1. Arunima blew out the candles on the cake.
2. The dog bit the girl.
3. Peter bought some sweets.
4. The mechanic repaired the washing machine.
The subjects in the above sentence are the ‘doer of the action’.
When the subject of the verb is the doer of an action, the verb is said to be
in the active voice.
Structure of an active voice sentence:
Subject + main verb (as per the tense) + direct object + adjunct
(additional, inessential words/phrases) OR
Doer of the action + action + receiver of the action + rest of the
sentence
1. The cupboard was locked up by my mother.
2. The deer was killed by the hunter.
3. The car is driven by Steve.
4. The assignment is completed by Satish.
Here, the subject is the ‘receiver of the action’.
In the above sentences, the subject does not do anything; it is not active.
Something is done to it, and that is why the verb is called passive. It uses a
helping verb.
Structure of a passive voice sentence:
Object + helping verb (‘be’ verb as per the tense) + V3 (third form of
the main verb i.e. past participle) + by + subject + adjunct
Receiver of the action + action + by + doer of the action + rest of the
sentence
NOTE : The change in the voice from active to passive can be done only for
verbs which are used transitively.
##The object in active voice becomes the subject in the passive voice.i.e.
The subject and the object exchange their positions.
##The Passive Voice always requires the auxillary ‘be’ verb
## In the Passive Voice, we generally use the preposition ‘by’ after the verb
and then mention the doer.
## Subject pronoun in the active voice becomes the object pronoun in the
passive voice. Eg: I write poems. (A) Poems are written by me (P)
##Object pronoun in the active voice becomes the subject pronoun in the
passive voice. Eg: The opponents defeated us. (A) We were defeated by the
opponents. (P)
## The verb agrees with the subject of the sentence.
