NUMBER SERIES
This chapter consists of questions in which series of numbers or alphabetical letters or combinations of both are given,
which are generally called the terms of the series. These terms follow a certain pattern throughout the series. The
candidate is required to study the given series, identify the pattern followed in the series and either complete the given
series with the most suitable alternative or find the wrong term in the series.
Solved examples
Direction : In each of the following questions, various terms of a number series are given with one term missing as shown
by [ ? ]. Choose the missing term out of the given alternatives.
Ex.1 1, 6, 15,?, 45, 66, 91
(1) 25 (2) 26 (3) 27 (4) 28
Sol. Clearly, the given sequence follows the pattern : + 5, + 9, + 13, + 17, + 21, + 25, .....
Thus, 1 + 5 = 6, 6 + 9 = 15, .....
So, missing term = 15 + 13 = 28. Hence, the answer is (4).
Ex.2 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, ?, 256
(1) 128 (2) 98 (3) 86 (4) 106
Sol. The numbers are multiplied by 2 to get the next number : 64 × 2 = 128.
Hence the answer is (1)
Ex.3 2, 5, 9, 19, 37,?
(1) 73 (2) 75 (3) 76 (4) 78
Sol. Clearly, we have: 2 × 2 + 1 = 5, 5 × 2 – 1 = 9, 9 × 2 + 1 = 19, 19 × 2 – 1 = 37, .....
So, missing term = 37 × 2 + 1 = 75.
Hence, the answer is (2).
Ex.4 17, 26, 37, 50, 65, ?, 101
(1) 82 (2) 75 (3) 78 (4) 90
Sol. The series is 42 + 1, 52 + 1, 62 + 1, 72 + 1, 82 + 1.
The next number is 92 + 1 = 82
Hence the answer is (1)
Ex.5 4, 6, 12, 14, 28, 30,?
(1) 32 (2) 60 (3) 62 (4) 64
Sol. The given sequence is a combination of two series:
(I) 4, 12, 28,? and (II) 6, 14, 30, .....
Now, the pattern followed in each of the above two series is : + 8, + 16, + 32, .....
So, missing number = (28 + 32) = 60.
Hence, the answer is (2).

Verbal Series (Class-10)

ALPHABET SERIES
In this type of questions, a series of single, pairs or groups of letters or combinations of letters and numerals is given. The
terms of the series form a certain pattern as regards the position of the letters in the English alphabet. The candidate is
required to decipher this pattern and accordingly find the missing term or the wrong term in the given series.
Solved Examples
Direction : In each of the following questions, various terms of a letter series are given with one term missing as shown by
[ ? ]. Choose the missing term out of the given alternatives.
Ex.6 Find the next two terms in the series: A, C, F, J,?,?
(1) L, P (2) M,O (3) O, U (4) R, V
Sol. Clearly, the first, second, third, ..... letters of the series are respectively moved two, three, four, ..... steps forward to
obtain the successive terms of the series.
Thus, the fifth term in the series must be a letter which is five steps ahead of J i.e. O, while the sixth term must be a letter
six steps ahead of O i.e. U.
Thus, we have the following pattern :

So, the missing terms are O and U. Hence, the answer is (3).
Ex.7 EZ, DX, CV, ?, AR, ZP
(1) CS (2) AM (3) BT (4) TG
Sol. First and second letters follow a sequence of – 1 and – 2 respectively.
Hence the answer is (3)
Ex.8 Which term comes next in the sequence: AC, FH, KM, PR,?
(1) UW (2) VW (3) UX (4) TV
Sol. Clearly, the first and second letters of each term are moved five steps forward to obtain the corresponding letters of the
next term.
Thus, the first letter of the missing term must be five steps ahead of P i.e. U, while the second letter must be five steps
ahead of R i.e. W.
So, the missing term is UW. Hence, the answer is (1).
Ex.9 Find the next term in the series : BMO, EOQ, HQS,?
(1) KSU (2) LMN (3) SOV (4) SOW
Sol. Clearly, we observe the following pattern :

The first letters follow the pattern + 3 i.e. B E H K

The second letters follow the pattern + 2 i.e. M O Q S

The third letters follow the pattern + 2 i.e. O Q S U

Thus, the missing term is KSU. Hence, the answer is (1).

ALPHA - NUMERIC SERIES


This type of questions is just a jumbled form of questions of Number and Alphabet series, which you have just read. Here,
the terms of the given series are a combination of letters and numerals, which move according to a set pattern.

Direction : In each of the following questions, various terms of an alpha-numerical series are given with one or more
terms missing as shown by (?). Choose the missing terms out of the given alternatives.

Ex.10 Find the next term in the alpha-numeric series :

(1) N2676S (2) N2676T (3) T2670N (4) T2676N
Sol. Clearly, the patterns followed by the letters are as follows:

1st letter : Z –2 X –2 V –2 T –2 R –2 P –2

The series formed by the numerals i.e. 1,2,6,21,88,445, ..... follows the pattern × 1 + 1, × 2 + 2, × 3 + 3, × 4 + 4, × 5
+ 5, .....
So, numeral in the desired term = 445 × 6 + 6 = 2676.
Hence, desired term is N2676S.
Hence, the answer is (1).
Ex.11 W-144 , U-121, S-100, Q-81,?
(1) P-64 (2) O-64 (3) P-49 (4) O-49
Sol. First letter- decreases by 2 each time
Second numeral- square of 12,11,10,9,8..
So the missing term is O -64.
Hence the answer is (2).
CONTINUOUS PATTERN
This type of questions usually consists of a series of small letters which follow a certain pattern. However, some letters are
missing from the series. These missing letters are then given in a proper sequence as one of the alternatives. The
candidate is required to choose this alternative as the answer.
Solved Examples
Direction : In each of the following letter series, some of the letters are missing which are given in that order as one the
alternatives below it . Choose the correct alternatives.
Ex.12 ab_ _ baa_ _ ab_
(1) aaaaa (2) aabaa (3) caabab (4) baabb
Sol. Here series aba is repeated. Hence the answer is (2).
Ex.13 ab_aa_bbb_aaa_bbba
(1) abba (2) baab (3) aabb (4) abab
Sol. The series is abb / aaabbb / aaaabbbb / a. Thus the letter are repeated twice, then thrice , then four times and so on.
Hence the answer is (2).
Ex.14 _bc_ca_aba_c_ca
(1) abcbb (2) bbbcc (3) bacba (4)abbcc
Sol. The series is abc / bca / cab / abc / bca. Thus the letters changes in cyclic order. Hence the answer is (1).
