Class 12 Biology: Human Reproduction Notes

The document provides an overview of human reproduction, detailing the male and female reproductive systems, gametogenesis, the menstrual cycle, fertilization, pregnancy, and embryonic development. Key hormones involved in these processes are also highlighted, including FSH, LH, estrogen, progesterone, hCG, oxytocin, and prolactin. Class 12 Biology - Human Reproduction: Short Notes

Class 12 Biology Human Reproduction (Short Notes)

1. Male Reproductive System:

- Includes: Pair of testes (in scrotum), accessory ducts (vas deferens, epididymis, ejaculatory duct,

urethra), glands (seminal vesicles, prostate, bulbourethral), penis.

- Testes produce sperms and testosterone.

- Sperms mature in epididymis and are transported through vas deferens.

2. Female Reproductive System:

- Includes: Ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, cervix, vagina.

- Ovaries produce ova and hormones (estrogen, progesterone).

- Fertilization occurs in the ampullary-isthmic junction of fallopian tube.

3. Gametogenesis:

- Spermatogenesis: Formation of sperms from spermatogonia. Occurs in seminiferous tubules.

Regulated by FSH, LH, testosterone.

- Oogenesis: Formation of ova. Begins before birth, completes upon fertilization. Occurs in ovaries.

4. Menstrual Cycle:

- Average 28-day cycle in females.

- Phases: Menstrual phase (1-5), Follicular/proliferative (614), Ovulation (~day 14), Luteal/secretory

phase (1528).

- Regulated by FSH, LH, estrogen, and progesterone.

5. Fertilization and Implantation:

- Fertilization is the fusion of sperm and ovum.

- Occurs in fallopian tube.

- Zygote undergoes cleavage morula blastocyst.

- Blastocyst implants in endometrium (~6-7 days post-fertilization).

6. Pregnancy and Placenta:

- Placenta is an organ that connects fetus and mother.

- Functions: Exchange of nutrients/gases, hormone secretion (hCG, hPL, estrogen, progesterone,

relaxin).

7. Embryonic Development:

- Zygote Morula Blastocyst Embryo.

- Differentiation of germ layers (ectoderm, mesoderm, endoderm).

8. Parturition and Lactation:

- Parturition = process of childbirth, induced by oxytocin.

- Lactation = milk production by mammary glands, controlled by prolactin (milk synthesis) and

oxytocin (milk ejection).

Key Hormones:

- FSH & LH: Regulate gametogenesis.

- Estrogen & Progesterone: Regulate menstrual cycle, pregnancy.

- hCG: Maintains corpus luteum during early pregnancy.

- Oxytocin: Induces labor contractions and milk ejection.

- Prolactin: Stimulates milk production.

Important Terms:
- Acrosome: Cap on sperm head, contains enzymes.

- Zona Pellucida: Layer around ovum preventing polyspermy.

- Corpus Luteum: Formed from follicle post-ovulation; secretes progesterone.
