Exercises of practical life also called EPL are those simple daily actions which
are performed by adults in the environment. These actions are totally real and
are actually performed in real situations.
The exercises of practical life are further divided into four groups
 Elementary Exercises
 Exercise of Personal Care
 Grace and Courtesy Exercises
 Care of Environment Exercises

1. Elementary Exercises
The elementary exercises are further divided into three categories;
i. Basic Elementary Exercises
The basic elementary exercises involve very basic movements. It
mostly includes learning how to hold and place an object. All such
activities are completed in a very short period of time. It includes
for example; how to hold a jug, glass, pen, spoon etc.

ii. Elementary Exercises

All the movements which are included or involved in this group a
bit more complex, difficult, and advanced as compared to basic
elementary exercises. But nonetheless they can also be completed
within a short period of time. The examples for this period are;
folding and unfolding mats, opening and closing bottle caps etc.

iii. Higher Elementary Exercises

These exercises are more logical as compared to basic and
elementary exercises. But it requires the same work, just a bit
more complex than the other two groups of exercises. The

self-control to care of environment. These exercises help the children in their
whole upcoming life. After learning all these exercises, the children become

The gradual increase in task complexity helps maintain engagement, encourages continuous learning, and reduces the likelihood of frustration and failure, promoting a positive and reinforcing educational experience .

The different groups of Exercises of Practical Life (EPL) contribute to a child’s overall development by fostering coordination, confidence, and independence.
