Chapter 3

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter consists of the research design, respondents of the study,

research procedure, research instrument and statistical treatment of data.

Research Design

This study will employ descriptive correlational survey research design.

According to Calmorin (2021). A descriptive research design is used when a

study focuses on the present condition and the purpose is to find new truth. It

is only useful when the data to be gathered concerns the present condition

providing the value of facts and focusing the attention to the most important

things to be reported. On the other hand, correlational design is valuable in

providing facts on which scientific judgment is based on determining the

relationship of two variables using correlation analysis, based on the

computed and analyzed data.

As mentioned by Fraenkel and Wallen (2020), Calmorin (2021) and

Ardizone (2023) a survey research design is a strategy that enables one to

study naturally occurring phenomena as well as to answer questions about

the distribution of and relationships among characteristics of people as they

exist in their natural setting. The data will be collected from at least a part of

the population as basis for assessing the incidence, distribution, and

interrelations of phenomena and variables as they occur in the lives of

people.
26

Respondents of the Study

Purposive sampling will be employed in this study. According to

Fraenkel and Wallen (2020) and Ardizone (2023), purposive sampling is used

to select a sample which the researcher believes, based on prior information

and knowledge of the sample respondents, provided the data needed in the

study. In this research, the ability and knowledge of the stakeholders helped

the researcher in determining the level of entrepreneurial skills, capabilities

and learning competencies among technical-vocational and livelihood

learners using researcher-made questionnaires to be develop and to be

administered to the 100 respondents of this study. One hundred (100)

technical-vocational and livelihood learners will be selected by considering

their gender, age, geographical area, and different grade levels in senior high

school department. This research will be conducted in Magdalena Integrated

National High School for the School Year 2023-2024.

Research Procedure

The purpose of the study was explained to the research respondents.

They notified that they have the right to decline to take part in the study and

they could depart the research whenever the respondents wanted to.

Respondents also ensured that their personal information will be suitably

protected and will not be revealed to anyone. After that, the respondents

signed the consent form. Second, data collected from the respondents

through a researcher-made questionnaire. Data was collected for tabulation

and analysis.
27

The researcher used a three-part researcher-made questionnaire

consisting of (1) Entrepreneurial Skills, (2) Learning Competencies and (3)

Entrepreneurial Capabilities of Technical-Vocational and Livelihood Learners

at Magdalena Integrated National High School, Madalena Sub-Office.

Research Instrument

Questions aims to explore the relationship of entrepreneurial skills,

learning competencies and entrepreneurial capabilities of technical-vocational

and livelihood learners at Magdalena Integrated National High School,

Magdalena Sub-Office. The participants will be asked to give their insights

into entrepreneurial skills, learning competencies and entrepreneurial

capabilities that they acquire with the SHS Curriculum.

The researcher will make the questionnaire for this research. This is to

ensure that questions included are appropriate to DepEd Philippines context.

It will consist of the Likert scale survey questionnaire. Each item expressed in

the respondents’ mother tongue. An intercoder-reliability test (Cronbach α)

will also be employed for the reliability and validity of the researcher-made

questionnaire before the proper dissemination of the research survey

questionnaire.

Statistical Treatment

The data will be tabulated, organized, analyzed, and interpreted with

the use of descriptive as well as inferential statistical tools, including

frequency count, percentage, median, standard deviation, Kruskal Wallis H-

28

Test, One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), and Spearman’s Rank

Correlation at 0.05 level of significance.

Using both descriptive and inferential statistical tools is important because descriptive statistics summarize data characteristics such as frequency, percentage, and standard deviation, which help in understanding the dataset's structure. Inferential statistics, like ANOVA and Spearman’s Rank Correlation, allow the study to make generalizations and determine relationships between variables beyond the sample, thus providing insights into the prevalence and strength of relationships . This combination enhances the study's ability to draw meaningful conclusions from the data .

Purposive sampling contributes to the validity of this research by allowing the researcher to select respondents based on their knowledge and ability to provide relevant data for the study. This method ensures that the sample is representative of the characteristics being studied and that the insights gained are pertinent to the research objectives . By considering factors such as gender, age, and grade level, the research can gather diverse perspectives that enhance the study's depth and applicability .

Focusing on naturally occurring phenomena allows the study to capture authentic behaviors and interactions concerning entrepreneurial capabilities as they exist in real contexts, providing insights that reflect genuine circumstances and conditions faced by learners. This contributes to a better understanding of how these capabilities develop in natural settings and can inform strategies that align with learners’ actual experiences and challenges, making the findings more applicable and impactful for educational improvements .

The main purpose of using a descriptive correlational survey research design in this study is to focus on the present conditions to find new truths and to determine the relationships between variables. This design is useful when the aim is to gather data concerning current facts that are central to the study . Unlike experimental designs, which manipulate variables to establish cause-effect relationships, descriptive correlational designs involve observing naturally occurring variables to identify relationships without attempting to change them .

The study's research procedure addresses ethical considerations by informing respondents of their right to decline participation, ensuring the protection and confidentiality of their personal information, and obtaining informed consent. These steps are significant as they uphold the ethical standards of voluntary participation and confidentiality, which are crucial for maintaining trust and integrity in research .

The Likert scale contributes to the measurement of entrepreneurial skills and capabilities by allowing respondents to express degrees of agreement or disagreement with statements relating to skills, competencies, and capabilities. This scaling provides quantitative data that can be analyzed statistically, offering a nuanced understanding of respondents’ perceptions and the extent of these skills' development . It enables the study to capture the intensity of attitudes and opinions systematically .

The intercoder reliability test, such as Cronbach's alpha, plays a role in verifying the consistency and reliability of the responses in the research questionnaire. By ensuring that the survey items consistently measure the same construct, the test affects the study's outcomes by enhancing the credibility and dependability of the data collected. It helps ensure that the questionnaire items produce reliable and comparable results across different respondents .

The use of a researcher-made questionnaire impacts the study by allowing the researcher to tailor the instrument specifically to the context and objectives, focusing directly on the capabilities and skills pertinent to technical-vocational learners. This customization ensures that all questions are relevant to the specific competencies involved and aligned with the educational framework of the SHS curriculum in the Philippines, potentially increasing validity. It also allows the researcher to include culturally specific contexts and terminologies that can better capture the nuances of the learners' experiences .

The study uses statistical methods such as the Kruskal Wallis H-Test, One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), and Spearman’s Rank Correlation to analyze relationships among variables. These were chosen because they allow for comparison of more than two groups and examination of non-parametric data (Kruskal Wallis), testing for significant differences between group means (ANOVA), and measuring the strength and direction of association between ranked variables (Spearman’s Rank). Use of diverse methods enables comprehensive analysis of correlations and differences across data sets.

Including the respondents' mother tongue in the questionnaire design impacts data collection by improving comprehension and accuracy of responses, as participants are more likely to understand questions and express their thoughts clearly when communicated in their native language. This can lead to higher response rates and more reliable data. It influences analysis by ensuring that the cultural context is adequately considered, reducing misinterpretations that might arise from language barriers .
