IELTS LISTENING PRACTICE – MAP

AUDIO SCRIPT

Exercise 1:
OK everyone. So here we are at the entrance to the town library. My name is
Ann, and I'm the chief librarian here, and you'll usually find me at the desk
just by the main entrance here. So I'd like to tell you a bit about the way the
library is organised, and what you'll find where … and you should all have a
plan in front of you. Well, as you see my desk is just on your right as you go
in, and opposite this the first room on your left has an excellent collection of
reference books and is also a place where people can read or study
peacefully. Just beyond the librarian's desk on the right is a room where we
have up to date periodicals such as newspapers and magazines and this
room also has a photocopier in case you want to copy any of the articles. If
you carry straight on you'll come into a large room and this is the main
library area. There is fiction in the shelves on the left, and non-fiction
materials on your right, and on the shelves on the far wall there is an
excellent collection of books relating to local history. We're hoping to add a
section on local tourist attractions too, later in the year. Through the far door
in the library just past the fiction shelves is a seminar room, and that can be
booked for meetings or talks, and next door to that is the children's library,
which has a good collection of stories and picture books for the under
elevens. Then there's a large room to the right of the library area – that's the
multimedia collection, where you can borrow videos and DVDs and so on,
and we also have CD-Roms you can borrow to use on your computer at
home. It was originally the art collection but that's been moved to another
building. And that's about it – oh, there's also the Library Office, on the left of
the librarian's desk. OK, now does anyone have any questions?

Exercise 2:
Hello there. My name's Matt and I'm going to be your guide for the day.
Before your guided tour of the stadium begins, you have 15 minutes to look
around the small museum we put together about the history of the club.

Now, you've got a map of the museum on your leaflet. So, let me just tell you
where to find some of the most interesting displays.

Firstly, I'm sure you'll want to see all the medals and cups that the club has
won over the years. These are on the second floor in the first big room you
come to after you've gone up the stairs. You have to walk through this room
on your way to the exit, but make sure you leave yourself enough time to
have a good look round. If you're interested in seeing a history of the club in
old photos. Going right back to the 1880s, then you'll find that display on the
first floor. It's in the first room you come to on your right as you walk down
the main corridor from the entrance. You can also see the type of kit the
team members used to play in at various times in its history and a display in
the next room on the same side of the corridor on the first floor. It's amazing
how much fashions in shorts and shirts changed over the years, and the
display bring us right up to date. This room is really popular with visitors.

Another display that I'd recommend is the one devoted to the history of the
stadium itself and how it's developed over the years. There's an interesting
interactive display where you can press a button and see how the place
looked at different times in its history.

That's in the middle room on the second floor. If you want to see how the
club's advertising has developed over the years, then there's an interesting
display of posters at the end of the corridor on the first floor, just before you
go up the stairs.

Finally, you can watch some of the finest moments in the club's history in the
last room on the left-hand side of the corrido on the first floor. You can see
old newsreels of some of the best goals and saves and see some of the most
iconic players of the last 50 years in action.

Exercise 3:
Now, a word about the layout of the building. The auditorium, stage and
dressing rooms for the actors are all below ground level. Here on the ground
floor we have most of the rooms that the public doesn’t see. The majority are
internal, so they have windows in the roof to light them.

Standing here in the foyer, you’re probably wondering why the box office
isn’t here, where the public would expect to find it. Well, you might have
noticed it on your way in – although it’s part of this building, it’s next door
with a separate entrance from the road. (Q17)

For the theatre manager’s office, you go across the foyer and through the
double doors, turn right, and it’s the room at the end of the corridor, with the
door on the left. (Q18)

The lighting box is where the computerised stage lighting is operated and it’s
at the back of the building. When you’re through the double doors turn left,
turn right at the water cooler, and right again at the end. It’s the second
room along that corridor (Q19). The lighting box has a window into the
auditorium, which of course is below us.

The artistic director’s office is through the double doors, turn right and it’s
the first room you come to on the right-hand side (Q20). And finally, for the
moment, the room where I’ll take you next – the relaxation room. So if you’d
like to come with me …
Exercise 4:
Okay, Group B, your turn. Does everyone have a copy of the plan? Oh, great.
Okay, we’ll all be meeting in the car park that’s on the bottom of the plan
see. Now, if you’ve been assigned to the vegetable beds to get there, you go
out of the car park and go up the footpath until you reach the circle of trees.
There they are in the middle of the plan, and you see that the footpath goes
all the way around them. Well, on the left hand side of that circular footpath,
there’s a short track which takes you directly to the vegetable beds. You
could see a bamboo fence mark just above them. All right. Okay. If you’re
helping out with the beehives, pay attention. Look again at the circle of trees
in the middle of the plan and the footpath that goes around them. On the
right side of that circle you can see that the footpath goes off in an easterly
direction, heading towards the right hand side of the plan. And then the
party splits into two and you can either go up or down. You want the path
that heads down, and at the end of this, you see two areas divided by a
bamboo fence. And as we’re looking at the plan, the beehives are on the
right of the fence. The smaller section, I mean, now, don’t worry. All these
have been removed. You just need to transport the hives back to the car
park. Okay for this eating, look at the circular footpath at the top of it.
There’s a path that goes from there on takes you up to the seating area
alongside the bicycle track. And, with a good view of the island, has suppose.
Okay, if you’re volunteering for the adventure playground area, let’s start
from the car park again and go up the footpath but then you want the first
left hand. Go out there and then you see, there’s a short part that goes off to
the right. Go down there. And that’s the adventure playground area above
the bamboo fence. That fence does need repairing, I’m afraid. Right. What
else? Oh, yes, the sand area. We’ve got that circular footpath in the middle.
Find the track that goes east towards the right hand side of the plan. On
where that track divides, you need the little path that goes up towards the
bicycle track. The sand area is just above the bamboo fence there. And
finally the pond area. So it’s on the left hand side of your plan towards the
top, just above the fruit bushes, and to the left of the little path. Okay. As I
said already, hopefully will be.
