GERUND PENGERTIAN :

MERUPAKAN BENTUK V-ING YANG BERPERAN SEPERTI NOUN


DALAM KALIMAT, YAKNI SEBAGAI SUBEK ATAU OBJEK.
FUNCTION OF GERUND
• AS SUBJECT
e.g. :
- Missing you all day becomes my habit now.
- Watering the flowers and washing Ducati bike are my morning
routines.

• OBJECT OF VERB
e.g. :
- My friends have suggested checking my answer sheet before I collect it.
- We enjoyed eating the dinner that had been provided by him last night.

• OBJECT OF PREPOSITION COMBINATIONS (BOUND PREPOSITION)


e.g. :
- The teacher is sometime tired of reminding the students.
- Those men are taking care of moving that most expensive vase.
THE FURTHER EXPLANATIONS
The pattern of Gerund
(The base form of Verb + ing)
-> Singing

The pattern of Gerund Phrase


(V-ing + (Pro)Noun (phrase)/Prepositional Pharse)
-> Loving him
-> Kissing grandchildren
-> Mopping the dirty floor
-> Jogging in the morning

As Subject,
It is always placed before the verb.
=> Singing makes me happy.
=> Flying in the sky would be reality if we had swings.
As Object,
It is always placed after the verb or preposition.

=> I started working there two weeks ago.


The gerund (working there) is the object of the verb (started), so it
is called as the Object of Verb.

=> That kind teacher has taught me repairing this motorcycle


many times.
The gerund (repairing this motorcycle) is the object of the verb
(taught), and this example has two object, Pronoun and Gerund
phrase.

=> I am interested in learning more about your culture.


The gerund (learning more about your culture) is the object of the
preposition (in). In this example, the sentence uses Bound
Preposition (interested in).
Try to analyze these following
sentences!
Mark by “V” if the sentence has gerund. Then, it is marked by “X” when it has
no gerund.
1. ____ Thanks for joining our meeting.
2. ____ Walking is good exercise.
3. ____ I heard some surprising news.
4. ____ Worrying about things you can’t control is unproductive.
5. ____ Bob and Ann are playing tennis.
6. ____ Their hobby is playing tennis.
7. ____ Before leaving, please turn off the lights.
8. ____ Adam avoids eating fast food.
9. ____ That kids are laughing happily because they look at the swimming fish.
10. ___ I usually invite my friends to swim together in the swimming pool.
Let’s discuss
• The swimming fish
The word Swimming is participle that describes the activity of the word
Fish, and we know that it can modifies Noun.
Other examples:
- The barking dog usually bites.
- It was an exciting game.

• The swimming pool


The word Swimming is gerund that describes the function of the word
Pool, so it can be said it modifies the Noun.
Other examples:
- Running shoes
- Parking area
Other uses of Gerund
• To express recreational activities
The pattern => GO + V-ing (Gerund)
e.g.
- Do you always go shopping on holidays?

- Yesterday, I went fishing with my father.

• As complement of the verb (to be)


The pattern => It comes after “to be”.
e.g.
- My activity at 7 AM is reading a newspaper.

- Two years ago, my hobby was playing soccer.


Does it have Passive Form?
Yes, it does. => Being + Past Participle (V3)
It is used when the doer of the action is unknown, unimportant, or
obvious from the context.
e.g.
- Passive : Being praised by the teacher made her happy.

(She received the praise.)


- He dislikes being criticized. (He receives criticism)

- Active : Praising the teacher made her happy.


(She gave the praise).
- He likes criticizing others. (He criticizes others)
