Third Angle Orthographic Projection

Orthographic projection utilizes two methods: first angle projection, used in the UK, and third angle projection, used in the US and Canada, to represent objects in two dimensions. Dimensioning in orthographic drawings involves using dimension and extension lines to accurately depict the size of objects, with specific guidelines for placement and formatting. The primary uses of orthographic projection include serving as blueprints for construction, guiding builders, and accurately representing the true shape and size of objects.

Angle of projection

Angle of projection in Orthographic drawing

Angles of projection
Orthographic projection is drawn in two methods called angles of projection.
These angles of projection are (1) First angle projection and (2) Third angle
projection. First angle projection is the British system of orthographic
projection, while the third angle is the American and Canadian system of
orthographic projection. The two methods are universally accepted in drawing.

First angle projection

In first angle projection, the front elevation of an object is drawn in the second
quadrant, while the plan is drawn in the third quadrant. The side elevation is
drawn in the first quadrant. The fourth quadrant has no view drawn on it.
Third angle projection
In third angle projection, the front elevation is drawn on the fourth quadrant,
while the plan is drawn on the first. quadrant (horizontal plane). The side
elevation is usually drawn on the third quadrant. The main feature of third angle
projection is that a view of an object is drawn to represent the side of the object
nearest to it in the adjacent view. In other words, the right and side of an
elevation will be drawn to the right of that elevation, and all lines required to
form a new view will be projected away from the elevation.

Dimensioning in Orthographic drawing

Dimensioning involves using lines called dimension and extension lines to
depict the size of a drawing. Regular objects like rectangles, squares,
triangles, cylinders, and prisms have lengths, widths and heights. For them to be
drawn and produced, their dimensions have to be indicated.
The following points should be noted on dimensioning of a drawing:
1 All dimensions on a drawing should be of the same unit.
2 Dimensions should be placed outside the outline of a view, except when di
1. Extension lines are used to indicate lengths to be dimensioned. Extension
lines are thin and continuous, and are drawn from the end of the lengths to be
dimensioned.
2. Dimension lines, which usually carry arrowheads on both ends, are placed
between the extension lines.

4. Extension and dimension lines do not cross each other.
5. Centre lines and outlines are not used as dimension or extension lines.

7. The dimension line for an angle is a circular axis whose centre is on the point
of the angle.

Uses of orthographic projection

1 Orthographic projection is a blueprint for the construction of objects in the
workshop. 2 It acts as a guide to the person who is to
do the construction.
3 It shows the true shape and size of an object.
