CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

1.1 Project Background

Aquariums are a delightful addition to any space, adding a touch of nature's serenity
and a splash of vibrant life. They are a window to a world teeming with a variety of aquatic
species, each with its unique needs and sensitivities. However, maintaining an aquarium is
not a simple task. It requires constant vigilance and a deep understanding of the delicate
balance that sustains aquatic life. The health and survival of the fish and other aquatic
organisms depend heavily on the conditions of (1)their environment, particularly the
temperature and (2)pH level of the water.( OK CHECKED!)
The traditional approach to maintaining an aquarium involves manual monitoring of
these two parameters. This can be a time-consuming and laborious task, requiring the owner
to invest a large amount of time and effort to upkeep the fish and the aquarium. While the
owners may try their best to provide the most stable living environment to their pets, manual
monitoring is inevitably susceptible to human errors like inaccurate readings, thus potentially
risking the lives of the aquarium inhabitants. Currently as observed by the researcher, an
absence of automated and efficient real time monitoring system complicates the task of
upkeeping the aquarium that acts to notify and warns owners of any reading deviations and
abnormalities in terms of water filtration quality, acidity and clarity. So, it is timely for the
researcher to make attempts to offer a convenient option to all aquarium owners to minimize
challenges and risks of aquarium maintenance.

Many aquarium owners are struggling to stick to the routine of maintaining their fish tank in
the most habitable environments such as water filtration quality, acidity and clarity as they
are bound to others daily commitments too. As being generally acknowledged by many
aquarium lovers, the tasks of maintaining the water filtration quality, acidity and clarity are
the most arduous demands for any aquarium owners. This requires the owners to invest their
little time left to spare in these repetitive tasks at least once in 2 weeks. Since the quality of
the water is the most crucial part in rearing ornamental fish, the failure to observe the routines
religiously, can probably results in inhabitable surrounding for the fish to thrive, that can too
lead to the perish of the invested pets. Many aquarium owners give up the hobby after they
find out that keeping an aquarium demands a lot of time to be invested in its maintenance
routine. It is such a loss that many who used to dream to have an aquarium and already
invested a large amount of money simply abandon their dreams when they realize that they
don’t have the dedication to maintain their aquarium in its best. Although there are already a
number of remote monitoring systems sold in the net, the application of the system is not
integrated and nonuser friendly, resulting the prospects to shy away from trying out the
system. So, the introduction of an automated, integrated and no hassles monitoring system in
real time that serves to send out accurate and objective data to owners is definitely a greatly
welcome assistant to all aquarium lovers. It is hoped that the proposed means to maintain the
tank can lift off the burden of all fish and aquarium in keeping the aquarium in its most
habitable environment for all the creatures that lives in it.
1.3 Objectives
1. To design and develop an straightforward but dependable aquarium monitoring
system that can accurately measure temperature and pH levels in real time.
2. To implement a notification system that relay informed alerts to the owner when
these 2 parameters related to water temperature and pH levels are deviated or
compromised from the most sustainable aquarium environment for fish.
3. To provide viable solutions to long dreaded tasks like
I. activating a cooler fan when the tank temperature is heating up,
II. activating a heater when the tank temperature is bottoming down , and
III. pumping?/flushing out hard water from the aquarium and introducing
clean water when the pH level is abnormal? acidic
4. To offer a simple but reliable means to remotely control the refilling of fresh water
at any given time that can be conveniently commanded by the owners without the
fear of any mishaps or incidents.
1.4 Project Scope
The scope of the project is to design and develop a real time domestic aquarium monitoring
system using the ESP32 microcontroller board. The system will incorporate two sensors, a
temperature sensor, and a pH sensor, to accurately measure and monitor the temperature and
pH levels of the aquarium water. First, the ESP32 board will continuously collect data from
the sensors. Second, the collected data will be assessed by the software. Finally, notification
alerts are sent to user's smartphone every time the formulated parameter values are breached.

Furthermore, the monitoring system will be integrated with the Blynk app software, allowing
the users to have access to control the fan, heater, and pump remotely. For example, should
the temperature’s increase exceeds the default range , the users can activate the fan through
the app to bring down the aquarium’s temperature. On the contrary, when the temperature
falls below the programmed range, the users can remotely turn on the heater to regulate the
optimal temperature for all the inhabitants. Last but not least, another feature of the system
that will be greatly appreciated is, an option to conveniently activate a water pump through
this app to effectively flushing out exact litres of acidic water from the aquarium water and
refilling the tank with clean water as commanded by the system effortlessly.

As a matter of precaution , the system will also be equipped with a reliable water level sensor
to prevent any water overflow . The pump will automatically shuts down when the water
level reaches its limit threshold, thus eliminating any mishaps of water overflowing and other
unwanted incidents.
Summary of the Chapter

Common questions
