Combinatorial Probability and Random Variables

This document is a tutorial for the F.Y. B.Tech. Autumn Semester 2024-25 at COEP Technological University, focusing on combinatorial probability, random variables, and probability distributions. It includes a series of problems related to probability concepts, such as events in sample spaces, drawing cards, rolling dice, and using Bayes' rule. Additionally, it covers definitions and differences between discrete and continuous random variables, along with specific probability functions.

(1) Let S be any sample space and A and B are events in S.

If A is a subset of B then prove that P (A) ≤ P (B). Is the
converse true ? Justify.

(2) What is the probability that a leap year selected at random

will contain 53 sundays ?

(3) Find the probability of drawing an ace or a spade or both

from a pack of 52 cards ?

(4) In rolling two fair dice, what is the probability of obtaining a

sum greater than 4 but not exceeding 7 ?

(5) A die is rolled and a coin is tossed, find the probability that
the die shows an odd number and the coin shows a head.

(6) There are three bags : first containing 1 white, 2 red, 3 green
balls; second containing 2 white, 3 red, 1 green balls and third
containing 3 white, 1 red, 2 green balls. Two balls are drawn
from bag chosen at random. These are found to be 1 white
and 1 red. Find the probability that the balls so drawn came
from the second bag. (Hint: Use Baye’s rule)

(7) Define random variable, discrete and continuous random vari-

ables giving two examples of each.
1
(8) Discuss the differences between discrete variables and contin-
uous variables with appropriate examples.

(9) Let X be the number of years before a certain kind of pump

needs replacement. Let X have the probability function
f (x) = kx3, x = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4. Find k.

(10) A box contains 4 right-handed and 6 left-handed screws. Two

screws are drawn at random without replacement. Let X be
the number of left-handed screws drawn. Find the
probabilities P (X = 0), P (X = 1), P (X = 2),
P (1 < X < 2), P (X ≤ 1), P (X ≥ 1), P (X > 1), and
P (0.5 < X < 10).

(11) If X has the probability function f (x) = x (x = 0, 1, 2...),
2
what are k and P (X ≥ 4) ?
