Introduction:
Foundational design studio is one of the subjects in the first year of architecture course. In
this studio we're asked to do several activities which improves our perspective towards
architecture and our way of perceiving things around us. We are also exposed to different
mediums which helps us find our interest.
Collection of junk:
During our site visit to Malaikottai we were given a number of activities to be completed, one
of which was collecting scrap. The instruction was to find any 6 things that fits in our palm
out of which 3 should be manmade and 3 should be natural. All these things placed in a
30×30 box should overflow. We started roaming around the streets searching for scrap.
Initially I was confused about what to collect. I went to different shops asking them to show
the weirdest thing they have, I couldn't find one different object. After some time I collected 3
objects which was all manmade. They fit in the palm but were too small to fill a 30×30 box.
So the next class we roamed around our campus and surprisingly we found multiple weird
objects. I randomly collected few junk and completed the activity.
Collage:
Pablo Picasso's 'Three Musicians' was given as a reference. The exercise was to recreate
the painting using the junk that we collected. It was really confusing in the beginning, I tried
to figure out how I should place the objects, asked for few tips from our seniors and then
arrived at an idea. I thought of recreating the painting in terms of the colours used in it. Since
my theme was based in the colours, I wanted to collect more junk which was close to the
colour in the painting. The recreation part was the most satisfying part as I got to notice the
similarities in colours between the collage and the painting.
Painting of collage using different mediums:
Medium 1- crayons
We were asked to recreate the collage using any 3 primary colours. I tried to capture the
shaped and proportions right in the time limit that we had and I was satisfied with the
outcome.
Medium 2- ink and brush
This exercise mainly revolves around capturing the shadows. We switched off all the lights,
helped eachother in holding the torch, and captured the shadow that fell within the model. It
turned out completely weird and different from the collage according to me.
Medium 3- colour pencils
Capturing the details given the time restriction was difficult to me. I tried getting the shapes
right. Since all of our work was lacking details, we were asked to do the same exercise again
without any time restriction. This time I captured both shape and details.
Clay model:
This was the most interesting exercise of all. We had so much fun recreating the collage
using clay. Our seniors gave us a brief demo on how to get the proportions and texture right.
Once completed, arranging the pieces on the base was very rewarding. Comparing the
model with the collage made me appreciate how similar they looked.
Blurring:
This exercise was a bit heartbreaking since the proportion, texture and shape that I worked
so hard on wouldn't be seen again. As I was absent on the day of this activity, got the
instructions from my friends. I did the whole activity at home without seeing anybody's work
which was a bit challenging.
Fine pen art of junk collage:
Using fine pen to imitate the collage was highly relaxing and therapeutic in a way. We
worked on a larger sheet which was double the size of the collage model. We had to look
into minute details and capture it without lifting the pen. I spent almost four to five hours
sketching the details, saw my pen run out of ink, but the final output was all worth it.
Pathway, Humans, and Pavilion:
For the first time, I saw my model from a completely different perspective. By imagining the
model scaled down by a factor of one hundred, we were instructed to design the pavilion,
humans, and pathways accordingly. Viewing the model from all four sides and placing
ourselves within it taught me how a single object can be perceived in many different ways.
Pixel paint:
In this exercise we were instructed to make exact replication of our collage in pixels. This
exercise mainly revolves around colour theory. The fact that we had to fill 900 boxes was
itself tiring even before I started. But as I moved on, it started to get intresting. And again,
comparing the pixel with the original model was the satisfying part here too.
Conclusion:
The foundational design studio has significantly transformed the way I perceive the world
around me. It encouraged me to use my imagination and exposed me to various mediums,
broadening my creativity .Through these exercises, I’ve not only gained valuable skills but
also had fun exploring new ideas and techniques. Overall, this experience has deepened my
understanding of design and sparked a passion for creativity that I will continue to develop
going forward.
