Measurements & Kinematics

1. What are SI units?

2. How many SI units do we have? List them and state what they measure.
3. Define the following terms: errors and uncertainties.
4. You have been told to measure the length of the …. For a patient using a ruler. The
following were your measurements after measuring 3 times: 20.3cm, 20.4cm, 20.2cm.
What is the random error?
5. What is the body mass index?
6. A nurse is calculating the body mass index (BMI) of a 35 year old female patient who is
extremely obese. The patient’s height is 165cm and her current weight is 120kg. What
would the nurse document as her BMI?
7. How do you estimate the number of heart beats using a stethoscope. Explain briefly.
8. What is the estimated number of heart beats if you counted 18 heart beats?
a) 15s b) 30s c) 60s
𝜇𝑔
9. An ampoule contains a solution of drug of 150 2.5𝑚𝑙 convert this dose into grams per
𝑔
litre ( 𝑙 ).
10. If the density of carbon tetrachloride is 0.793 g/mL, and a sample has a volume of 9.29
mL, what is the mass?
11. The human brain is located in the upper portion of the head with a volume that could be
approximated by a cube l = 20 cm on a side. Brain cells, consisting of 10% neurons and
90% glia vary in size with dimensions ranging from a few micrometres to a metre or so.
Taking d =10 micrometres as a typical dimension and considering a cell to be a cube with
each side having that length, estimate the number of brain cells in the human brain.
12. During a hard sneeze, your eyes might shut for 0.50 s. If you are driving a car at 90 km/h
during such a sneeze, how far does the car move during that time?
13. The position of an object moving along an x axis is given by 𝑥 = 3𝑡 − 4𝑡 2 + 𝑡 3 , where x
is in meters and t in seconds. Find the position of the 3 object at the following values of t:
(a) 1 s, (b) 2 s, (c) 3 s, and (d) 4 s. (e) What is the object's displacement between t = 0 and
t = 4 s? (f) What is its average velocity for the time interval from t=2s to t=4s?
14. What are (a) the x component and (b) the y component of a vector a in the xy plane if its
direction is 250° counterclockwise from the positive direction of the x axis and its
magnitude is 7.3 m?
15. A displacement vector r in the xy plane is 15 m long and directed at angle θ = 30° as
shown in the figure below. Determine (a) the x component and (b) the y component of
the vector.
