The tradition of multi-generational households in Vietnam stems from
its agrarian past, where shared labor in rice farming required close
family cooperation. Unlike Europe's nuclear family model shaped by
individual farming, Vietnam’s wet-rice agriculture and Confucian
values fostered extended families built on hierarchy, filial piety, and
collective identity. These households functioned not just economically,
but also as spaces for moral education and social order.

Confucianism legitimized a patriarchal order in which power resided with the
oldest male, often marginalizing women and younger members.
