Lesson
01 Preliminary Parts
In the previous module, you learned that research is systematic and cyclical.
This means that you need to follow a step-by-step process to successfully conduct
a research study.
In this lesson, you will learn more about research. Included in the lesson is
the discussion on the preliminary parts of a research paper.
What’s In
Let’s revisit what you have learned from the previous module.
Research is a multi-step and cyclic process
Identification of a research topic is facilitated by reading previous work on a
related subject.
The tentative solution to the identified research problem can be obtained by
proposing a hypothesis prior to the actual experimentation.
The research methodology used to solve a research problem is guided by the
hypothesis.
During an actual experimentation, the observation or data collected can be
processed and analyzed to attain the objectives of the research.
A conclusion can be stated to summarize the major findings of the research
and state their importance and future application.
Notes to the Teacher
This contains helpful tips or strategies that will help you in
guiding the learners.

1.2 The usual length of a research title is 10 to 12 words.
1.3 The contents of the title page (particularly a, b, d and f) are typed in
uppercase and lowercase and centered on the page as shown below.
Following are examples of research titles:
1. Biofuel from Castor Bean Plant (Ricinus communis)
2. Trichoderma viride as a Biofungicide for the Control of Postharvest
Banana Anthracnose

In constructing a research title, use the following guide questions:
Does the title state briefly what was studied?
Are the variables investigated in the study clearly identified?
2. ABSTRACT
The abstract is a concise summary of the project. It gives the readers a
general idea of the contents of the research report which briefly states the
problem, the methodology used, and the findings and conclusions.
2.1 The abstract contains the following:
A short description of the background and purpose
A statement of the conceptual framework and hypothesis (es)
The main results and conclusions
2.2 The abstract can be one or more paragraphs, generally not more than 250
words.
2.3 In describing the completed research, the researcher uses the past tense and
third person. But in stating the findings of the research, in citing existing
facts, and in describing what is in the report, the researcher uses the
present tense.
Sample of an abstract:
SRIGR: Search and Rescue Interoperable Ground Robot
The complex and dangerous environment after the disaster can cause
serious danger to the life safety of rescue workers. Rescue robot can perform
many tasks instead of rescue workers, such as environmental monitoring and
personnel search, and it can improve the rescue efficiency and information
accuracy. So the rescue robot has broad application prospect. Because the post
disaster environment is very complex, the adaptability of complex environment
is the basic function of the rescue robot. The SRIGR works with human
operators and rescue responders in rescue missions occurred under some
special situations, such as, collapsed building from earthquake. This study
aims to create a robot that save lives and provide certainty in unknown
environments.
Testing of the device was done to determine the functioning time of the
robot as well as the reaction time of its sensor. The researcher found out that
functioning time of the SRIGR as regards to terrain surfaces are as follows
Plain: 53.4 minutes, Rough:43.4 minutes, Inclined: 29.2 minutes. Moreover,
the reaction time of the alarm within the 1, 5, and 10 meters distance range are
0.1380s, 0.4460s, 0.7080s respectively, Furthermore, there is significant
difference on the functioning time when grouped according to terrain surfaces
and the reaction time of the alarm when grouped according to distances.

and determine its major components by answering the guide questions in Part B.
A. Presentation of Abstract
SOLAR-POWERED SMALL SCALE AQUAPONICS SYSTEM DESIGN FOR
TILAPIA (Oreochromisniloticus) AND PECHAY (Brassica rapa) CULTIVATION
(Abstract)
Aquaponics is a combination of hydroponics and aquaculture, were
recirculation of water from the aquaculture system provides nutrients for the
growth of plants. The project entitled“Solar-powered Small Scale Aquaponics
System Design for Tilapia (Oreochromisniloticus) and Pechay(Brassica rapa)
Cultivation” was conducted to provide an alternative way for cultivation of
plants and fishes especially in urban areas. The project aims to produce
quality plants without the use of synthetic fertilizers and to reduce the space
and land use. It also aims to create an aquaculture system that will be used
for fish growth and production.
The researchers compared the growth of the plants and the fishes
between the Aquaponics system and the traditional way of planting and
growing fish. It was shown in the results that there is a significant difference
between the two set-ups in terms of the growth of plants, the color of the
leaves and the number of the leaves of the aquaponics system and the
traditionally grown plants. Comparison between the growth of the fishes was
also done. Results show that there is no significant difference between the
growth of the fishes in the aquaponics system and the traditional
aquaculture.
Based on the results, the researchers concluded that the aquaponics
system design is able to support the needs of the plants without the
presence of soil and at the same time it is also capable of sustaining the
requirements needed by the fish.
