IPMAT 2026: Linear & Circular Races Guide

The document covers concepts and numerical problems related to linear and circular races, including various practice questions from previous IPMAT exams. It provides specific examples of race scenarios and calculations involving speeds and distances. Key points for solving these problems are also summarized, emphasizing the use of LCM for determining meeting times in races.

QUESTION- 1

#Q. In a flat race, A beats B by 15 m and C by 29 m. When B and C run over the same
course together, B wins by 15 m. The length of the course is
[JIPMAT PYQ]

A 250 m

B 225 m

C 200 m

D 275 m
QUESTION- 2

#Q. In a 400-meter race, Ashok beats Bipin and Chandan respectively by 15 seconds
and 25 seconds. If Ashok beats Bipin by 150 meter, by how many meter does Bipin
beat Chandan in the race? [IPMAT Indore PYQ]

A 150

B 50

C 80

D 100
QUESTION- 3

#Q. Vinita drives a car which has four gears. The speed of the car in the fourth gear
is five times its speed in the first gear. The car takes twice the time to travel a certain
distance in the second gear as compared to the third gear. In a 100 km journey, if
Vinita travels equal distances in each of the gears, she takes 585 minutes to complete
the journey. Instead, if the distances covered in the first, second, third, and fourth
gears are 4 km, 4 km, 32 km, and 60 km, respectively, then the total time taken, in
minutes, to complete the journey, will be______. [IPMAT Indore PYQ]

Points to Remember :
1. When two runners have started at same time, from same point & they are running in
same direction, then time required to meet for the first time at the starting point,
LCM of (T1, T2)

2. When two runners have started at same time, from same point & they are running in
opposite direction, then time required to meet for the first time at the starting point,
LCM of (T1, T2)

3. When two runners have started at same time, from same point & they are running in
same direction, then the time required for their first meeting anywhere on the track,
𝐿
𝑆𝑓 −𝑆𝑠

4. When two runners have started at same time, from same point & they are running in
opposite direction, then the time required for their first meeting anywhere on the track,
𝐿
𝑆𝑓+𝑆𝑠
QUESTION- 4

#Q. Ramesh and Suresh start running on a circular track (length 420 meters) from
the same point simultaneously with speed of 3 m/s and 7 m/s. If they keep on
moving infinitely, then answer the following.
1) After how much time from the start they will meet again at the starting point?
2) After how much time from the start they will meet for the first time anywhere on
the track, if they walk in same direction?
3) After how much time from the start they will meet for the first time anywhere on
the track, if they walk in opposite direction?
4) Find the ratio of different points on the
track they will meet, if they walk in same direction and in opposite direction?
QUESTION- 5

#Q. Two friends run a 3-kilometer race along a circular course of length 300
meters. If their speeds are in the ratio 3:2, the number of times the winner passes
the other is __________. [IPMAT Indore PYQ]
QUESTION- 6

#Q. Guru and Chela walk around a circular path of 115 km in circumference, they
start together from the same point. If they walk at speed of 4 and 5 kmph
respectively, also they walk in the same direction, when will they meet?
[IPMAT Rohtak PYQ]

A After 115 hours

B After 125 hours

C After 120 hours

D After 210 hours
