
advantage and sustainable growth in the FMCG sector.
