ALUMINUM 3XXX ALLOY CHARACTERISTICS
Aluminum 3000 series alloy has Manganese (Mn) as the main alloying element,
which imparts some unique properties to this series of alloys. Some of the key
characteristics of grade 3000 aluminum alloys are –
1. Moderate mechanical strength
2. Non-heat treatable
3. Further strengthening through strain hardening (cold work)
4. Excellent formability
5. Solid solution hardening with Magnesium
6. Superior ductility
7. Ultimate tensile strength of 16ksi to 41ksi
8. High corrosion resistance
9. Readily weldable with filler alloys
10. Can be given surface finishing such as Anodizing
ALUMINUM- MANGANESE PHASE DIAGRAM
Aluminum-Manganese (Al-Mn) alloys exhibit different phases based on
their composition, cooling rate, and heat treatment. The key phases found
in Al-Mn alloys include:
1. Aluminum Solid Solution (α-Al)
This is the primary phase, where manganese is dissolved in the aluminum
matrix. The solubility of Mn in Al is limited, with the maximum being
around 1.82% at 658°C (near the melting point of aluminum).Beyond this
limit, excess manganese precipitates out to form intermetallic
compounds.
2. Al₆Mn (Intermetallic Phase)
The primary intermetallic compound that forms in Al-Mn alloys is Al₆Mn. It
appears when the manganese content exceeds its solubility limit in
aluminum, typically during slow cooling. Al₆Mn particles are known to
improve the strength and wear resistance of the alloy.
3. Quasi-crystalline Phases
Under rapid solidification conditions, such as in melt-spun or cast alloys, quasi-
crystalline phases can form.
These phases, like the icosahedral Al-Mn phase, exhibit unique non-periodic
atomic arrangements that can enhance mechanical properties.
4. Metastable Phases
During rapid cooling or processing, metastable phases such as Al₁₁Mn₄ or γ-Al₄Mn
may form. These phases tend to transform into more stable phases upon
subsequent heat treatment.
5. Ternary and Complex Phases
In more complex Al-Mn alloys containing other elements (such as Si or Cu),
additional phases like Al₁₂Mn₃Si₂ or ternary compounds involving copper or iron
can form.
The exact phase composition in an Al-Mn alloy depends on its manganese
content, cooling rates, and thermal treatments, influencing its microstructure
and mechanical properties like strength, ductility, and hardness.
Summary of Key Reactions and Phases:
Eutectic Reaction: In the Al-Mn system, a eutectic reaction occurs at around 1.8 wt%
Mn and 658°C, where the liquid phase transforms into α-Al (solid solution) and Al6Mn
upon cooling.
Precipitation Strengthening: The presence of Al6Mn precipitates helps in
precipitation strengthening, particularly when the alloy undergoes heat treatment
and aging.
These phases and their stability depend heavily on the processing techniques used
(e.g., solidification rate, heat treatment). In general, low manganese contents
produce solid solution alloys, while higher manganese levels lead to the formation of
intermetallic phases like Al6Mn, improving properties such as strength and wear
resistance.
APPLICATIONS FOR ALUMINUM 3XXX SERIES
ALLOYS
Moderate mechanical strength precludes these alloys from structural applications.
Al-Mn alloys are commercially available in sheets, wire, foils, and containers. Other
forms like bars, plates, or tubes may only be manufactured on special requests.
Cookware
Grade 3xxx alloys can withstand high temperatures without changes. Pans and pots
initially used these alloys for production. Still, they’re one of the major
components of many heat-resistant utensils. The binary Al-Mn 3003 alloy has
applications in rigid containers.
Automotive
Vehicles have these alloys in the heat exchangers. These 3000 series alloys can also
take over stainless steel for automotive trim. However, they’re like alternatives
rather than the preferred material.
Processing Plants
Food and chemical processing units and their handling components have 3xxx series
applications. The Al-Mn-Mg 3004 alloy has uses in manufacturing beverage cans.
Some power plants also take advantage of heat insulation using these alloys.
