Differentiation Tutorial: Tangents & Chain Rule

This document is a tutorial for MAM1110H focusing on differentiation, including calculating tangent equations, analyzing functions for increasing/decreasing intervals, and applying the chain rule. It provides specific functions to differentiate and requires plotting graphs with intercepts and turning points. The tutorial includes various exercises that involve using product, quotient, and chain rules for differentiation.

MAM1110H - Tutorial 12 - 2024

DIFFERENTIATION: Tangents, Increasing/Decreasing, Chain Rule

Friday 2 August 2024

1. Calculate the equation of the tangent to the graph of f (x) at the point where x = a if

(a) f (x) = x3 + 3x2 − 2 and a = 2

e−x
(b) f (x) = x
and a = −1

2. Given the function f (x) given by

f (x) = x2 − 2x − 8

(a) Plot the function f (x) showing the coordinates of all intercepts with the x and y axes and
the turning point.
(b) Calculate f ′ (x) (the derivative of f (x)) and plot it on a separate set of axes.
(c) For what values of x is f (x) increasing? (write your answer in interval notation)
(d) For what values of x is f (x) decreasing? (write your answer in interval notation)
(e) For what value of x is f (x) not increasing or decreasing?

3. Chain Rule: Differentiate the following functions with respect to x. Do not simplify your answer.

(a) f (x) = (2x3 − 6x + 4)5 (h) f (x) = (1 + ex )20

(b) y = 4x3 + x2 − 3 (i) g(x) = ex
4 +2x3 +3

(c) f (x) = (ln x)2 3 +2

(j) h(x) = ln(ex )
(d) y = log(x3 + 2x + 1)

(e) h(x) = ln( x) (k) y = e−3x

(f) k(x) = ln(1 + π) (l) k(x) = e x

x3 2 −x
(g) y = x (m) y = 2x

4. Differentiate the following with respect to x. You may need to use the product rule, quotient rule,
chain rule or some combination. Do not simplify your answer.

(b) y =
(3 − 2x2 )2 (i) y = xf (x) (f (x) is an unknown function,
