Tutorial 1 - Transients in electric systems

Exercise 1:
At t = 0 the generator is connected to the circuit. Determine the variation with time of the current
flowing in the generator. We give R = 6000Ω, L =30 mH, e = 6 V.

Exercise 2:
The ideal current source gives the step η(t) = 1 for t>0, and 0 for t<0. Find the differential equation
verified by the voltage u for t>0.

Exercise 3:
The switch is closed at t = 0. Find the voltage u(t) at the capacitor.
We give: R = 10 kΩ, C = 100 µF, e = 15 V.

Exercise 4:
The switch has been at the a position for a long time. At t=0, the switch, which is of the make-
before- break type, is set to position b, such that the inductor current i is not interrupted.
a) Find the expression of i(t) for t ≥ 0
b) What is the initial value of the inductor voltage u after setting the switch to the position b
c) Find the time for which the inductor voltage is equal to 24 V
d) Plot u(t) and i(t).

Exercise 5:
The switch has been at the a position for a long time. At t = 0, the switch is set to position b.
a) What is the initial value of uc ?
b) What is the final value of uc ?
c) What is the circuit time constant when the switch is at position b ?
d) What is the expression of uc(t) for t ≥ 0 ?
e) What is the expression of ic(t) for t ≥ 0 ?
f) At what time after the switch has been set to position b, will the capacitor voltage cross the
value zero ?
g) Plot ic(t) and uc(t)
