Learning Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the student should be able to:
a. determine the various properties of textile fibers, physical, thermal,
chemical, and biological
What I Need To Know?
This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here
to help you understand the Clothing Selection, Purchase and Care. The
scope of this module is to fully understand the Properties of Textile Fibers,
Physical, Thermal, Chemical, and Biological. The lesson are arranged to
follow the standard sequence of the course.
Activity
Unscramble Me
Direction: This activity is called Unscramble Me all you need to do is to
unscramble the scrambled word to form to it’s original word. Write your
answer in the space provided.

1. __________ understanding these properties helps in selecting the
right fabric for specific uses, ensuring performance, durability, and
comfort.
2. __________ understanding these properties helps in selecting fabrics
for specific environments and applications, ensuring their
Flammability, Antimicrobial Properties longevity, safety, and
functionality.
3. __________ are the basic building blocks of fabrics and are
categorized into natural fibers, synthetic fibers, and regenerated

Abstraction
Textile Property are those which have properties that allow them to be
spun into yarn or directly made into fabric. This means they need to be
strong enough to hold their shape, flexible enough to be shaped into a
fabric or yarn, elastic enough to stretch, and durable enough to last.
Determine the various properties of
textile fibers, Physical, Thermal,
Chemical, and Biological
Physical Property - The physical
properties of fabrics refer to the
characteristics that can be measured and
observed without changing the fabric’s
chemical composition. These properties play
a significant role in determining the
suitability of a fabric for various applications.
Here are some key physical properties of
fabrics: Durability, Strength, Density,
Thickness, and Weight.
Thermal Property – Thermal conductivity is
among important thermal properties of a
fabric, which is also related to the breathability of the fabric. A fabric with
a high thermal conductivity permits transfer of heat from a hot side, such
as the human body to a cooler side such as the air on the other side of
clothing.
Chemical Property – The chemical
properties of fabrics refer to their
behavior and interactions with various
chemicals, including their reactivity,
resistance, and composition. Here are
some key chemical properties of
different types of fabrics: Absorbency,
Flammability, Dye Affinity, Reactivity
with Acids and Alkalis.
Biological Property – The biological
properties of fabrics pertain to their
interactions with living organisms,
including humans, microorganisms,
and insects. These properties affect
the comfort, hygiene, durability, and
overall performance of the fabrics in
various environments. Here are some key biological properties of fabrics:
Insect Resistance, Allergenic Potential, Antimicrobial Properties,
Biodegradability and etc.
Application
Direction: The students will be grouped into 4 groups. This activity is all
about “Textile Properties Investigation and Comparison” students will be
going to investigate and compare each fabric given. After, students will
be going to answer the follow up question given below. Students will be
graded according to the rubrics.
Materials Needed:
Different types of fabrics (cotton, polyester, wool, silk, nylon)
Water
Measuring cups
Stopwatch or timer
Weighing scale
Heat source (e.g., hairdryer)
Magnifying glass or microscope
Scissors
Pen and paper for recording observations
Procedure:
1. Visual and Tactile Inspection:
● Examine each textile sample using a magnifying glass or
microscope. Describe the texture, weave, and appearance.
● Record observations about how each fabric feels (e.g., soft, rough,
stretchy).
2. Water Absorption Test:
● Weigh each dry textile sample. Submerge each sample in water for
a set amount of time (e.g., 1 minute).
● Remove and gently blot excess water. Weigh the wet samples.
● Calculate the amount of water absorbed by each textile.
● Record and compare the water absorption capacity.
3. Drying Time Test:
● After the water absorption test, hang or lay out the wet samples to
dry.
● Use a stopwatch to measure the time it takes for each sample to dry
completely.
● Record and compare the drying times.
4. Strength Test:
● Cut equal-sized strips from each textile sample.
● Gradually apply weight to each strip until it breaks. Record the
amount of weight each fabric can withstand.
● Alternatively, if weights are not available, perform a simple tensile
test by pulling on the fabric strips and comparing the force required
to tear them.
5. Heat Resistance Test:
● Apply a heat source to a small section of each textile sample and
observe any changes.
● Record how each fabric reacts to heat (e.g., melting, burning,
shrinking).
Rubric
Points Criteria
20 Students follow all the procedures.
Students are collaborating with
their groups.
15 Students are somehow following
the procedures and some did not
collaborating to each other.
10 Some procedure are well followed
and other members are not
collaborating to each other.
5 Not following at all.
Questions:
1. How important to test each fabric by their physical properties,
thermal properties, chemical properties, biological properties?
2. Identify which properties are most important for specific
applications, such as sportswear, upholstery, or winter clothing
