EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
This report summarizes my comprehensive learning experience as an intern at M.K.D Pai
& Co, a Chartered Accountancy firm engaged in providing audit, taxation, accounting,
and consultancy services. The internship was an essential part of my professional
development as a [Link] student and a CA aspirant, offering me in-depth exposure to
real-time financial procedures, client interaction, statutory compliance, and ethical
practices in the accounting profession.
From day one, I was welcomed into a disciplined yet friendly environment that
encouraged learning and curiosity. My tasks ranged from basic verification to more
advanced responsibilities under the guidance of seniors. I actively participated in
statutory and internal audits, performing vouching, ledger scrutiny, bank reconciliation,
checking depreciation schedules, and preparing audit working papers. I learned how to
critically analyze books of accounts, assess documentation adequacy, and identify
discrepancies — all while maintaining strict confidentiality and professional standards.
One of the most valuable aspects of my internship was learning how to compute taxable
income for individuals and proprietors. I observed how various heads of income were
calculated — salary, business income, house property, and income from other sources. I
gained hands-on exposure to preparing Income Tax Returns (ITR) and learned to
interpret Form 16, AIS (Annual Information Statement), and TIS (Taxpayer Information
Summary). Understanding these forms helped me link theoretical tax concepts to actual
government documents and client cases.
In terms of software, I became proficient in Tally ERP 9, which was extensively used for
recording journal entries, sales, purchases, payments, and generating trial balances. I also
utilized Excel for reconciliations and working papers, and gained confidence in
navigating the Income Tax e-filing portal for return submission, status tracking, and
rectification filing.
Furthermore, I was introduced to GST compliance. I assisted in preparing GSTR-1 and
GSTR-3B, reconciling GSTR-2B with books, preparing input-output GST calculations,
and understanding how the returns are filed monthly or quarterly depending on turnover.
This hands-on experience helped me understand how GST affects different business
transactions and reporting obligations.
Throughout the internship, I learned how to communicate professionally with clients —
from requesting documents to clarifying discrepancies and sending formal emails. I was
taught the importance of precise documentation, meeting deadlines, maintaining files,
and following firm-wide systems and controls.
Some challenges I faced included:
➢ Interpreting bulk data and mapping it to appropriate tax heads
➢ Understanding real-time GST reconciliation where mismatches occurred
➢ Learning how to deal with incomplete or inconsistent client data
➢ But with continuous feedback, I gradually overcame these hurdles and began
handling tasks more confidently.
This internship gave me immense clarity about my career path and allowed me to
connect classroom concepts to their real-world application. I now feel better equipped to
pursue Chartered Accountancy with deeper insight into audits, income tax, GST, and
accounting practices.
In conclusion, my experience at M.K.D Pai & Co has been both enriching and
transformative. It helped build a solid foundation in professional accounting and
auditing, and provided exposure to tools, documents, and responsibilities that are integral
to a career in finance. I will carry forward this knowledge and discipline into my further
studies and future professional roles.
CHAPTER 1:
THEORITICAL BACKGROUND AND
METHODOLOGY
1.1 Theoretical Background
Auditing and taxation are two of the most crucial functions in the financial and business
environment. Audit ensures transparency, accountability, and reliability of financial
statements, whereas taxation ensures a fair contribution to the government's revenue
system. In India, the need for efficient and ethical auditing practices has grown
immensely with the introduction of complex laws like the Goods and Services Tax
(GST), Income Tax reforms, and stricter corporate governance norms under the
Companies Act, 2013.
Internships provide a bridge between academic theories and real-world practices. As a
student pursuing [Link] and preparing for Chartered Accountancy, undergoing an
internship at a professional audit firm such as M.K.D Pai & Co offered me exposure to
these real-world scenarios. This internship provided the practical application of various
topics covered in subjects such as Financial Accounting, Taxation, Business Law, and
Auditing.
The field of auditing includes processes like vouching, verification, analysis of financial
statements, internal controls, and compliance checks. The taxation domain involves
understanding the applicability of direct and indirect taxes, return filing, TDS, Form 16,
GST returns, etc. Learning how to interpret AIS, TIS, and Form 26AS in a client setting
allowed me to gain a realistic perspective on financial data and compliance norms.
1.2 Significance of the Internship Study
This study is significant in multiple dimensions:
Bridging Theory and Practice: While classroom learning provides foundational
knowledge, this internship enabled me to practically apply those concepts to real client
data, improving my problem-solving and decision-making skills.
Professional Exposure: The experience gave me insight into the functioning of a
Chartered Accountancy firm, client handling, work ethics, data confidentiality,
documentation procedures, and time-bound tasks.
Skill Enhancement: I developed technical skills such as working on Tally ERP 9, Excel-
based reconciliations, and using GST and Income Tax portals. I also learned about key
financial documents like Form 16, Form 26AS, AIS, TIS, and their relevance.
Career Clarity: Working under a mentor like Mr. Veeresh Prakash allowed me to gain a
deeper understanding of my strengths and interests in audit and taxation, reinforcing my
decision to pursue Chartered Accountancy.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The internship study is based on the following key objectives:
1. To understand the practical workings of an audit firm.
2. To learn how statutory and internal audits are conducted.
3. To gain hands-on experience in accounting software like Tally ERP 9.
4. To comprehend GST filing procedures, including GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, and
reconciliation.
5. To understand the process of filing Income Tax Returns and interpreting Form 16,
AIS, and TIS.
6. To observe how client data is managed, reviewed, and verified for accuracy.
7. To develop soft skills such as communication, time management, and teamwork in a
professional setting.
1.4 Scope of the Study
The scope of the internship and this report includes the following:
Audit functions such as voucher checking, ledger scrutiny, and preparation of audit
reports.
Understanding statutory compliance under the Income Tax Act and GST Act.
Exposure to practical filing of ITRs for individuals and firms.
Working knowledge of tools like Tally ERP 9 and MS Excel.
Interaction with clients regarding document collection and clarification of issues.
Real-time understanding of the application of theoretical subjects studied in [Link] and
CA Foundation.
However, the scope is limited to the activities assigned during the internship duration and
may not cover the entire range of services offered by the firm.
1.5 Methodology of the Study
The methodology adopted for this study includes the following approaches:
1. Observation Method:
I learned primarily through observing senior staff during client meetings, audits, and tax
return preparations. Observing real-time execution of financial tasks helped reinforce
theoretical knowledge.
2. Hands-On Practice:
I was actively involved in preparing vouchers, entering transactions in Tally, drafting
audit working papers, and assisting in GST and ITR filings. This practical involvement
formed the core of my learning process.
3. Discussions and Mentoring:
Regular guidance from my mentor, Mr. Veeresh Prakash, and interaction with other
senior professionals helped me understand the logic and rationale behind each task.
4. Secondary Data Review:
Company records, audit reports, books of accounts, and various forms like Form 16,
Form 26AS, and AIS were reviewed to understand actual documentation and formats
used in the profession.
5. Documentation and Reporting:
All the tasks, learning, and experiences were recorded and compiled systematically,
which helped in preparing this comprehensive report.
1.6 Limitations of the Study
While the internship was highly insightful, it had its limitations:
Limited Duration: The internship was for a fixed duration, so exposure to long-term
processes like annual audits or assessments was restricted.
Confidentiality Boundaries: Access to sensitive client data was limited due to
confidentiality, which is ethically necessary but restricted complete analysis.
Task Assignment Based on Hierarchy: Not all tasks were assigned to interns; some
complex work was handled by qualified staff.
Learning Curve: Initially, there was a learning curve in understanding professional
terminology, procedures, and software usage, which took time to overcome.
1.7 Conclusion
This chapter sets the foundation for the internship report by establishing the theoretical
and practical importance of the internship, its objectives, scope, methodology, and
limitations. The internship at M.K.D Pai & Co acted as a real-world laboratory, allowing
me to test, apply, and enhance my academic knowledge and practical skill set.
The coming chapters will detail my experiences, observations, and learnings from the
tasks undertaken during the course of my internship.

Chapter 4:
Departmental Study / Functional Areas
a. Production Department (Audit & Assurance Services)
In a traditional business setup, the production department is responsible for converting
raw materials into finished goods. However, in an audit firm like M.K.D Pai & Co,
"production" equates to the delivery of audit and assurance services to clients.
The firm "produces" value by conducting statutory audits, internal audits, tax audits, and
other related services that help organizations maintain financial transparency and legal
compliance. The audit process involves several phases including planning, fieldwork,
documentation, risk assessment, sampling, client communication, and final reporting.
Each assignment is unique, requiring the application of accounting standards, tax laws,
and auditing principles.
Key responsibilities in this functional area include:
1. Understanding client business models.
2. Examining internal controls and risk factors.
3. Verifying financial statements and related documents.
4. Identifying irregularities or non-compliance.
5. Issuing audit reports that serve as tools for decision-making.
The precision and accuracy in this department reflect the firm’s commitment to quality
and client satisfaction, forming the foundation of its professional service delivery.
b. Human Resource Department
While audit firms may not have large-scale HR departments, human resource functions
are still crucial for the smooth operation of M.K.D Pai & Co. The HR responsibilities are
often managed by partners or senior administrative staff.
At M.K.D Pai & Co, HR responsibilities include:
1. Recruitment and onboarding of interns and qualified staff.
2. Maintaining employee records and documentation.
3. Managing attendance, leaves, and work schedules.
4. Conducting performance appraisals.
5. Facilitating learning through training and upskilling workshops.
As an intern, I witnessed the strong emphasis placed on mentorship and professional
development. Even in the absence of a formal HR team, the firm’s leaders ensure a
collaborative and growth-oriented work culture. Regular interaction with seniors and
guidance from partners like Mr. Veeresh Prakash contributed greatly to my learning
curve.
c. Finance Department (Internal Finance & Client Advisory)
The finance function in an audit firm has two dimensions: internal financial management
and client financial advisory.
1. Internal Finance: M.K.D Pai & Co manages its own financial operations including
billing, collections, payroll, and expense tracking. These activities are handled by senior
staff using accounting software like Tally or customized tools, ensuring compliance with
tax and regulatory frameworks.
2. Client Advisory Services: A core offering of the firm is advising clients on financial
matters. These include:
1. Computation of taxable income.
2. Preparation and filing of Income Tax Returns (ITR).
3. GST compliance and filings.
4. Investment planning and financial forecasting.
During my internship, I assisted with:
1. Filing of ITRs for individuals and firms.
2. Preparation of Form 16 and understanding AIS/TIS reports.
3. Bank reconciliations and maintenance of client books.
These experiences strengthened my grasp of real-world financial applications beyond
textbooks.
d. Marketing Department (Client Relationship & Reputation
Management)
Traditional marketing may not be a significant function in audit firms due to regulatory
restrictions on direct promotions. However, M.K.D Pai & Co engages in professional
networking, relationship building, and reputation management as forms of indirect
marketing.
Key marketing-related activities include:
1. Providing timely and quality services to retain clients.
2. Word-of-mouth referrals and client testimonials.

4. Maintaining credibility through ethical practices and transparency.
The firm’s long-standing reputation in the industry and its loyal client base are a
testament to its strong service-oriented "marketing" efforts. The personalized attention
offered to clients also strengthens trust, thereby serving as the firm's strongest marketing
tool.
e. Research and Development Department (Regulatory Updates &
Knowledge Enhancement)
In the context of an audit firm, the R&D function translates into continuous professional
learning and adaptation to changing laws, standards, and client expectations.
At M.K.D Pai & Co, partners and staff invest time in:
1. Studying the latest changes in tax laws, accounting standards, and auditing
norms.
2. Attending ICAI webinars and workshops.
3. Conducting internal knowledge-sharing sessions.
4. Developing templates and frameworks for standardized reporting.
As an intern, I was encouraged to:
1. Read Income Tax updates and Finance Acts.
2. Explore government portals like Income Tax e-filing, GST portal, and MCA.
3. Work on sample returns using real-world data under supervision.
This emphasis on knowledge development ensures the firm stays updated and continues
to offer relevant, high-quality services.
Conclusion
While M.K.D Pai & Co does not follow the conventional departmental hierarchy of a
manufacturing or marketing enterprise, it functions efficiently through its well-defined
operational areas. Each functional zone—whether it's delivering audits, managing
finances, nurturing employees, sustaining client relations, or staying updated—
contributes to the firm's overall efficiency and integrity.
By mapping traditional departments to an audit firm’s context, this chapter highlights the
professionalism and systemic strength of M.K.D Pai & Co, while underlining the holistic
learning environment it provides for budding commerce and CA aspirants like me.

6.2 Suggestions / Recommendations
Based on my internship experience, I would like to offer the following suggestions which
may support better outcomes for interns, employees, and the firm as a whole:
For the Organization:
1. Digital Documentation Enhancement:
While paper files are still essential, introducing a standardized digital documentation
system would improve efficiency and help during assessments or client queries.
2. Intern Orientation Program:
A short orientation session or handbook for interns on basic tax terms, procedures, and
internal rules would accelerate learning.
3. Expansion into Indirect Tax Advisory:
Considering the rise in GST-related issues and litigations, a dedicated GST advisory
team or vertical could serve as a strategic revenue stream.
4. Improved Infrastructure for Training:
A designated training room or learning corner for freshers and interns to access case
studies, manuals, or webinars could build stronger work readiness.
5. Client Portal:
Introducing a client login portal or app (for document upload, return status, pending
tasks, etc.) could reduce dependency on phone/email communication and save time.
For Interns/Future Learners:
1. Be Curious and Ask Questions:
The learning curve in audit firms is steep; interns should feel free to ask doubts and
clarify as early as possible.
2. Brush Up on Tax Basics:
Understanding concepts such as sections of the Income Tax Act, TDS rates, GST slabs,
and filing due dates beforehand would be highly beneficial.
3. Excel and Tally Proficiency:
Having good working knowledge of Excel shortcuts, Tally entries, and formula
applications can make your work faster and more accurate.
4. Time Management:
Audit work often involves deadlines. Prioritizing tasks and managing files efficiently is
crucial for a smooth experience.
5. Documentation Skills:
Always record what you do — date-wise summaries or process notes help both in review
and in performance assessments.

Information Summary)

4. Basic computation of taxable income
5. Learning about TDS provisions, their application, and e-filing procedures
6. Use of various accounting and audit tools
7. Client data analysis and audit trail verification
8. Bank reconciliation processes and vouching procedures
Each of these tasks not only improved my understanding of the subject but also gave me
the hands-on experience that textbooks alone could never provide. I realized the
importance of accuracy, discipline, confidentiality, and critical analysis in this
profession.
Understanding the Audit Environment
One of the highlights of my internship was observing the detailed audit processes carried
out by the firm. I gained insights into statutory audits, internal audits, and the scope and
limitations of auditing. I learned about risk assessment, internal control testing,
compliance procedures, and how audit documentation is prepared. The structured way of
handling client assignments, keeping clear records, and maintaining audit trails was eye-
opening.
I also observed the working of audit teams, where responsibilities are shared, reviewed,
and refined under supervision. The collaborative approach in audit assignments taught
me how teams function efficiently and how communication between team members
plays a crucial role in completing assignments on time.
Support and Mentorship
My entire experience would not have been this fruitful without the constant support and
guidance of my internship mentor. My guide was extremely supportive, approachable,
and encouraging. Whether it was a doubt regarding a provision or a query related to a
form or software usage, I was never made to feel hesitant to ask.
Every instruction given to me was followed by an explanation that helped me understand
the bigger picture. Even my mistakes were treated as learning opportunities, and
constructive feedback was always provided with patience and clarity.
The mentor not only trained me in the technical aspects of the profession but also guided
me on how to carry myself in a professional environment—how to interact with clients,
respect timelines, and maintain the integrity of the profession.

solutions, enhancing my decision-making and analytical skills.

However, each challenge made me more resilient and resourceful. With time and
practice, I started picking up the pace, my confidence grew, and I began to contribute
more effectively to the team.
The most important lesson I learned was that no task is too small, especially in this
profession. Every voucher verified, every computation made, and every return filed adds
value to the firm’s work and builds the intern’s understanding.
