2010 NATIONAL SENIOR CERTIFICATE (NSC) EXAMINATION

2008/ 2009 FULL TIME AND PART TIME REPEATERS &
TRANSFERRED CANDIDATES

1. The Directorate Assessment and Examinations strives to administer examinations

with zero defect. This can only be achieved if the registration of all candidates is
error-free.

2. This Assessment Instruction deals with the registration of candidates for the 2010
National Senior Certificate Examination. It outlines the learners who may be
registered by a school or part-time Examination Centre.

LEARNERS WHO WILL BE REGISTERED FOR 2010 NSC EXAMINATION

3. 2009 Grade 11 learners will be registered as 2010 NSC Grade 12 candidates in

the school in which they offered Grade 11. A preliminary schedule of entries of
these candidates will be sent to schools for checking and verification. Please
note that no subject changes will be accepted, as the closing date for subject
changes was 31 January 2010.

4. The Eastern Cape Department of Education affords all learners, who did not
meet the requirements for a certificate in the 2009 National Senior Certificate
(NSC) examination, an opportunity to return to full-time study at a registered
school. These learners have to present school-based assessment (SBA),

 orals and practical assessment tasks (PATS) again in 2010. Previous marks
are not carried over. These are known as full-time Repeaters. (Annexure A)

5. There are a number of learners who passed the National Senior Certificate in
2008 or 2009 and who wish to write one or more NSC subjects in 2010. These are
known as part-time Repeaters. (Annexure B)
These candidates fall into two categories:

5.1 Candidates who passed and wish to improve the 2008/2009 NSC
result and who have recorded SBA/Oral/PAT marks. This could be to
improve the status of their qualification i.e. attain entrance to diploma or
bachelors study or just to improve marks of one or more subjects offered
in 2008 or 2009. (Life Orientation not included).

5.2 Candidates who passed in 2009 (this does not apply to candidates who
wrote in 2008) and who wish to change a subject for which there is
no recorded SBA/Oral/PAT marks for that subject. E.g. Change one
subject such as Mathematical Literacy to Mathematics, which may be
required for career or study purposes.

6. There are learners who met the promotion requirements for Grade 11 in 2009 at
another school or Province and who are seeking registration as 2010 NSC candidates.
These are known as Transferred candidates. (Annexure C)

REGISTERING A REPEATER OR TRANSFERRED CANDIDATE

In order to register as a part-time candidate for NSC in 2010, the candidate must meet the
following requirements:

1. Candidates must be in possession of a 2008 or 2009 NSC Statement of results issued

by the National Department. This means that the candidate must have written the NSC
examination in either 2008 or 2009.
2. Candidates may only register for NCS subjects.
3. Candidates may register for one or more subjects.
4. SBA, Oral and PAT marks have a shelf-life of three examinations (excluding a supplementary
examination) and will be carried over from 2008 or 2009.
5. Candidates may change only one subject from those studied in 2009.
6. Candidates who have changed a subject and do not have recorded SBA, ORAL or PAT
marks must be registered at a full-time centre for tuition in this subject and have written
proof from the full-time tuition centre of this registration.
7. Part-time candidates registered for NCS subjects will write the examination in November
2010 and not in April/May 2010.

DOCUMENTATION REQUIRED TO REGISTER A REPEATER OR TRANSFERRED

CANDIDATE

1. A South African ID book. This is compulsory and no candidate may access a District
examination centre without it. Affidavits are not accepted.
2. A part time registration form completed in full.

3. A copy of 2008/2009 NSC Statement of Results.

4. A letter from the Principal of a registered school that will provide tuition, assess and moderate
SBA, Oral and PAT marks for the subject where no recorded marks are available.
This applies to a part-time repeater only.
5. Full contact details.

REGISTRATION PROCESS

1. The candidate must register at the District Office closest to his/her home.
2. The District Office will assign an examination centre to the candidate.
3. The District Office will receive and verify all the above documentation before accepting the
registration of the candidate.
4. The candidate must agree to present himself/herself at the District Office to sign all preliminary
entry schedules and to collect an Admission Letter to the examination.

SUBMISSION BY SCHOOLS TO DISTRICTS:

1. Entry forms must be completed in full.

2. A copy of the ID and the 2008/2009 NSC statement MUST be attached to a full time
or part time repeater registration form. No registration forms will be accepted by the
Provincial Office without these two attachments. (Annexure A & B)
3. A copy of the 2009 Grade 11 report (compulsory) and transfer card (where available)
MUST be attached to a transferred learner registration form. No registration forms will be
accepted by the Provincial Office without the attachments. (Annexure C)
The validity of the documents of a transferred learner will be checked on the promotion
schedule of an Eastern Cape school. If the learner is from another Province, the validity
of the documents will be checked by officials in the relevant Province. Principals are
urged to inform parents of this process and to register these learners conditionally until
notification of their registration in the 2010 NSC.
4. The summary of total learners in Grade 12 must be completed. This should indicate
learner numbers as at 12 March 2010 as per version of question paper required (English
or Afrikaans). Annexure D.
5. The declaration form provided is also to be completed and submitted. Annexure E.
6. Schools are urged to meet the deadline date as NO late entries will be accepted.

CLOSING DATES

1. Registration closes at District Offices on Friday 12 March 2010. No late entries will be
accepted under any circumstances.
2. Registration forms supported by full verified documentation must be submitted to the District
Co-Ordination Unit at the Provincial Office on or before Friday 19 March 2010.

Principals are asked to disseminate this information widely to ensure that the class of 2010 is able
to access Higher Education Institutions and follow the career paths of their choice.
