Hydraulics Study Guide

Introduction to Hydraulics
Hydraulics is a branch of science and engineering that deals with the mechanical properties of
liquids. It is widely applied in civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering for machines, fluid
transport, and power transmission.

Basic Principles
Pascal’s Law: Pressure applied to a confined fluid is transmitted equally in all directions.
Bernoulli’s Equation: The total energy in a fluid system remains constant: P/γ + v²/2g + z =
constant.
Continuity Equation: For incompressible fluids, A■v■ = A■v■.

Hydraulic Devices & Components

1. Hydraulic Pump – Converts mechanical power into fluid power.
2. Hydraulic Press – Uses Pascal’s law to multiply force.
3. Turbines – Convert fluid energy into mechanical energy.
4. Actuators & Cylinders – Convert hydraulic energy into motion.
5. Valves – Control flow and pressure in hydraulic systems.

Applications
• Heavy machinery (excavators, cranes, loaders)
• Power systems (hydroelectric plants)
• Automotive brakes and steering systems
• Industrial automation and robotics

Formulas & Equations

• Pascal’s Law: P = F/A
• Continuity: A■v■ = A■v■
• Bernoulli’s: P/γ + v²/2g + z = constant
• Hydraulic Power: P = Q × ∆p
• Efficiency: η = (P_out / P_in) × 100%

Sample Problems
Problem 1: A hydraulic press has a small piston area of 0.01 m² and a large piston area of 0.5 m².
If a force of 200 N is applied on the small piston, find the force on the large piston.

Solution:
P = F/A = 200 / 0.01 = 20,000 Pa
Force on large piston = P × A = 20,000 × 0.5 = 10,000 N
Answer: 10,000 N
Problem 2: Water flows through a pipe with diameters 0.2 m and 0.1 m at sections 1 and 2. If
velocity at section 1 is 2 m/s, find velocity at section 2.

Using Continuity Equation: A■v■ = A■v■

A■ = π(0.2²)/4 = 0.0314 m², A■ = π(0.1²)/4 = 0.00785 m²
v■ = (A■v■)/A■ = (0.0314 × 2)/0.00785 = 8 m/s
Answer: 8 m/s

Summary/Review
Hydraulics applies fluid mechanics principles for power transmission and motion control. Key laws
include Pascal’s Law, Bernoulli’s Equation, and the Continuity Equation. Hydraulic machines like
pumps, presses, and turbines are used in industries, civil projects, and transportation systems.
