COHESIVE DEVICES
In English, grammar is the logical organization of phrases, sentences and
clauses to make them easier to read and comprehend. The most common
way to organize writing in this way is through cohesive devices. Readers will
quickly follow when words, concepts, and descriptions come together clearly,
and the writing is coherent. The concepts flow together easily and simply.
Writing is most frequently organized using cohesive devices. They are also
known as linking words or connectors. Linking words are a great way to join
your ideas and make your sentences and paragraphs much more logical.
Cohesive Devices – are words or phrases used to connect ideas between
different parts of text. Cohesive devices affect comprehension because they
help readers integrate information between sentences in a text.
These are the different categories or classifications of cohesive devices and
later let us identify example in each category.
ADDING – words under this category join nouns, phrases and clauses. And
these are the cohesive devices under the this category, and too, moreover,
also, as well as, at this point, furthermore.

The word “and” here joined two verbs which are stopped and gazed up.

In this example the word “too” represents a person as an additional visitor

The two actions being joined in this example are broke and destroy, and the

SEQUENCING – words under this category help the readers understand the
sequence of items or events. Words under this category are first, second,
finally, next, after, then and lastly.
This example shows how Charles sequence his review routine using the
words, first, next, then and lastly.
COMPARING – The third category is comparing, when we say comparing we
will note or identify the similarities of persons, situations or events. Words
under this category are similarly, like, as with, just as, equally, likewise and
in the same way.
1. In this example, the two things being compared are the essay she made
for their quiz and the final exam using the word similarly.
2. While in this example, the description made by vins and jake for trisha and
stacy are being compared using the phrase “in the same way”
CONTRASTING – In contrasting we take note or identify the differences of a
persons, things, situation or events using contrasting cues like, however, but,
unless, although, yet, unlike and instead of.
1. the contrasting ideas in this example are Paul won’t come and inviting
Claire will make Paul come. Unless here is used as condition in which the
main clause is Paul won’t come and the subordinating clause is unless you
invite Claire.
2. in this example the contrasting ideas being presented are Tanza is a small
town and several famous food chains are available.
CAUSE AND EFFECT- is a relationship between events or things as a result
of the other.
