Definition of a Computer
An electronic device that manipulates data according to instructions.
It can store, retrieve, and process data.
Performs four basic operations: Input, Process, Output, Storage.
Input Devices
Devices used to enter data into a computer.
Examples:
- Keyboard
- Mouse
- Scanner
- Microphone
- Webcam
Output Devices
Devices that convey information from a computer to the user.
Examples:
- Monitor
- Printer
- Speakers
- Projector
Memory: Primary and Secondary
Primary Memory (Main Memory):
- RAM (Volatile, temporary)
- ROM (Non-volatile, permanent)
Secondary Memory:
- HDD, SSD, CDs, USB drives
Data Files
Organized collection of related data stored electronically.
Types:
- Text Files
- Binary Files
- Program Files
- Multimedia Files
Hardware Components
Physical components of a computer.
Examples:
- CPU
- Motherboard
- RAM/ROM
- Power Supply Unit
Computer Peripherals
External devices attached to a computer.
Categories:
- Input: Keyboard, Mouse
- Output: Printer, Monitor
- Storage: External HDD, Flash drives
Software and Its Types
Software: Set of instructions to operate hardware.
Types:
- System Software: OS, Utilities
- Application Software: MS Word, Browsers
- Programming Software: Compilers, Editors
Operating Systems
Software that manages hardware and software resources.
Functions:
- Process Management
- File Management
- Device Management
- User Interface
Examples: Windows, Linux, macOS
Secondary Storage Devices
Used for storing data permanently.
Types:
- Magnetic: HDD, Tape Drives
- Optical: CD/DVD
- Solid-State: SSDs, Flash Drives
- Cloud Storage
Types of Computers
Classified based on size and power:
- Supercomputer: High-performance tasks
- Mainframe: Large-scale business use
- Minicomputer: Mid-size organizations
- Microcomputer (PC): Personal Use
- Embedded Computer: Inside devices (e.g., washing machine)
