Dedication
To the enduring melancholy that refuses to die within
me and the sheer reluctance to bare my words to the
world. I now surrender.
Preface
his collection, Velvet Woes : Sighs of Solitude,
T
weave a tapestry of heart's quiet battles and
fleeting hopes. These unrhymed verses, written
in both Hindi & English, were born from
moments when words became my refuge—
scribbled in the hush of solitude, traversing the
shadowed terrains of nostalgia, reflection, hope
and resignation. Born amidst a flux of world
where languages shift like tides, I learned to
cradle my mother tongue while embracing the
other. This bilingual tapestry is no mere artifice;
it is the very embodiment of today's woman who
is a bridge between the roots they carry and the
paths they tread. As a first-time poet, I hesitated
to share these fragments, fearing they echoed
what had already been said. Yet, in their
unrhymed honesty, I discovered a voice that
yearns to echo beyond my own silence, carrying
truths that belong to me and perhaps, to you.
These poems are for every woman who has
stood in her own duality, embracing the beauty
of her chaotic thoughts, perplexed at the inner
workings of her mind. These are reflective of
shifts in spirit and mood as is evident with
varying texture of the poems. They are sighs, not
songs—intimate, honest and unbound by form. I
offer them now, not as answers, but as
companions, hoping they stir the same feelings
in you.
Acknowledgements
No poet writes alone and Velvet Woes : Sighs of
Solitude owes its breath to those who held space
for my trembling words. To my family, whose
quiet strength anchored me through storms of
doubt, I owe a gratitude deeper than verses can
hold. To my siblings, who believed my words
deserved the light of day and saw poetry in my
rawest thoughts, your faith shaped these pages.
To my friends, who listened to my sobs in the
darkest nights, your encouragement was the
light in my grey. To the women whose unspoken
woes echo in my own—your resilience inspired
me to surrender my reluctance and share this
work. And to every reader who opens these
poems, you carry my heart across the divide of
solitude. Your belief in my voice, in its duality
and truth, has made this collection more than a
whisper—it is now a shared sigh. Thank you.
1. The City of Tears
Where shadows dance beneath flickering lights,
and whispered secrets wane with the twilight.
Each echo a ghost of love I once held dear,
the cobblestones shudder under memories steeped in
fear.
Here, echoes mingle with the sighs of the night,
while the moon looks on, a sentinel of my plight.
The stars twinkle like distant promises unkept,
their brilliance a reminder of joys now swept.

As I trace the outlines of loss on my skin,

the ink of my sorrow spills where hope once had been.
Yet within the pulse of this sorrowful terrain,
a flicker of warmth ignites amid the pain.
For perhaps in the depths of this heartache I've sown,
a seed of resilience begins to be grown—
and one day, perhaps, in the light of the dawn,
the city of tears may transform and move on.

1
2. Echoes of the Wild
I am as much part of the rivers,
the fire, the mountains, the wind.
Ink of my letters dissolved in the waters of the wild
rivers,
surging from forest's heart.
Pages of my life burnt in the fire of immortality,
giving birth to raging desires.
Ashes of my story flown into the winds,
travelling to places yet unknown to me.
Echoes of my laughter and cries,
still heard in mountains.
Nature is in me as I am in nature,
integral and innate.

I dance with the shadows of ancient trees,

whisper secrets to the stones beneath,
each footprint a verse, each breath a song,
woven into the tapestry of timeless earth.
The sun sets my spirit aflame,
casting gilded dreams upon the horizon,
where stars speak in a language of light,
guiding lost souls home through the night.
I am the pulse of each rising tide,
the quiet promise in the falling rain,

2
forever bound in this sacred embrace,
a symphony of life, eternally sustained.

In the cradle of dawn, I awaken anew,

each ray a reminder of paths I once knew.
The rustle of leaves bears witness to my truth,
whilst the moon whispers tales of eternal youth.
With every heartbeat, the earth sings my name,
a melody forged in both joy and in pain.
I am the essence of memory and dream,
woven through fibers of time’s endless seam.
In unity, we dance, wild and free,
for I am the river, the fire, the mountain, the wind,
and nature is forever, unfurling within me.

3. Khurmani
In those hard lands of winds and desert,
where the heart struggles to beat.
Where every hill is frozen & every lake is still,
in such lands you grow, Khurmani.

You, the epitome of sacred beauty,

brave the morbid chill, the fatal waves.
You swing, you friendly soul,
to the tough and silent rocks.

The strange does not frighten you,

the cold does not curl your blood.
You do not bow in fear,
your humble branches, the genesis of life.

Amongst shadows where light seems to falter,

your resilience becomes a vibrant altar.
Each petal a whisper against the twilight gloom,
a testament that life can always resume.

With roots that delve deep into ancient tales,

you remind us, spirits can sail.
In the heart of the wasteland, your colors ignite,
a symphony of hope, a beacon of light.

4
You inspire souls, you get the blood flowing,
in the mirthless pits of darkness, you Khurmani, keep
glowing.
I look up to you, my strength,
I promise to myself, I shall blossom.

5
Wandering Prisoner
In the flamed wings of my longing,
you will not be caged
but you will stay
and rise above the fire.
You will sleep the soundest sleep
in my deepest agony
You will see the light
in my dim chaos
You will flow unabashed,
your red whirling water in my veins.
In the tapestry of our entwined souls,
you will be the thread of light,
the spark igniting the twilight,
flying higher, my heart’s flight.
Every heartbeat a promise,
every sigh a release,
as you rise in my yearning,
finding solace in this peace.
You will follow your wanderlust,
being the prisoner of my being.

5. Duality
I have known the shades of white, not colors but
fragments
layered, pieces of light that splinter.
I have known the shades of black,
not one darkness, but many,
folded into secrets we bury deep.

No single hue holds me-

no monolith of truth or sin.
Between the white and black,
I find grey,
the color of freedom,
the pulse of duality.

In grey, I stand naked,

my broken edges sharp,
my confessions wet with tears.
Here, Rumi's field blooms,
not green, but grey-
a vast, unjudged expanse
where right and wrong dissolve.
Away from light's piety,
beyond cruel weight of dark,
grey holds my bravest choices,

7
my trembling regrets,
my temptations' quite hum.

I am not one shade,

not bound to a single skin.
My soul rejects the lie of unity-
dual in thought, in flesh, in fire.
Look close- I am grey,
where all my hearts beat,
each love a different drum,
each truth a fragile, honest sigh.

A canvas of contradictions,
where joy and sorrow blend.
In this mercurial haze, I find my echo,
a symphony of whispers, cries and laughter,
woven through the threads of everyday life—
reminded always, that to be grey is to be alive.

8
6. Void
You without me
are but echoes of desire,
you without me
are the whispering breeze,
a page turned in haste,
a song without keys,
fading notes in the choir,
searching for harmony.

You, when I am gone,

might chase shadows,
as the dawn chases dusk,
with its faint blush,
tracing remnants of moments
that linger and fade,
but together with me
you spiral and sway,
a dance, both tender and wild,
you without me
are just smoke without fire.

20
14. Trance
Days dissolve into a shrouded haze,,
seasons turn, but the pain devours me.

Tears flood my heart, each drop a fear,

each sob screaming I’ve lost everything.

The calm I once clung to—

gone, shredded, a ghost I can’t find.

My heart races, wild,

palpitations carving holes in my chest,
anxiety a blade that won’t dull.

This is no dream—it’s a nightmare,

a black pit with no dawn, no mercy.

The night gapes, endless,

and I’m scared,
shivering in its cold,
begging for a light that’s dead.

21

23
16. Reminder
Fragments of memories paint the seams,
Whispers of who I was linger like fleeting beams.
Work on it. Be patient, the mirror's edge blurs,
As shadows dance softly, revealing the stir.

The light and the dark weave a tapestry grand,

A mosaic of moments, all part of my land.
So here I will stand, in the duality's glow,
Embracing the spectrum, the seeds that I sow.

In this intricate dance, both the vibrant and grey,

Each note of my past finds its voice in the fray.
In the silence, I ponder, in the chaos, I find,
The beauty of being—complex and entwined.

With every heartbeat echoing wisdom bestowed,

I walk the fine line where the two stories flowed.
In the prism of self, where reflections collide,
I gather my fragments, let the journey decide.

24

26
18. Sacred Sequence
You should know the touch first,
a whisper of skin,
soft as a sigh against the quiet.

Then the fragrance,

a breath of warmth,
blooming where shadows linger.

The taste follows,

slow, like secrets
unraveled on the tongue.

Then the heat,

a pulse awakening,
fire beneath the surface.

The rhythm rises,

a dance of hearts,
unsteady, yet sure.

Surrender comes,
not a fall, but a leap,
into the vast unknown.

27
Then the claim,
a vow unspoken,
binding soul to soul.

Oneness unfolds,
two tides merging,
no edge, no end.

And before all else,

before the world resumes,
there is the calm—
a stillness where we rest,
whole,
at last.

28
19. Entreat
Write,
though every tale seems spun,
every ache already named.

Write,
when the world whispers all is said,
when your heart fears its truths are old.

Your words are yours alone—

no soul has shaped them as you do,
no hand has carved your sentences,
your stories, your silent cries.

They are the pulse of your being,

as distinct as the way you breathe,
the way you love,
the way you break.

Do not lay your pen down,

thinking the world has heard enough.
No melody is final—
new songs still stir the air.

So write.

29
Spill the feelings you think are worn,
the secrets no one has dared to trace.

Write the joy that trembles,

the sorrow that claws,
the quiet that holds you still.

Write,
for your voice is a fire,
unmatched,
unclaimed,
forever yours.

30
