Fraction Word Problems - Practice Worksheet

Q1. A skipping rope measures 2 1/3 m. Find the total length of 10 such skipping ropes.

Solution: 2 1/3 = 7/3, Total = 7/3 - 10 = 70/3 = 23 1/3 m

Q2. A woman walks 6 1/4 km in one hour. How much distance will she walk in 2 1/2 hours?

Solution: 6 1/4 = 25/4, 2 1/2 = 5/2

Total = 25/4 - 5/2 = 125/8 = 15 5/8 km

Q3. A pair of shoes was sold at 3/5 of its original price. If original was Rs 600, find the selling price

and discount.

Solution: SP = 3/5 - 600 = Rs 360, Discount = 600 - 360 = Rs 240

Q4. 3/10 of the total school fund is spent on sanitation. If fund = Rs 90,000, how much was spent?

Solution: 3/10 - 90000 = Rs 27,000

Q5. A bucket can hold 9 2/5 litres. How much water in 3 1/2 buckets?

Solution: 9 2/5 = 47/5, 3 1/2 = 7/2

Total = 47/5 - 7/2 = 329/10 = 32.9 litres

Q6. A rectangular garden is 12 1/2 m long and 6 2/5 m wide. Find area.

Solution: 25/2 - 32/5 = 800/10 = 80 m-

Q7. In a class of 40, 1/4 play cricket, 3/10 play basketball, rest play football.

Cricket: 1/4-40=10, Basketball: 3/10-40=12, Football: 40-10-12=18

Q8. 2/5 of students are boys. Girls = 1,200. Find total.

Girls = 3/5, so (3/5)x = 1200 - x = (1200-5)/3 = 2000

Q9. Man gives 1/3 to son, 1/6 to daughter, rest to wife. Wife gets Rs 42,000. Find total.

1/3 + 1/6 = 1/2, so wife gets 1/2 - 1/2 x = 42000 - x = 84000
