Trapezoidal and Simpson's Rules Tutorial

The document is a tutorial for F.Y. B.Tech. students at COEP Technological University focusing on the Trapezoidal rule and Simpson's rules in mathematics. It includes various problems for approximation of integrals and areas under curves using these numerical methods. The tutorial is coordinated by Dr. Kiran Dalvi and covers multiple examples with specific instructions for calculations.

Tutorial 13
Topic : Trapezoidal rule, Simpson’s rules
Course Co-ordinator : Dr. Kiran Dalvi

(1) Use the Trapezoidal rule with n = 6 to approximate sin2 x dx.

(2) A function f (x) is given by the table of values. Approximate
the area under the curve y = f (x) between x = 0 and x = 8
using the Trapezoidal rule with n = 4 subintervals.
x 0 2 4 6 8
f(x) 3 7 11 9 3
(3) Use the Trapezoidal rule to evaluate the vertical distance
traveled by a rocket by dividing the interval (0, 30) into 10
equal parts
 if the vertical velocity is given by
2
10t − 5t
 if 0 ≤ t ≤ 10
V (t) = 1000 − 5t if 10 ≤ t ≤ 20
45t + 2(t − 20)2 if 20 ≤ t ≤ 30

(4) Approximate the area under the curve y = 2x between

x = −1 and x = 3 using the Trapezoidal rule with n = 4
subintervals.

(5) A function f (x) is given by the table of values. Find the

approximate area under the curve y = f (x) from x = 0 to
x = 4 using Simpson’s 31 rd rule with n = 4.
x 0 1 2 3 4
f(x) 2 7 12 10 5

(6) A solid of revolution is formed by rotating about the x axis
the area between the x axis, the lines x = 0 and x = 1, and
a curve through the points with the following coordinates

x 0 0.25 0.50 0.75 1

y 1 0.9896 0.9589 0.9089 0.8415
Estimate the volume of the solid formed, giving the answer
to three decimal places.

a) Analytically
b) by Trapezoidal rule with n = 2
c) by Simpson’s 31 rd rule with n = 4
d) by Simpson’s 38 th rule with n = 6
e) Compare b), c), d) with a).

(8) Use Simpson’s 13 rd rule with n = 4 to approximate the
