DC Machines - Question 3 Solutions

Question 3 Solutions

(a) Draw a 4-pole DC machine and briefly explain its essential parts:

Essential Parts of a DC Machine:

1. Yoke - Provides mechanical protection and acts as a magnetic path.

2. Poles and Pole Shoes - Carry the field winding and spread magnetic flux.

3. Field Windings - Excite the poles to create the magnetic field.

4. Armature Core - Laminated steel core housing the armature winding.

5. Armature Winding - Converts energy between electrical and mechanical.

6. Commutator - Converts alternating EMF to DC.

7. Brushes - Transfer current from/to the rotating armature.

(b) (i) Four Types of Self-Excited DC Generators:

1. Shunt Generator - Field winding parallel to armature.

2. Series Generator - Field winding in series with armature.

3. Compound Generator - Combination of series and shunt field windings.

a. Short Shunt - Shunt field across armature only.

b. Long Shunt - Shunt field across both armature and series field.

4. Differential Compound - Series field opposes shunt field.

(ii) Major Difference:

- Separately Excited: Field winding powered from an external source.

- Self-Excited: Field winding powered by the generator's own output.

(c) Calculation:
DC Machines - Question 3 Solutions

Given:

Poles (P) = 6, Slots = 50, Conductors/slot = 25, Z = 1250

Voltage (Eg) = 250 V, Flux (Phi) = 0.06 Wb, Wave-wound: A = 2

Using formula: E = (P * Phi * Z * N) / (60 * A)

=> 250 = (6 * 0.06 * 1250 * N) / (60 * 2)

=> N = 33.33 rpm

For Lap-wound: A = 6

E = (6 * 0.06 * 1250 * 33.33) / (60 * 6) = 25 V

Answers:

- Speed of Prime Mover = 33.33 rpm

- Voltage (Lap-wound) = 25 V
