Basic Electrical Engineering - Brief
Notes
1. Basic Concepts
Voltage (V): Electric potential difference between two points (unit: volts).
Current (I): Flow of electric charge (unit: amperes).
Resistance (R): Opposition to current flow (unit: ohms, Ω).
Power (P): Rate of electrical energy consumption (unit: watts).
Formula: P = V × I
2. Ohm’s Law
Formula: V = I × R
Relates voltage, current, and resistance.
3. Types of Current
DC (Direct Current): Constant current in one direction (e.g., battery).
AC (Alternating Current): Current changes direction periodically (e.g., mains supply).
4. Electrical Components
Resistor: Limits current.
Capacitor: Stores electrical energy.
Inductor: Stores energy in magnetic field.
Diode: Allows current in one direction only.
Transformer: Changes voltage levels in AC circuits.
5. Series & Parallel Circuits
Series:
- Same current through all elements.
- Total resistance: R_total = R1 + R2 + ...
Parallel:
- Same voltage across each element.
- Total resistance: 1/R_total = 1/R1 + 1/R2 + ...
6. Kirchhoff’s Laws
KCL (Current Law): Sum of currents at a node = 0.
KVL (Voltage Law): Sum of voltages in a loop = 0.
7. AC Fundamentals
Frequency (f): Number of cycles per second (unit: Hz).
Impedance (Z): Total opposition in AC circuit (includes resistance + reactance).
8. Measuring Instruments
Voltmeter: Measures voltage.
Ammeter: Measures current.
Multimeter: Measures voltage, current, resistance, etc.
9. Power Systems
Generation: Power is generated in power plants.
Transmission: High-voltage power is transmitted over long distances.
Distribution: Power is stepped down and delivered to homes/industries.
