MIDDLE DISTANCE

RACES

GRADE 8
● Middle distance races are events that take place on
the athletics track.
● They are differentiated from sprints by distance and
starting positions.
● Standing start technique is used by the athletes when
starting the races and the commands used are “On
your marks” and “Go”
● The middle distance races are 800M, 1500M and
3000M.
● In the 800M race, athletes start in their designated
lanes which are staggered.
● In 1500M and 3000M races, athletes stand in a
curved line at the start of the race.
● 800M is 2 laps, 1500M is 3¾ laps and 3000M is 7½
laps.
STEPS INVOLVED IN PERFORMING MIDDLE DISTANCE RACES

1. Take off
● Keep arms at at a 90⁰ angle and close to the
body
● Position one foot slightly ahead of the other.
● Lean slightly forward .
● Eyes focused ahead
2. Pacing

● This is the speed at which an athlete runs i.e. the


average time it takes to cover a specific distance.
● It helps to establish the athletes rhythm, which helps
to determine how well the race will flow.
● Maintaining a good pace is key in good performance
of middle distance races.
3. Stride Length

● Is the measurement of the distance covered by a


runner’s feet (From the toe of one foot to the toe of
the other foot).
● Stride length varies from one person to the other
depending on their height, leg length and running
technique.
4. Recovery

● This is the process of restoring physical and mental


wellness after engaging in a physically demanding
activity such as middle distance race.
● Recovery activities include stretching, massage and
rest.
