BRIEF HISTORY OF THE COMPANY

INTRODUCTION:

Cement is a key infrastructure industry. It has been decontrolled from price

and distribution on 1st March 1989 and delicensed on 25th July 1991. However, the

performance of the industry and prices of cement are monitored regularly. The

constraints faced by the industry are reviewed in the infrastructure coordination

committee meetings held in the cabinet secretariat under the chairmanship of

secretary (co-ordination). Its performance is also reviewed by the cabinet

committee on infrastructure.

The cement industry comprises of 125 large cement plants with an installed

capacity of 148.28 million tones and more than 300 mini cement plants with an

estimated capacity of 11.10 million tones per annum.

For the development of the cement industry “working group cement

Industry” was constituted by the planning commission for the formulation of

Tenth (X) Five Year Plan.

In order to improve global competitiveness of the Indian cement industry

the department of industrial policy and promotion commissioned a study on the

international repute, viz., KIMG Consulting Private Limited. The report submitted

by the organization has made several recommendations for making the Indian

cement industry more competitive in the international market.

Cement is considered one of the most important building materials around

the most important building materials around the world. It is mainly used for the

production of concrete.

Cement consumption and production is closely related to construction

activity, and therefore to the general economic activity. Cement is one of the most

produced materials around the world. Due to the importance of cement as a

construction material, and the geographic abundance of the main raw materials,

i.e., limestone, cement is produced in virtually all countries.

The widespread production is also due to the relative low price and high

density of cement.

Cement production is a highly energy intensive production process.

Cement to European and Sri Lankan norms
UltraTech's bulk cement terminal in Sri Lanka is located at Colombo. Cement is
received by specially-engineered, self-discharging bulk cement carriers. It is then
discharged at the port in road bowsers which transport cement 10 km from port to the
terminal. Cement is stored in 4 x 7500 T cement concrete silos. A sophisticated bulk
cement terminal.
State-of-the-art technology and innovation are the key factors behind UltraTech
Concrete's success. As a part of its 'value' offering, UltraTech Concrete deploys Expert
Quality Systems for managing the quality of raw materials, efficient raw mix design and
cube test results that help it analyze data statistically.

16. VARIOUS GOVT. NORMS TO BE FULFILLED

BY THE ORGANIZATION

The global scenario continues to be trapped in a low growth trajectory, despite the

steep drop in crude oil and commodity prices. Furthermore, a barrage of monetary

stimulus has driven down interest rates close to zero in many of the advanced economies.

With the monetary stimulus option by and large exhausted, governments are more likely

to turn to fiscal and structural measures to revive growth. The IMF projects global growth

to inch up from 3.1% in 2015 to 3.2% in 2016, and increasing to 3.5% in 2017. Growth in

the advanced economies is projected at 1.9% in 2016, with US growth pegged at 2.4%,

Europe at 1.5% and Japan at 0.5%. Growth in the emerging markets in 2016, overall, is

projected at 4.1%, much of it coming from China, India and the ASEAN region. Growth

in Latin America is expected to be only 0.5%, on account of a 3.8% decline in growth in

Brazil. No sustained upside is seen in oil and commodity prices in 2016. The path ahead

for the global economy remains challenging, with greater uncertainties thrown in.

Concerns persist about the slowdown in China and its ability to shift smoothly from

export-led to domestic-led growth. Fiscal pressures will accentuate in the oil producing

countries, including the rich Middle-East countries. Financial markets remain nervous

and exchange rate volatility has been pronounced. This is reinforced by the impending

reversal of the interest rate cycle in the US.
