Electromagnetic Stresses in Transformers

The document discusses electromagnetic stresses in high voltage transformers, highlighting the forces caused by the interaction of magnetic fields and current, particularly through Lorentz's force equation. It outlines the causes and effects of these stresses, including insulation damage, vibrations, and overheating, as well as design considerations and advanced materials to mitigate these issues. Additionally, it emphasizes the importance of testing and diagnostic methods to ensure transformer reliability and performance.

CAUSES AND EFFECTS
VIBRATIONS IN
TRANSFORMER
The alternating magnetic fields produced by
the AC current fluctuate 50-60 times per
second (depending on frequency), causing
periodic magnetostriction (a material’s
expansion and contraction in response to a
magnetic field).
LORENT’S FORCE
When current flows through the windings, it
generates a magnetic field. The interaction
between this current and the magnetic field
creates mechanical forces (Lorentz forces)
that push and pull the windings.
OCCURRING SHORT
CIRCUIT CURRENT
During a fault (like a short circuit), the
current through the windings increases
drastically—often 20-30 times the normal
current. This amplifies electromagnetic forces
because these forces are proportional to the
square of the current
F∝ I2
INRUSH CURRENT
When a transformer is first energized, a large
surge of magnetizing current (called inrush
current) flows until the core reaches
magnetic saturation Effect .
