[Link] Treatment Plant (Membrane Bioreactor MBR):
Here in MCF, they collect all the used water and
send it to the sewage treatment plant which is now using
the method of Membrane Bioreactor. I have a inserted a
flow chart how the process takes place.
This sewage treatment plant has a capacity of
[Link]. and the age of membrane is 5years
and the cost of maintenance is around 5lakhs
per year per plant. After the purification of the
water here the water goes to RO plant. In the
RO plant the water collected from the sewage
plant is treated and the water is directly
supplied to the quarters and for industrial
purposes.
By this we can conclude that in NITK where 50% of water going to waste. We can use this type of
sewage plants in the college to purify the water which can be collected. By the water which is purified
can be used for gardening and used for daily usage purposes other than drinking.
This is the sample of water after purification and we can see the
cleanliness of the water which passed through a filter of 0.1 micron at
the end of the process.

1. 1.2 MLD SBR TECHNOLOGY SEWAGE TREATMENT PLANT
(Sequencing batch reactor - Wikipedia).
Here in NMPA all the sewage water gets collected through gravity pull
into the collection tank over here in one place. Here in this place the
filtration of sewage water takes place which can be used for gardening and
for the port activities.
Here the operational cost is around 20-30 lakhs/annum, breakdown cost
around 5-7 lakhs and man power required is of 6people as 3 skilled and 3
unskilled.
Here is a flowchart of the process how the filtration is taken place.

YENEPOYA (DEEMED TO BE UNIVERSITY)
1. Freshwater Pond:
Here in Yenepoya, they have constructed a
artificial pond from the down stream water by
constructing a road to a certain height of 45feet. The
water which go on the downstream accumulate here.
Due to the pond the groundwater level increases, there
is a naturally formed well over there and they collect
the water through that well for all purposes. Which is
supplied to nearly 16000-17000 students who reside
in the hostels there.
2. Sewage Treatment Plant:
Here there are 4 Sewage Treatment Plants which purify the water around 4 different locations and
they are of capacities 900kl,300kl,500kl and 300kl. This recycled water is used around the college for
various purposes as of gardening, daily utilities, etc.,
3. Solid Waste Management Plant (Vermi Compost)
Here they mentioned that they have a food wastage of around 650kg per day. From that food
waste they are preparing Vermi compost which takes around 45-50 days to decompose as
Primary Decomposition – 25days
Secondary Decomposition – 20-25days
The food wastage which is not used for Vermi compost is taken to their food management dept.
where the remaining is decomposed using a other process.
ST ALOYSIUS UNIVERSITY
1. Percolation Pit:
Percolation pits are like wells which helps in recharge of groundwater levels by collecting the
water like rainwater from all over the place and dumping into this pit where the ground absorbs it
slowly other than draining the water.
Here in this University, which is situated in a area of 30acres and which resides a student strength
of 16000, there are many borewells located all over the place. They mentioned there are around 4
percolation pits around the university. The rainwater around the university collects into these
percolation pits. After the establishment of these pits, they mentioned the ground water level is also
increased, as they mentioned.
