• Data transfer rate: Amount of data that is moved from one storage
device to another in a given time
• Date access time: Time taken to locate specific data stored on the
storage media
• Disk sector: A sector is a subdivision of a track on a magnetic or optical
disk.
• Latency: Time taken for a specific block of data on a data track to
rotate around to the read/write head
• Platter: The circular disk on which magnetic data is stored in a hard
disk drive.
About platters Theory/Page 23/[Link]. 1 b.

b i)
Platters are made from glass, ceramic or aluminium which are coated in
iron oxide.
b ii)
Role of actuators:
• Actuators are used to move the read/write head
Blu-ray VS DVDs Theory/Page 24/[Link]: 3

• A blue laser rather than red laser is used to carry out Blu-ray
read and write operations.
• Blu-ray can store up to five times more data than normal DVD.
• Blu-ray disks automatically come with a secure encryption
system which helps to prevent piracy and copyright violations.
• The data transfer rate of Blu-ray discs are higher than DVDs.
Advantages of SSD Theory/Page 24/[Link]: 4

• More reliable as there is no moving parts.

• Lighter than HDD so it is more suitable for laptops
• They have a lower power consumption
• Faster access time than HDD
• Faster data transfer speed than HDD
Devices that could use solid state storage
Theory/Page 24/[Link]: 4b
• Name 1: Smartphones
Reason: They are more reliable and are very light
• Name 2: Tablet
Reason 2: They are thin and have lower power consumption
