Introduction to Continuum Mechanics

The document is an introduction to Continuum Mechanics by Dr. Saumendra Kumar Bajpai, outlining key concepts such as motion, deformation, kinematics of rigid bodies, and basic definitions related to extension and configuration. It discusses Lagrangian and Eulerian descriptions for continuous media and the principles of translation and rotation for rigid bodies. The document also includes a course category breakdown with required credits for various disciplines.

Basics

New extension
Consider a particle at X initially, moving to x at time t.
xi = xi (XR , t) ⇒ x = x (X , t)

Basic Definitions

Extension
Line segment that connects P and Q, at t = 0
PQ deforms to P ′ Q ′ at time t
Extension ϵ defined as change in length of material line over total
length of material line

If dS is length of PQ before deformation, and ds is the length after

deformation, then:
ds − dS
ϵn = lim
ds→0 dS

Configuration

For Continuous Media

Lagrangian description: Follow a particle
Eulerian description: Follow a position

Configuration

For Continuous Media

Lagrangian description: Follow a particle
Eulerian description: Follow a position

If x denotes the position of a particle at time t, that occupied X at time

t = 0, then we can write either of the two descriptions below:
x̂ = X (X , t), that is Lagrangian or
x̂ = x (x, t), that if Eulerian in nature

Translation and Rotation

For Rigid bodies

Translation: All particles undergo same displacement

xi = Xi + ci (t), or x = X + c(t)
Rotation: For rotation, only angular displacement is the same

x1 = X1 cos α − X2 sin α
x2 = X1 sin α + X2 cos α
